Handling: I småstaden Smith's Hollow på 1980-talet bor 15-åriga Lauren med sin mamma och lillebror. Hon älskar att umgås med sin bästis Miranda ute i skogen men Miranda har förändrats. Istället för att springa i skogen, klättra i träd och bygga kojor vill Miranda hellre hänga i spelarkaden med killar och det är det enda hon pratar om, killar. Lauren är inte alls intresserad av det.

Ända sedan Lauren förlorade sin pappa på ett mystiskt sätt för 1 år sen har livet blivit jobbigt. Hon kommer inte riktigt överens med sin mamma Karen och nu när Miranda har börjat glida ifrån Lauren känns allt ännu värre. En dag hittas två sönderstrimlade kroppar i en trädgård och livet blir aldrig detsamma i den sömniga småstaden. Sakta men säkert avslöjas det att ett monster härjar i skogen och att ingen går säker längre. På nått sätt verkar Lauren stå mitt i centrum för allt det mystiska som händer men hur och varför är det kopplat till henne?

Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en sorts hyllning till 80-talet och dess skräckfilmer, vilket sällan är fel! Christina Henry har skrivit många bra böcker (serien om Alice i Underlandet, The Lost Boys, The Mermaid m.fl.) som alla har varit relativt råa och brutala, speciellt böckerna om Alice, så jag förväntade mig en hel del våld och/eller blod. Men jag tyckte ändå att den här boken var relativt lättsmält. Jag vet inte heller om jag skulle säga att den passar in i skräckgenren, snarare mer åt rysarhållet. Boken är dock väldigt bra. De första sidorna var lite sega, jag fick inte riktigt nåt grepp om varken Lauren eller Smith's Hollow men efter bara några kapitel var jag rätt fast.
Handlingen berättas via flera karaktärers perspektiv och tar upp olika typer av problem, bland annat rasism, sorg, alkoholism, könsroller m.m. men på ett väldigt smart sätt. Man tänker knappt på det samtidigt som man ändå blir väldigt engagerad och mer förstående för vissa karaktärers beteende (dock inte mrs Schneider, tantskrället).

Berättelsen i sig handlar egentligen om ett läskigt träd mitt ute i skogen som alla förutom Lauren ogillar. Av någon anledning känner hon sig dragen till och trygg vid trädet. Det är där hon hör hemma. Allt förändras dock när sönderslitna kroppar dyker upp. Det finns en legend i staden som alla har glömt av men som påverkar dem varenda dag. Det är själva ramen i berättelsen och man får hela tiden små bitar av pusslet, vilket så klart bara ökar ens intresse och engagemang. Jag tyckte boken var bra men slutet kändes lite... drygt. Den sista meningen var verkligen inte min grej (man förstår varför om man läser boken!) men jag tänker inte förklara närmare för då riskerar jag att avslöja nåt. En lagom ryslig bok som passar för årstiden!

Story: In the small town of Smith's Hollow during the 1980's lives 15 year old Lauren with her mother and little brother. She loves to hang out with her bestie Miranda in the woods but Miranda has changed. Instead of running around in the woods, climbing trees and building forts Miranda wants to hang out with boys and that's the only thing she talks about, boys. Lauren is no interested in that at all.

Ever since Lauren lost her father in a mysterious way 1 year ago life has been difficult. She doesn't get along with her mother Karen and now when Miranda has drifted away from Lauren everything is even worse.
One day two shredded bodies are found in a backyard and life changes forever for everyone in the sleepy small town. Slowly but surely it is discovered that a monster lurks in the woods and that no one is safe any more. Somehow it's seems like Lauren is in the centre of all the mysterious happenings but how and why is it connected to her?

My opinion about the book: This is sort of a tribute to the 80's and its horror movies, which is rarely wrong! Christina Henry has written many great books (the series about Alice in Wonderland, The Lost Boys, The Mermaid and so on) that were relatively raw and brutal, especially the books about Alice so I was expecting a fair amount of violence and/or blood. But I still thought that the book was pretty light regarding that. I don't know if I would label it as horror either, it's more like a thriller. The book is still great though. The first pages were a bit slow, I didn't really get a grip on Lauren or Smith's Hollow but after just a few chapters I was sucked right in. 

The plot is told through several characters' perspective and deals with all kinds of problems, like racism, grief, alcoholism, gender rolls and so on in a very clever way. You hardly even notice it but at the same time it engages you and makes you more understanding towards some characters behavior (except for mrs Schneider, that crone). The plot itself is really about a creepy tree in the middle of the woods that everyone except Lauren dislike. For some reason she feels drawn to it and feels safe around it. That's where she belongs. Everything changes though when shredded bodies show up. There's a legend in town that everyone has forgotten but that affect them each day. That's the framework of the story and you get small pieces of the puzzle all the time, which of course just enhances your interest and engagement. I did like the book but the end was not my cup of tea. The last sentence was just not okey (you get it if you read the book!) but I will not say why because then I might reveal something. A moderate thriller that fits the season!

Jag började delta i Omnibles utlottningar och vann en bok efter bara någon vecka, men så klart var det ju en bok jag redan hade... Vad annars? Haha. Sen kan man ju fråga sig varför jag visade intresse för en bok jag redan äger och har läst. Men... fråga inte, haha. 🙈

Handling: Var kommer ordet "kättare" ifrån och vad betydde det ifrån början? Kunde vem som helst bli kallad för det eller krävdes det något speciellt? Vad hände med de som ansågs vara kättare och vad var straffen för kätteri? Det och mycket mer får man veta i den här boken!

Min åsikt om boken: Jag ska försöka hålla mig kort här, för när det gäller det här ämnet kan jag sväva iväg ordentligt. Dick Harrison är som bekant en favorit hos mig, för som vanligt är den här boken lättläst, spännande och lättförståelig, något som verkligen utmärker Harrison. Han gör historia levande och underhållande, till skillnad från vissa andra historiker som mest bara rabblar fakta upp och ner, vilket inte alltid är så kul. Harrison har en speciell berättarteknik som fångar och behåller ens intresse från början till slut.

Vad gäller ämnet i sig handlar det så klart mycket om kyrkan, då det ligger oss närmast här i Europa men kättare har funnits längre än kristendomen men få har väl haft ett sånt järngrepp om världen som kristendomen under så lång tid, så det är inte konstigt att mycket fokus hamnar där. Jag är ju anti organiserad religion och en bok som denna gör en inte direkt mer vänligt inställd till det, om vi säger så. Allt handlar om makt, status och pengar. Som vanligt. Men det är fortfarande intressant att läsa om hur mycket man käbblade och kände sig hotade för minst lilla.
Det jag tyckte var mest intressant var hur många "sekter"/kättare som var emot den organiserade kyrkan på grund av korruption och makt. Många tyckte redan för flera hundra år sen, om inte mer, att kyrkan hade irrat bort sig från Jesus ursprungliga budskap och förvrängt hans eftermäle. Det var förvånansvärt många som tyckte det under olika århundraden och det var ju inte särskilt populärt. Det slutade inte bra för dem personerna men jag håller verkligen med dem. Hur som, boken är jättebra och spännande. Är man historieälskare måste man läsa Dick Harrisons böcker, för han är så bra!

Title: This books doesn't have an english title so I just translated it from swedish to english.

Story: Where does the word "heretic" come from and what did it mean from the beginning? Could anyone be called that or did it take something special? What happened to those who were seen as heretics and what were the punishment for heresy? That and so much more is revealed in this book!

My opinion of the book: I will try to make this short, because when it comes to this subject I can really get carried away. Dick Harrison is, as you well know, a favorite of mine. This book is as usual easy to read, suspensful and easy to understand, which is a long standing feature of this author. He makes history come to life and makes it entertaining, unlike some historians that just recite facts up and down, which is not always fun. Harrison has a special skill of storytelling that captures and retain the reader's interest from the beginning to the end.

When it comes to the subject itself it's of course a lot about the church, since it's close to us here in Europe, but heretics had been around far longer than christianity, but few have had such a grip on the world as christianity for so long, so it's not surprising that a lot of focus is on that. I am anti organized religion and a book like this one doesn't really make you more positive towards it, to say the least. Everything is about power, status and money. As usual. But it's still interesting to read about all the squabble and feeling threaten by everything.

What I found most intriguing was that many "sects"/heretics were against the organized church because of corruption and power. Many thought, many hundred years ago, if not more, that the church had strayed away from the original message of Jesus and corrupted his legacy. It was surprising that so many thought that during different centuries and it wasn't popular with the church. It didn't end well for those people but I really do agree with them. Anywho, the book is great and so exciting. If you're a history lover then you must read Dick Harrisons' book because he's so good!

Handling: Gretel Mudd är i Darkwoodskogen tillsammans med prinsessan Snow och hennes dvärgar, bakelsehäxan Buttercup, växthäxan Jack, spöket Patience och den talande spindeln Trevor. Efter att ha försvarat Gretels hemby Nearby mot "the huntsmen" vill gänget nu värva så många allierade de bara kan i Darkwoodskogen och beger sig därför till Bear Mountain, där det sägs bo en otäck björnhäxa. Men "the huntsmen" är ett ännu större hot och de vill för en gång skull göra slut på det religiösa samfundet som vill utrota alla magiska varelser i Darkwood.

Min åsikt om boken: Första boken ("Darkwood") var väldigt underhållande att läsa, för den var knasig med klockrena citat och knäppa karaktärer. Det dyker upp även i den här boken, men på nåt sätt känns handlingen lite mer seriös nu. Saker och ting var inte riktigt lika knasiga den här gången. Boken är fortfarande bra och jag gillar att detta är en sorts mix av olika sagokaraktärer i realistiska situationer, trots att det finns talande djur, bakelsehus och spöken. Att leva i en diktatur är ju inte ovanligt och att tvingas kämpa för att få existera är inte heller overkligt. Men författaren lyckas göra ett relativt tungt ämne till något mer lättsamt med en hint av allvar. Jag gillar också de starka kvinnliga karaktärerna och att de manliga karaktärerna är mer neutrala. De är varken starka eller klena. De har inte en hjälteroll men de behöver inte hela tiden daddas med heller. De tar varken mer eller mindre plats än de kvinnliga karaktärerna. En jättemysig och härlig serie som jag verkligen kan rekommendera!

Story: Gretel Mudd is in Darkwood together with the princess Snow and her dwarves, the pastry witch Buttercup, the plant witch Jack, the ghost Patience and the talking spider Trevor. After defending Gretel's home town Nearby against the huntsmen the gang now wants to recruit as many allies as the can in Darkwood and therefor travels to Beat Mountain, where a nasty bear with is said to live. But the huntsmen are an even bigger threat and they want to end the religious society that wants to eradicate all the magical creatures in Darkwood.

My opinion of the book: The first book ("Darkwood") was very entertaining to read because it was wacky with spot on quotes and funny characters. It's in this book too, but the story felt a bit more serious now. Things weren't as wacky this time. The book is still good and I like the mix of different fairytale characters in realistic situations, despite the talking animals, cake houses and ghosts. To live under a dictatorship is not unusual and to have to fight for the right to exist is not unrealistic either. But the author manages to make a heavy subject very easygoing with just a pinch of seriousness. I also like the strong female characters and that the male characters are more neutral. They are neither strong or weak. They aren't heros but not big babies either that need to be taken care off all the time. They don't take up more or less space than the female characters. A very cosy and lovely series that I really recommend!

I got a request about a review copy and I rarely say no, unless it's something that I really dislike (like Crime). It's soon Halloween so a bit horror or mystery is really fitting to read right not. I hope it will be suspenseful to read!

Yasuke - the True Story of the Legendary African Samuari

Handling: Hur kom det sig att en afrikansk man hamnade i Japan i slutet av 1500-talet och blev en samurai hos en av de mäktigaste herrarna i landet? Hur såg hans liv ut och hur slutade det? Detta är en bok om en väldigt speciell människas livshistoria.

Min åsikt om boken: Jag läser en hel del historiska faktaböcker och ibland även biografier, såg jag såg fram emot att läsa om Yasukes liv, för hans historia är väldigt spännande men den här boken är så fel, av flera orsaker. För det första handlar boken kanske till 40% om Yasuke och av de 40% är ungefär 10% baserat på ren fakta, resten är hittepå eller spekulationer som inte ens framgår i handlingen, utan det får man själv hålla koll på i noteringarna i slutet av boken. De övriga 60% av handlingen är om Japan under denna tid, vilket är intressant men borde inte vara huvudfokuset i en biografi om en afrikansk samurai!

Boken är en enda röra. Man vet inte var Yasuke kom ifrån, annat än från afrika, man vet inte vad han tyckte eller tänkte om något, eftersom han inte har lämnat något efter sig och ingen brydde sig om att fråga honom och bevara till eftervärlden, men ändå kan författarna veta precis hur han kände i en viss situation eller vad han tyckte om att göra. Det är så fel. Det är INTE fakta och absolut inte hur man skriver en biografi! Det är rena dödssynden enligt mig att hitta på nåt i en faktabok/biografi. Och sen marknadsföra boken som "den sanna historien" när den knappt baseras på fakta. Det är inte ok!

Hade boken handlat om Japan på 1500-talet och sen haft ett kort kapitel om Yasuke, helt baserat på de faktiska källor som finns, hade boken varit hur bra som helst. Den hade fått 5 av 5 i betyg (om jag hade haft ett betygsystem), för det märks att delarna om Japan under den här tiden är baserat på fakta till skillnad mot bitarna om Yasuke, som inte är annat än spekulationer eller önskedrömmar. Nu skulle inte boken få mer än 2 av 5 i betyg på grund av det. Jag tycker det är respektlöst att skriva en bok en otroligt spännande människas liv och inte basera det på faktiska källor, utan hitta på saker och sen tjäna pengar på det. Det är så fel! Jag tycker definitivt att man ska läsa mer om Yasuke, för hans liv (det man vet) är väldigt spännande men inte via den här boken. Snacka om en besvikelse.

Story: How come an african ended up in Japan durin the end of the 1500's and became a samurai of one of the most powerful man in the country? What did his life look like and how did it end? This is a book about one very special person's life story.

My opinion about the book: I read historical non fiction and biographies now and then, so I really looked forward to read about Yasuke's life, because his story is very interesting, but this book is so wrong for a lot of reasons. First of all, maybe 40% of the book is about Yasuke and maybe 10% of those 40% is based on facts, the rest is just make believe or speculations, which is not clear in the book (that it's speculation) if you don't pay close attention to the notes in the back of the books. The other 60% is about Japan during this time, which is very interesting, but should not be the main focus in a book about an african samurai!

The book is a mess. No one knows where Yasuke came from, other than africa, no one knows what he thought or felt about anything, since he didn't leave anything in writing and no one cared to ask him and save it for the future, yet the authors' know exactly what he felt in a certain situation or what he liked doing. It's so wrong. That is NOT facts and absolutely not how to write a biography! It's a cardinal sin, according to me, to make stuff up in a non fiction book/biography. And then go out and marketing it as "the true story" when it's hardly based on facts. Not ok!

Had the book been about Japan during the 1500's and had a short chapter about Yasuke, solely based on the actual sources that exist, the book would have been great. I would have given it a 5 out of 5 (if I had a grading system), because you can tell that the parts about Japan during this time is based on facts unlike the parts about Yasuke, which is only speculation and wishful thinking. I wouldn't give this book more than 2 out of 5 because of that. I think it's disrespectful to write a book about a very interesting person's life and not base it on facts, make stuff up and then make money off of it. It's wrong! I highly recommend reading more about Yasuke, because his life (that is known) is very intriguing, but not by this book. Such a disappointment.

Jag fick hem tre nya böcker häromdagen och jag ser verkligen fram emot att läsa dem, speciellt boken om kvinnliga faraoner. Kleopatra och Nefertiti känner ju de flesta igen, men t.ex. Hatshepsut är lite mer okänd. Få vet också att Kleopatra (som fick en son med Julius Caesar) är den 7:e med det namnet. Så jag blir alltid lite "Men vilken av dem menar du?" när folk pratar om "Kleopatra" och menar just den 7:e, haha. Det är väl för att jag är lite nördig och petig med detaljer. Finns för övrigt en jättebra biografi om henne som är värd att läsa om man tycker om historia och kvinnliga härskare: "Kleopatra - Egyptens sista drottning" av Joyce Tyldesley.
Höstglöd och When women ruled the world köpte jag på Adlibris och Kimya är en gåva från författare som tack för att jag deltog i en cover reveal. Hur som, härligt med nya böcker att läsa så här när höstmörkret och kylan trycker på.

Vad tycker ni om historiska biografier?

I just received three new books the other day and I really look forward to read them, especially the book about female faroes. Cleopatra and Nefertiti are pretty well known, but Hatshepsut for example is a bit of an unknown figure. Also, few people know that Cleopatra (who had a son with Julius Caesar) is the 7th with that name. So I always get a little "Which one are you talking about?" when people speak about "Cleopatra" and mean the 7th, haha. I guess it's because I'm a bit nerdy and picky about details. There's a wonderfil biography about her that's really worth reading if you like history and female rulers: "Cleopatra - Last queen of Egypt" by Joyce Tyldesley.
I bought Höstglöd (means like autumn embers) and When women ruled the world on Adlibris and Kimya is a gift from the author as a thank you for participating in a cover reveal. Anyway,  always nice with new books to read now when the autumn dark and cold is upon us.

Handling: 12-åriga Julia har fått en ny klasskamrat i skolan, en flyktingpojke vid namn Kasir. Det är nånting som är konstigt med Kasir, i alla fall enligt Julia, men hon kan inte riktigt sätta fingret på vad det är. Han är bra på att rita men går hela tiden runt med en pensel på sig, något som får Julia att misstänka att han försöker vara speciell. Prata svenska kan han knappt heller, så det går inte att kommunicera med honom ordentligt. Till Julias förtret verkar det ha blivit hennes uppgift att ta hand om Kasir i skolan.

En dag händer något väldigt konstigt, vilket tvingar Julia att fly från sitt hus tillsammans med sin lillebror Edvin och Kasir. En konstig filur som kallas för Trubaduren tar med sig barnen till Kasirs hemland, en oerhört vacker men ovanlig värld som tyvärr hotas av precis samma sak som det Julia och hennes bror fick fly ifrån. Men där upptäcker också syskonen något om sin egen bakgrund och att de kan ha förmågan att stoppa det onda som hotar både deras och Kasirs värld.

Min åsikt om boken: Detta är ett recensionexemplar från författaren, vilket jag tackar så mycket för! 🙏
Jag har läst författarens tidigare böcker om Markus av Trolyrien som jag gillade väldigt mycket. Den här boken är väldigt annorlunda jämfört med de om Markus, men så himla bra! Jag tycker faktiskt att Dunkelstjärnan är den bästa författaren skrivit hittills. Den är oerhört spännande, originell och fartfylld. Karaktärerna är väldigt levande och trovärdiga. Jag tycker speciellt om delarna med Kasir och hans svårigheter med språket, för det omvända händer med Julia när hon kommer till Kasirs värld. Helt plötsligt är det hon som inte kan göra sig förstådd och det är då man verkligen förstå att det inte är så enkelt att komma till ett nytt land med en helt ny kultur och nytt språk. Det är inte så lätt att bara lära sig att tala ett språk helt flytande på en gång. Det var ett smart sätt att tydliggöra den biten, för jag tror många har tänkt så: "Varför kan de inte bara lära sig svenska?". Hur lång tid skulle det inte ta mig att lära mig t.ex. arabiska eller mandarin flytande? Skulle jag kunna tala det utan en brytning? Troligen inte.
Likt författarens tidigare böcker ställs det goda mot det onda, men i den här boken känns det som att de religiösa inslagen är mycket färre. Det är (än så länge i alla fall) ingen frälsare som är i fokus, även om det pratas lite om olika "skapare" osv. Men det gjorde att handlingen kändes mer trovärdig, att det här mycket väl skulle kunna hända i verkliga livet. Jag får inte heller glömma att nämna de otroligt fina illustrationerna! De förgyller och förhöjer verkligen läsupplevelsen något enormt.En jättebra och underhållande bok som jag verkligen vill läsa uppföljaren till!

Title: This book doesn't have an english title so I just translated it from swedish to english.

Story: 12 year old Julia has a new class mate in school, a refugee boy by the name of Kasir. There's something weird with Kasir, atleast according to Julia, but she can't really put her finger on what it is. He's really good at drawing but is always walking around with a paintbrush on him, something that makes Julia suspect that he's trying to seem special. He can't speak swedish either, so she can't communicate with him properly. To Julia's annoyance it seems to be her task to take care of Kasir in school.

One day something really strange happens, which forces Julia to flee from her house together with her little brother Edvin and Kasir. A strange figure by the name of The Troubadour takes the kids with him to Kasir's homeland, a beautiful but unusual world that is unfortunately threaten by the same thing that Julia and her brother had to escape from. But in this world the siblings discovers something about their own background and that they might have the power to stop the evil that is threatening both their and Kasir's world.

My opinion of the book: This is a review copy from the author, which I'm very thankful for. 🙏
I've read the author's earlier books about Markus av Trolyrien which I liked a lot. This book is very different compared to those about Markus, but really good! I actually think that Dunkelstjärnan is the best book the author has written so far. It's very suspenseful, original and fast-paced. The characters felt vivid and credible. I especially like the parts with Kasir and his difficulties with the language, because the opposite happens to Julia when she comes to Kasir's world. All of the sudden it's she who can't make herself understood and that's when you really understand that it's not so easy to speak another language fluently right away. It was a clever way of clarifying that part, because I think a lot of people have thought "Why cant they just learn swedish/english". How long wouldn't it take me to learn arabic or mandarin fluently for example? Would I be able to speak it without an accent? Probably not.
Like the author's previous books good is set against evil, but in this book it felt like the religious elements were fewer. There's not a saviour in focus (yet at least), even if there's some talk about different "creators" and so on. But it made the plot more believable, that this could really happen in real life. Oh, I must not forget to mention the beautiful illustrations! They really enhance the reading experience. A very good and entertaining book that I really want to read the sequel to!

Handling: Willow Moss möts av något väldigt underligt en vacker dag, ett träd levererar ett brev till henne från hennes vän Nolin Sometimes. Det konstiga var inte brevet i sig, utan att trädet både kunde röra sig och prata! I brevet står det att Nolin snart kommer att bli kidnappad och att han ber Willow om hjälp att hitta honom. Om det är nåt Willow alltid gör så är det att ställa upp för sina vänner, synd bara att ingen i hennes familj tror på det hon säger. De minns inte att hon räddade dagen som försvann tillsammans med den kändaste häxan i Starfell och nu när hennes magiska kraft har blivit lite bonkers, tror hennes familj att hon är väldigt sjuk. Willow har inte tid att tjafsa, så hon rymmer helt enkelt. Tillsammans med sitt monster Oswin i en hårig resväska beger hon sig ut på en resa i hopp om att hitta sin vän, vilket leder henne till många fantastiska, men också väldigt läskiga ställen.

Min åsikt om boken: Jag ÄLSKAR böckerna om Willow Moss! Böckerna i sig är både mysiga, knasiga och roliga men tillsammans med de gulliga illustrationerna blir allt mycket bättre. Oswin är så klart min favorit, ett sorts kattmonster som kan ändra färg och när han blir arg kommer det rök ur öronen på honom. Han vet direkt när de närmar sig ond magi, för då börjar han "förbanna" sin aunt Osbertrude, haha. Bok nr 2 om Willow var inte sämre än den första, snarare till och med bättre faktiskt. Man får lära känna både Willow och Starfell mer, vilket var spännande då landet är rätt intressant. Till skillnad från första boken är inte bröderna Wol med så mycket men de spelar ändå en mindre roll i berättelsen, men huvudspåret är ändå att hitta Nolin Sometimes. En mycket bra och spännande bok som är så kul att läsa. Man blir glad och sprallig av den! Helt klart enormt läsvärd!

Story: One day Willow Moss is met by some very unusual, a tree is delivering a letter to her from her friend Nolin Sometimes. The unusual is not the letter itself, but that the tree could both move and talk! In the letter Nolin writes that he'll soon be kidnapped and he asks Willow to help find him. If there's something Willow always does it's being there for her friends, it's just unlucky that no one in her family believes what she's telling them. They don't remember Willow saving the missing day together with the most famous witch in Starfell and now when her magical power has gone bonkers, her family thinks she's very sick. Willow doesn't have the time to fuss around so she just simply runs away. Together with her monster Oswin in a hairy carpet bag she journeys out in the world in the hopes of finding her friend, which leads her to many amazing, but also scary places.

My opinion of the book: I LOVE the books about Willow Moss! The books in themselves are both cosy and fun but together with the cute illustrations just makes it all so much better. Oswin is of course my favorite, a sorts of cat monster that can change color and when he gets mad there's smoke coming out of his ears. He knows immediately when they are getting close to bad magic, because that's when he starts to curse his aunt Osbertrude, haha. Book no 2 about Willow is not worse than the first one, rather even better. You get to know Willow and Starfell more, which is exciting since the country is so interesting. Unlike the first book the Brothers of Wol is not present as much but they still play a minor roll in the story, but the main theme is still to find Nolin. A very good and suspenseful book that's fun to read. It makes you feel happy and effervescent! Really worth a read!

Nytt i hyllan/ New on the shelf

Häromdagen köpte jag en bokbox från Seraf förlag, för det är nåt jag saknar; att kunna köpa bokboxar, t.ex. som Owlcrate. Hade gärna prenumererat på det, men frakten och tullen hade blivit svindyr, så det har man ju knappast råd med. Varför har inte Sverige fixat fram nåt liknande? Det var därför jag blev så glad när Seraf började med sina boxar, även om jag missade de första (med boken "Höstglöd").
Just den här boxen innehöll Caroline Hurtigs nya bok "Den röda falken" samt lite smått och gott på samma tema, bland annat specialgjort te, ett doftljus, ett bokmärke, en illustration (på karaktärerna i boken) och en doftpåse med lavendel. Jag älskar lavendel så det passade ju bra, haha. Doftljus älskar jag också men vet inte om jag vågar tända ett med tanke på att Tanten (ena katten) har doftutlöst astma. Dock brukar det vara rökelser som framkallar det, så får se om jag vågar tända ljuset eller inte.
Hur som, en rolig upplevelse att få hem en bokbox med både en ny bok och en massa saker med samma tema.

The other day I bought a book box from Seraf förlag, because that something I miss; to be able to buy book boxes, like Owlcrate for example. I'd love to subscribe to it, but the shipping and the customs fee is really expensive, so I could never afford it. Why doesn't Sweden has something like that? That's why I was so happy when I saw that Seraf offered book boxes, even though I missed the first ones (with the book "Höstglöd").
This box in particular contained Caroline Hurtigs new book "Den röda falken" and then some smaller things within the theme, like a special edition tea, a scented candle, a book mark, an illustration (of the characters in the book) and a fragrance bag of lavender. I love lavender, so it was very fitting, haha. I also love scented candles but I don't know if I dare to light it considering Tanten (one of our cats) has odor-triggered asthma. It's usually incense that triggers it, so I might dare to light it later on.
Anyhow, a fun experience to get my hands on a book box with both a new book and some other things in the same theme!

Handling: Elendhaven är en dyster liten stad vid havet. Industrierna har övergivits, havet är svart och pesten härjar. Det är som att staden har blivit lämnad att dö en långsam död. I staden drar en varelse utan namn runt. Han kan inte dö, men dödar gärna. Få kan ens minnas honom, trots att han står framför dem. Det är som att han är osynlig.
Han blir anställd av en magiker och går hans ärenden. Magikern är ute efter hämnd och har en plan för staden som inte gett honom något annat än lidande. Han tänker återgälda staden tiofaldigt, om han så måste dö för att sätta sin plan i verket.


Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken flög mig nog lite över huvudet. Jag förstod inte riktigt syftet med den. Vad vill man berätta och varför? Kände inte att jag fick nåt grepp om det. Boken är mest väldigt konstig och jag har normalt sett inget emot konstigheter, snarare tvärtom, men det här var någon helt annan typ av konstig som jag inte fattade. Relationen mellan Florian och Johann var väldigt knepig och jag förstod inte varför. Boken är stundtals ganska brutal, vilket jag inte har något emot men det gick lite för långt ibland med alla anatomiska detaljer. Det kändes inte som att de fyllde något syfte utan hade lagts till bara för att. En väldigt udda bok som jag inte fick nåt bra grepp om alls. Ingen av karaktärerna var speciellt sympatiska. Handlingen kändes lite för brokig. Det var väldigt många spår och en för utvecklad värld med tanke på hur kort boken var. Det blev för många trådar för antalet sidor. Hade boken varit längre hade det säkert varit mer logiskt med alla olika spår, men här blev det för mycket.
Inte ett jättebra bok i mina ögon.

Story: Elendhaven is a gloomy little city by the sea. The industries has been abandoned, the sea is black and the plague is ravaging. It's like the city has been left to die a slow death. In the city a creature without name is walking around. He can't die but likes to kill. Few people can remember him, even if he's standing right in fron of them. It's like he's invisible.
He is hired by a magician to do his errands. The magician is out for revenge and has a plan for the city that brought him nothing but suffering. He's going to repay it tenfold, even is he has to die to set the plan in motion.

My opinion of the book: This book flew over my head I think. I didn't understand its purpose. What does it want to say and why? I didn't feel like I got a grip on that. The book is just very weird and I usually don't have anything against strangeness, rather the opposite, but this was some other kind of weird/strange that I didn't understand. The relationship between Florian and Johann was dodgy and I didn't understand why. The book was at times pretty brutal, which I don't have anything against, but it went a little too far now and again with all the anatomical details. It didn't feel like they had a purpose other than making it sound better? A very strange book that I didn't get at all. None of the characters were particularly sympathetic. The plot was a bit too much, a lot of different threads and a too evolved world for the lenght of the book. Just too many side tracks for the amount of pages. Had the book been longer it would probably have made sense but it was a bit too much.
Not a great book in my opinion.

Handling: Det är upplysningens tid och Maximilien Robespierre drömmer om ett fritt Frankrike. Han vill införa demokrati och frihet för alla magiker bland den vanliga befolkningen. Han får hjälp av en hemlig välgörare men är vägen till frihet kan ta olika former, är det verkligen den vägen han vill ta?

William Pitt är Englands premiärminister och bär på en stor hemlighet. Tillsammans med sin bästa vän Wilberforce försöker han få ett slut på slaverihandeln och underlätta livet för den vanliga befolkningen och deras magianvändning, men det är mycket som sätter käppar i hjulet för dem.

På den franska kolloniön Saint-Domingue startas ett uppror bland de förslavade människorna och snart sprider sig upprorets eldar till fler plantager och öar. Både Frankrike, England, Spanien och många fler länder ger sig in i upproret på olika sidor samtidigt som ett krig pågår i Europa. När en armé av de döda gör entré ställs allt på sin spets.

Min åsikt om boken: Detta var en något förvirrande och långdragen bok. Stundtals var den enormt intressant och spännande men stundtals så seg och tråkig. Det blev för mycket av politiska detaljer som inte riktigt fyllde något syfte medan det som verkligen kunde föra fram historien inte fick tillräckligt med plats (t.ex. slavupproret). Istället hamnade väldigt mycket fokus på t.ex. William Pitt och Wilberforces vänskap och politiska karriär, som inte var så jätteintressant. Att de stod och höll tal i flera timmar gång på gång beskrivet i detalj tillför liksom ingenting till berättelsen.
De olika typerna av magi var dock intressant att läsa om, men fick inte heller så mycket utrymme så jag är förvirrad över om detta egentligen var tänkt att vara en fantasybok eller en historisk/politisk roman? De historiska/politiska detaljerna upptog nästan allt utrymme. Det var segt.
Boken var dock helt ok, men kunde ha varit mycket bättre.

Story: It's the age of enlightment and Maximilien Robespierre dreams of a free France. He wants to introduce democracy and freedom for all magicians among the commoners. He gets help from a secret benefactor but the road to freedom can take many shapes, is this really the way he wants to take?

William Pitt is the prime minister of England and his carrying a huge secret. Together with his best friend Wilberforce he's trying to abolish the slave trade and make life easier for the commoners and their right to use of magic, but there's a lot that stands in their way.

On the french colony island Saint-Domingue a rebellion starts among the enslaved humans and soon the fires of the rebellion spreads to more plantations and islands. Both France, England, Spain and many other countries meddles in the uprising on differens sides at the same time as a war is ravaging Europe. When an army of the dead is created everything is on the line.

My opinion about the book: This was a somewhat confusing and lengthy book. At times it was very interesting and suspenseful but at times also very slow and boring. There were too many political details that didn't fulfill a purpose while the things that could have carried the story forward didn't get enough space (like the slave uprising). Instead a lot of focus was on William Pitt and Wilberforce's friendship and political careers, that wasn't really that interesting. That they tood and held speeches for hours time and time again, described in detail didn't bring anything to the story.
The differens kinds of magic was, however, very interesting, but that didn't get enough space either so I'm a bit confused about if this was really meant to be a fantasy book or a historical/political novel? The histoical/political details almost dominated the whole book. Not very entertaining.
The book was alright but could have been so much better.
