DNF - Did not finish

(English below)

It's not often that I don't finish reading a book. When I read non fiction I usually switch between it and a fiction book, so my brain doesn't overload on all the fact. It usually work very well but not this time.
I started reading the book above on my vaction i july and still haven't finished it after 4 months. I guess I just have to realise that I won't either. Dick Harrison is my favorite historian so it feels a bit sad. But this book was just too packed with facts. Too many names, years and stuff. I just couldn't keep track of anything so I couldn't finish it. On the other hand I probably should have realised that from the beginning considering the amount of pages (it's pretty thick), but I'm not that insightful!
The book is about the christian crusades in Jerusalem but also here in the Nordic countries and Europe. It can be fascinating, to get to know what they thought and felt, but as I said... Just too much facts for my brain.

What do you do with books that's not your cup of tea? Do you always finish them or do you give up before then?

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

I finally found a book about Kalevala after searching for many years and when I was "out" bookshopping I just had to get the other books I had thought of buying for a long time. Everything arrived today. Since I play a lot of Animal Crossing right now we'll see how much I'll read, haha. There's a chance the books will remain unread for a while, but that's life.

Ariadne is about the princess of Crete and one of king Minos' daughters. She has grown up to the bellows of the Minotaur in the labyrinth beneath the palace - King Minos' greatest shame and Ariadne's brother - who demands blood every year.
When the prince of Athens, Theseus, arrives in Crete as a sacrifice Ariadne falls in love with him. But helping Thesus means betraying her family and in a world ruled by fickled gods it might be fatal to draw their attention to oneself. Ariadne has heard too many tales of women being punished for the acts of men but she is determined to set her own fate. Will her decision to help Theseus ensure her happy ending? Or will she find herself sacrificed for her lover's ambitions?

Den konserverade Änkan ("The Canned Widow") is about Sara who lives in Stockholm in the year of 1779. She's just been married to the twice as old furniture artist Georg Haupt. Little does she know that 5 years later she'll be a widow, have 7 children and the responsibility of a famous workshop. People around her pressure her to get married again. Her most eager suitor is the one she fears the most, a man who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the workshop. Will Sara be able to stand against him and the powerful guild?

Romanov is about the tsar family who turned a war-torn princedom into the world's biggest imperium and then lost it all. How did that happen?
The book goes into depth about 20 tsars and tsaritsas affected by geniality and madness, unscrupulous killings and sexuell decadens.

Tutankhamon is about the famous young pharao from ancient Egypt and the discovery of his tomb. The book adresses the curse of the pharao, the life of Tutankhamon and his kingdom but also the Egyptian fever that swept across Europe during the 1800's.

Kalevala is the finnish national epos about creation myths, gods, folktales and mythology. Humans with magical abilities can sing things to them and win battles through their songs. Others can turn themselves into animals. The folk songs were gathered in the 1800's and became a success.

Have you read any of the books?

Dracula - Myt och verklighet/Dracula - Myth and reality.

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author: Katarina Harrison Lindbergh.
Genre: Fakta/Non fiction, historia/history, folktro/folklore
Språk/Language: Svenska/Swedish.
Sidor/Pages: 158.

(English below)

Title: This book doesn't have an english title so I just translated it.

Story: Where did Bram Stoker get his inspiration from when he wrote is famous book about Count Dracula? What has the ruler Vlad III Dracul of 15th century Valakia to do with vampires and where does this creature come from? That and so much more is revealed in this book!

My opinion about the book: I've been fascinated by Vlad the Impaler since I was a teenager, mostly because of all the stories about him, that we now know are fabricated but he was exciting for some reason. Who impales 20 000 people alive and eats dinner in the middle of all the tortured screams? Well, not Vlad obviously but that was the image that was spread around and is still very much alive. He somehow became connected to the vampire Count Dracula and those two will probably still be one and the same in the future.
The book is very suspenseful and it's very clear that the author has done a lot of research. You get to know more about Vlad the Impaler and where the myth about vampires comes from and what people thought a vampire was and did. Then Bram Stoker came along and immortalized this creature that has pretty much just grown in popularity since then. It was not him though that connected Vlad with Count Dracula. That's a more recent thing actually. The book is packed with facts, history and folklore. Even in Sweden grave goods have been found that points to the buried being seen as a vampire. Very exciting! Despite all the facts it's easily read, entertaining and really good. A new favorite for sure!

I give it 4.5 of 5💀

My favorite quote from the book (my own translation):

"One of the oldest written down vampire story comes from Alnwick in England. It's from the 1100's. The villagers in Alnwick were haunted by a dead nobleman. He had lived an evil and dissolute life and death gave him therefore no peace. During the night he ravaged the village and spread a horrible sickness. Many died and others fled from Alnwick."

When Women Ruled the Word.

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author: Kara Cooney.
Genre: Historia/history, fakta/non fiction, arkeologi/archeology.
Språk/Language: Engelska/English.
Sidor/Pages: 320.

(English below)

Mitt favoritcitat ur boken:

"The king used the jubilees to marry two of his own daughters, bringing them into the royal bed and the royal harem, just as the sun god had done with the sky goddess Hathor."
- Sid 164.

"The double standard is clear: Violence is excusable for men. In fact, it makes them seem more powerful. But a woman's militarism is considered so aberrant that it's unsettling."
- Sid 244

"Even though Cleopatra didn't accompany the expedition, the Romans blamed the failure on her directly, claiming that Antony was so overcome with his desire to return to her that he lost all reason and strategic thinking, that she had addled his mind with Egyptian magic and even intoxicants, that she had simply emasculated him."

Story: This is a non fictional book about 6 different female egyptian queens/pharoes; Merneith during the first dynasty (300-2890 BCE), Neferusobek of dynasti 12 (1991-1802 BCE), Hatshepsut and Nefertiti of dynasti 18 (1550-1295 BCE), Tawosret of dynasti 19 (1292-1189 BCE) and Cleopatra VII of the Ptolomaic dynasti (305-30 BCE).
The ancient egyptian state system was very patriarchial and the only way for a woman to rule was if she was the last of her family or if the new king was too young. Otherwise a woman had nothing to do on the throne. Yet at least 6 women got to the top and ruled one of the ancient world's biggest kingdoms. How did that happen and how did they circumvent the patriarchial structures?
This is the story of 6 womens' way to the power against all odds!

My opinion about the book: Oh man, this book is so good, exciting and a real eye opener! I love ancient times, mythologies and such, so Egypt is a bit of a nerd thing for me. We watch a lot of shows about archeological excevations and so on, so I pretty much just devoured the book. It's very clear and obvious that the author is an archeologist, because the book is well researched and anchored to facts, which I think is very important when it comes to non fiction. It's unfortunately not an obvious rule for all non fictional writers, but this author is very careful about pointing out what's facts and what are speculations/suspicions. It's also very clear that the author is teaching gender studies at the university because the book as another viewpoint than what I'm used to. Most non fiction books are generally written by men, especially when it comes to history and people often don't think about the roll women had or why they rarely ever had any power. So this book is like a fresh breeze. I've learned so much new and exciting things about Egypt (like human sacrifices of nobles when the kings died during the first dynasty or that incest was not just between siblings but also parents and children....) and at the same time the facts haven't been too much. It was never required of me to keep track of all the years, places or names like it usually is, because the author put her focus on the story of these women or what the evidence show. I can't praise this book enough! So good, well written, exciting and amazin!
I will easily give it 5 of 5 💀.

Kättarna/The heretics.

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author:
Dick Harrison.
Genre:
Historia/history, fakta/non fiction.
Språk/Language:
Svenska/Swedish.
Sidor/Pages:
174.

(English below)

- Sid 42.

Title: This books doesn't have an english title so I just translated it from swedish to english.

Story: Where does the word "heretic" come from and what did it mean from the beginning? Could anyone be called that or did it take something special? What happened to those who were seen as heretics and what were the punishment for heresy? That and so much more is revealed in this book!

My opinion of the book: I will try to make this short, because when it comes to this subject I can really get carried away. Dick Harrison is, as you well know, a favorite of mine. This book is as usual easy to read, suspensful and easy to understand, which is a long standing feature of this author. He makes history come to life and makes it entertaining, unlike some historians that just recite facts up and down, which is not always fun. Harrison has a special skill of storytelling that captures and retain the reader's interest from the beginning to the end.

When it comes to the subject itself it's of course a lot about the church, since it's close to us here in Europe, but heretics had been around far longer than christianity, but few have had such a grip on the world as christianity for so long, so it's not surprising that a lot of focus is on that. I am anti organized religion and a book like this one doesn't really make you more positive towards it, to say the least. Everything is about power, status and money. As usual. But it's still interesting to read about all the squabble and feeling threaten by everything.

What I found most intriguing was that many "sects"/heretics were against the organized church because of corruption and power. Many thought, many hundred years ago, if not more, that the church had strayed away from the original message of Jesus and corrupted his legacy. It was surprising that so many thought that during different centuries and it wasn't popular with the church. It didn't end well for those people but I really do agree with them. Anywho, the book is great and so exciting. If you're a history lover then you must read Dick Harrisons' book because he's so good!

My favorite quote (my own translation):

"The main doctrine in the paulician faith was that the Old testament must be rejected as dangerous writing and that the god in the books of the Old testament is an evil force - almost a demiurg - while the God of the New testament is the true god."

Yasuke - the True Story of the Legendary African Samuari

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author(s): Thomas Lockley & Geoffrey Girard.
Genre: Historisk fakta/historical non fiction, Biografi/biography.
Språk/Language: Engelska/English.
Sidor/Pages: 402.

(English below)

Mitt favoritcitat ur boken:

"For example, the Portuguese king had forbidden his subjects, which included the Jesuits who were under his patronage, from engaging in Japanese slavery in 1570. But such slavery (occuring long before the Jesuits) carried on regardless and the Jesuits were now prime participants in this human trafficking."
- Sid 62.

"His skin was black like ink and he was around 6.2 shaku (over 6'2''/188 cm) tall. He was called Yasuke".
- Sid 261.

Story: How come an african ended up in Japan durin the end of the 1500's and became a samurai of one of the most powerful man in the country? What did his life look like and how did it end? This is a book about one very special person's life story.

My opinion about the book: I read historical non fiction and biographies now and then, so I really looked forward to read about Yasuke's life, because his story is very interesting, but this book is so wrong for a lot of reasons. First of all, maybe 40% of the book is about Yasuke and maybe 10% of those 40% is based on facts, the rest is just make believe or speculations, which is not clear in the book (that it's speculation) if you don't pay close attention to the notes in the back of the books. The other 60% is about Japan during this time, which is very interesting, but should not be the main focus in a book about an african samurai!

The book is a mess. No one knows where Yasuke came from, other than africa, no one knows what he thought or felt about anything, since he didn't leave anything in writing and no one cared to ask him and save it for the future, yet the authors' know exactly what he felt in a certain situation or what he liked doing. It's so wrong. That is NOT facts and absolutely not how to write a biography! It's a cardinal sin, according to me, to make stuff up in a non fiction book/biography. And then go out and marketing it as "the true story" when it's hardly based on facts. Not ok!

Had the book been about Japan during the 1500's and had a short chapter about Yasuke, solely based on the actual sources that exist, the book would have been great. I would have given it a 5 out of 5 (if I had a grading system), because you can tell that the parts about Japan during this time is based on facts unlike the parts about Yasuke, which is only speculation and wishful thinking. I wouldn't give this book more than 2 out of 5 because of that. I think it's disrespectful to write a book about a very interesting person's life and not base it on facts, make stuff up and then make money off of it. It's wrong! I highly recommend reading more about Yasuke, because his life (that is known) is very intriguing, but not by this book. Such a disappointment.

My favorite quote from the book:

"For example, the Portuguese king had forbidden his subjects, which included the Jesuits who were under his patronage, from engaging in Japanese slavery in 1570. But such slavery (occuring long before the Jesuits) carried on regardless and the Jesuits were now prime participants in this human trafficking."

Kvinnor och kungar - Women and kings.

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author: Ove Bring.
Genre: Fakta/Non fiction, historia/history.
Språk/Language: Svenska/Swedish.
Sidor/Pages: 263.

(English below)

Title: This book doesn't have an english title so I just translated it.

Story: How come Sweden kept itself neutral for many years and avoided war for 200 years? How come a french general under Napoleon ended up on the swedish royal throne? What did people of the time think about war and peace?
Some of the women during that time didn't hesitate to share their opinions, like Madame de Staël, Fredrika Bremer, Olympe de Gouges and Mary Wollstonecraft.

My opinion of the book: This is an interesting book about both Europe during the revolution but also about Sweden's history and view on war. Even if women are rarely given a spot in our history books it doesn't mean they were silent, quite the opposite. Many were well known authors that didn't hesitate to make their opinions public and shaping opinion. Others were rich socialites that held clubs in their homes and discussed their opinions, religion, human rights and so on with like minded people. A very interesting book in my taste! I was amused about Sweden's recruitment of general Bernadotte. That they went to France and practically tried to pick up anyone who wanted to become king rather than putting a danish royalty on the swedish throne. A book worth reading if you like history and want to know how Sweden's foreign politics became what it became.

My favorite quote from the book (my own translation):

"His first name Jean became Johan in swedish, but the swedishness and patriotism also required that the revered kings name Karl was attached to the crown prince's official royal name. He now went under the name Karl Johan, the name given to the king of mushroom that he often ate."

When Le husband needed new coloring pens we went to Akademibokhandeln and I couldn't refrain myself from checking out books, so I came home with yet another book. But oh well, shit happens... Haha. The cover just caught my eye so I couln't part with the book at all. I love when someone really puts the effort into creating an interesting cover unlike any other. I usually think that swedish book covers are all the same. It's like they all have the same reference point and just change the coloring a little bit. It's like the graphic designers (or whatever they're called) all went to the same school. Really boring! So it's really fun when someone dares to do something new. It'll also be fun to read the book of course.

Djävulen i den vita staden / The Devil in the White City.

(English below)

Story: After the world famous exposition in Paris in 1880, when the Eiffel tower was built, the americans want to join the race. Especially a couple of architects in Chicago. Despite their city being the second largest city it's looked down upon. Chicago consists of soot, black smoke and slaughterhouses. It wasn't good for anything else, so when people want to hold a huge exposition there of all places, there's an outcry all over the country. The idea of having something so sophisticated as an exposition in such a dirty city is laughed at, but shame on him who gives up. With the atchitect Daniel H. Burnham in the lead the city is able to build a fairytale land in just a few years which astounds the world.

In another part of the city there's a man by the name of H.H. Holmes, a very handsome and attractive man with intense blue eyes. He seems to possess a kind of magnetism that makes men want to be his friend and women to become is paramour. Holmes knows very well of the affect he has on people and is using it to embezzle money, con people of their properties and take lives. He has a sick fascination for dying people. For him there's something very exciting about people on the verge of death. He seems to think that the more terrified the person is the better.

My opinion of the book: This was not what I was expecting. I thought this was a fictitious crime novel, but it's non fiction/biography! Talk about being clueless, haha. I was a bit confused when there was so much facts about the bulding of the white city (the exposition) before I finally realised what was up. Every other chapter is about the building of the city and H.H. Holmes. I really liked the parts about Holmes, because they were very interesting compared to those about the city. It wasn't that interesting to know about the kind of material that was used, how they were digging and where, how many people worked there or how to drain ditches of water and so on. It was very boring in my opinion. But the book is very well written and it is obvious that the author really did his research, so if you're interested in how buildings were erected back in the days then this book is great. But it wasn't my cup of tea. It was alright, but not much more than that.

My favorite quote from the book: Since this book is about so many different things I didn't find a quote that was fitting.

Kvinnorna historien glömde/The women history forgot

Title: This book doesn't have an english title so I just translated the swedish title.

Story: Have you heard of Germaine de Staël, the woman Napoleon hated? Or maybe Julie-Émilie Maupin, the singer with a temper? Or Pulcheria, the ruthless maiden? In this book you get to meet them and 4 other women that the history books rarely includes. Each woman stood up for themselves and against different forms of oppression, often misogyni, in their own way and lived life the way they wanted.

My opinion of the book: This is a really good non fiction book about 7 interesting women that I didn't know about. What I like the most about these women and this books is that they're not "perfect". Women are often portrayed as either perfect (silent, diligent, obedient) or problematic (talking to much or loud, behaves "inappropriate", has opinions and so on), unlike men who are portrayed in a neutral way, no matter how they behave or what they've done. These women has good and bad sides, just like it's suppossed to be. No one's perfect!

The book is easoly read, unlike some non fiction books, so it didn't take long to finish it. Each chapter is about one specific person and if there are pictures of that person then they were included along with maps over countries/cities of that time. The only negative thing I can think of is that there were some misspellings, but they didn't bother me so much and that I wish there had been a bit more diversity when it comes to the people in the book. Except two, everyone was european. I'd love to read somehing like this about historical women from african or south american countries. I don't know how well documented historical women could have been in these countries, but there must be something somehwere! Other than that the book was really good and very entertaining. Really recommend it!

My favorite quote from the book: I have not chosen a quote since the book is about so many different people, so demonstrating the atmosphere in the book with just one quote would be hard.

Story: Hana and Emi har sisters in live in Korea during the 1940's. Just like her mom Hana is a free diver. It's an old tradition on the island that the women swim and dive in the ocean for different kinds od food that they sell at the market. Emi is too young to dive, but Hana just started following her mom down into the depth.

Japan is occupying Korea and is trying to forbid everything; the culture, the language, songs, names and so on. Each person gets a japanese name and must speak japanese, otherwise they'll get into trouble. A lot of men has been forced to enroll and fight in the japanese army and sometimes girls has disappeared without a trace. Hana and Emi must keep themselves as far away as they can from the soldiers. But one day a soldier is closing in on Emi, who's sitting alone on the beach guarding the catch her mom and sister has gathered from the ocean. Hana must protect her sister and make sure she's not discovered but doing so she condemn herself to a horrible life in captivity...

My opinion of the book: This book consists of so much and I have a little trouble with putting words to what I feel. It's on one side very beautiful and lovely but on the other hand so terribly horrible. The book is based on true events, which just makes it all worse. When Japan occupied Korea they not only banned the korean language and culture, but they also kidnapped girls and forced them into sex slavery. As many as 100 000 - 200 000 girls/women were held as sex slaves in brothels for japanese soldiers and 80% of them were koreans. It's so horrible and vile that you can hardly believe it. Japan has not been willing to take responsibilty for this, but instead claimed that the girls/women were there by free will as prostitutes, but in the 90's a women who was forced to live as a "comfort woman", as they were called, came forward and told her story, which sparked others to come forward saying they had been through the same thing. There were protests in South Korea outside of the Japanese embassy and statues in the memory of these "comfort womens" were erected. Eventually Japan agreed to pay 1 billion yen (approx. $1,8 million) to the South Korean government as consolation pretty much. If I remember correctly, this agreement was done last year, but I don't know if it has actually been fulfilled yet.

The books is very interesting and gripping. It describes abuse, exploitation and shame but also strenght, survivial and love. If you get triggered by sexual violence, then dont read this book. But otherwise I think it's a book that should be read in senior high school. This is really something that is not taught in school! I hardly new anything about how Korea became two, very different, countries or that Japan had been occupying what used to be Korea, but here you find out why and how. I really recommend this book, but it will not be an easy read.

My favorite quote from the book (my own translation):

"Her picture is now hanging on the wall next to the others on the stairs. Her face is looking out on the visiting soldiers so that they'll know that they must stand in a queue outside door number 2 if they choose her for the time they've been dealt. The soldiers get at most 30 minutes alone with her; the officers and hour. She's like a dish of food on a menu: considered, bought and consumed."

Nytt i hyllan/New on the shelf

(English below)

Last saturday Le Husband wanted us to go for a walk to get some exercise and after 50 minutes of biting winds from Nifelheim I just wanted to lie down and die in a bush! In the end I said "We've been walking for hours!" and Le Husband answered "Bah, we've only walked for nearly 50 mins!". Exercise is plain evil. There's hardly anything worse than that! It's so boring going on walks and I have a sucky body so I get blisters on my feet and my body goes on a strike for like 3 years afterwards (fibromyalgia). But, on the way home I remembered I had a gift card at Akademibokhandeln so we went in there 5 minutes before they closed! I actually managed to find two books during that short amount of time. I felt like I needed to comfort myself after that horrible ordeal, haha.

Do you like to read non fiction books and if so, about what?

(English below)

Ganska bisarrt men ändå logiskt.

Mitt favoritcitat ur boken:

Om guden Xipe:
"Xipe (the Flayed) was widely worshipped throughout Mexico, and is usually depicted in the pinturas as being attired in a flayed human skin. At his special festival, the 'Man-flaying', the skins were removed from the victims and worn by the devoteesof the god for the succeeding twenty days."

Story: What do we know about the early people of South America? Who built the huge stone pyramids in the middle of the djungel? What were the names of their gods and what were their powers? What are their creation stories and what seperates the people from each other?

My opinion of the book: This was an interesting book to read, even though it was a bit hard to grasp at times. Partly because the name of the gods are very gender neutral for me and pretty much alike each other, so it was hard to keep track of who's who. Especially when the names contain a lot of "zlatlan"-ends and such and partly because the text is written in a very technical language in english, so it wasn't easy to get everything. But the book was intriguing to read over all, because there was a lot I didn't know! I also feel like people in general often mix the incas with the aztecs, like they were the one and the same when that's not true. The Incas lived in Peru and the aztecs in Mexico and in different time periods as well. It was also interesting to get to know more about why the dealt so much in human sacrifices like the aztecs did. They believed that without human blood the gods would die which meant the end of the world, so they had to keep feeding them. Pretty bizarre but kind of makes sense. They built individual temples for each god and some temples had several different rooms that were dressed in gold, silver, seashells, feathers and so on. Must have been a pretty big deal seeing a room like that!
If you're interested in the aztecs, mayans, incas and so on, and can take the technical language in english then this is the perfect book for you! It's packed with facts and interesting legends about several gods but also information about the different peoples in general.

My favorite quote from the book:

Witches - The history of a persecution

Språk/Language: Engelska/English.
Sidor/Pages: 230.

(English below)

There neither are nor ever were witches that, having made a compact with the Devil, can send a devil to torment other people at a distance", he said. Denying the existence of witchcraft was proof of being a witch". Logiken...

Mitt favoritcitat ur boken:

"The fear of witches was also widespread among the Germanic peoples, who spread throughout Europe during the decline of the Roman Empire. As in the Greco-Roman world, such powers were especially attributed to women, and the old hag who practised witchcraft became a common figure in litterature. In Northern Germany, sacred women were venerated as tribal soothsayers as women were the conduit of nature."
- sid 34.

💥        💥        💥        💥

Story: During approx. 300 years around 100 000 people (mostly women) stood accused of witchcraft in both Europe and colonial America. Tens of thousand people were burnt at the stakes. You didn't even have to do anything wrong, it was enough if someone accused you of being a witch and you'd be done. No matter how hard you try to prove your innocense you would not be believed, because isn't that exactly what a follower of the Devil would say? But what was these people really punished for and what was the thought process in the different countries when all of this went on? Why did people think torture was a good method to extract the truth from people and not exactly the opposite?

My opinion of the books: This is a well packed book about different witch trials around the western world. The book is based of trial documents and demonstrates a pretty interesting connection between a chaotic world and an increased risk for hysterias like this one to emerge and spread like wildfire. It is also clear that people weren't interesting in getting the to the truth, they just wanted someone to blame and torture. Young, beautiful women were especially targeted for this (suprising...). But not even children got away from the torure chamber or the stake. A bunch of sadists were free to roam the lands and do their thing.

Just to illustrate how people were thinking during this time, I'll give an example from page 17, where an accused man called Reverend Burroughs says the following: "There neither are nor ever were witches that, having made a compact with the Devil, can send a devil to torment other people at a distance", he said. Denying the existence of witchcraft was proof of being a witch". The logic... Even a dog was accused in Salem and was found to be a witch. It was hanged. I think this illustrates humankind pretty well, since this in neither the first or the last time something like this has happened (The holocaust, the genocide in Rwanda and other places and so on). And then the typical misogyny. If a woman was too beautiful, smart, strong, powerful, "ugly", unpleasent or "wild" she must be in league with Satan. "Real" women were reserved, followed the protocol and did what they were told. We have made some progress regarding that, but not as much as we'd like to think... A very good and informative book, all though it contains some descriptions of torture, but without it being too much. It's worth a read!

My favorite quote from the book:

"The fear of witches was also widespread among the Germanic peoples, who spread throughout Europe during the decline of the Roman Empire. As in the Greco-Roman world, such powers were especially attributed to women, and the old hag who practised witchcraft became a common figure in litterature. In Northern Germany, sacred women were venerated as tribal soothsayers as women were the conduit of nature."

Vålnadernas historia/The History of Ghosts

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author: Magnus Västerbro.
Genre: Fakta/Non fiction.
Språk/Language: Svenska/Swedish.
Sidor/Pages: 403.

(English below)

Story: Why do people insist in believing in ghosts and life after death? Is this belief something new or have people always believed in ghosts? How has society handled death, bodies, funerals and ghost stories through out the millennia? Is there any proof of life after death? What does science and the believers say?

My opinion of the book: Magnus Västerbro starts off this book by writing about his own fear of death and fascination for the paranormal, even if he's not a believer in life after death and I find stuff like this to be very interesting. I personally don't understand fear of death and the need to feel like there's something "more" in life and after death. I guess I'm one of those really boringly logical people, but at the same time I think it's very comfortable to feel that I live because I was born and that life is mine to do whatever I want with. I think that I'm more present here and now compared to those who look forward to a life after that, since I don't believe there's nothing more after death. It's the end and I only have one life, so I better live it as well as I can, kind of.

But at the same time I can, logically, understand that some people have the need to be comforted by the thought that you'll meet your loved ones again after death, but I can't believe it myself. One can always hope, but it's nothing I put my faith in. This book is very extensive when it comes to the development of ghosts and life after death from the ancient greeks to the modern world. The author also dispels the myth that everyone in the past were religious believers, because that's not true. Atheists and sceptics has always been around, but they've been accepted more or less depending on the time. If you're interested in ghosts, life after death and the development of humanity than this book is perfect! It's packed with facts and you get to meet different people who either tried to prove that ghosts existed or not and how that was seen by society over all. The book makes you think of your own view on the matter. Really good actually!

The only thing I personally found a bit hard was all the facts, haha. But it's a non fictional book after all. 400 pages of pure facts can be hard to handle, so a tip is to alter between this book and another one, so you don't get fed up, because the hard part with non fiction is all the facts and that it can get too much at times. It's not this particular book's fault, it's more how I work. So nothing negative about the book itself. I liked it alot!

My favorite quote from the book (my own translation):

"If anything, Frank Podmore, one of the movements own historian, wrote, we've found that what the living see when we try to look into the realm of the dead, is over all the shadows we cast by ourselves - our own dreams and hopes, projected into the mist of the other side".

Vikingarnas historia/The history of vikings

Serie/Series: Nej/No.
Författare/Author: Dick Harrison.
Genre: Fakta/Non Fiction.
Språk/Language: Svenska/Swedish.
Sidor/Pages: 164.

(English below)

Mitt favoritcitat ur boken (angående "svenskar" i österled):

Story: What do we know about the vikings and when they started sailing around the world? Most would agree that the attack on the monastery Lindisfarne in northen England in the year 793 was the beginning, but the vikings were already out at sea sailing before then. Were they all hardened warriors?

While those who would later  become danes and norweigans went west, the people from what would later become Sweden went to the east. While the danes and norweigans discovered Iceland, Greenland and North america, the swedes were in Constantinopel and fought for emperors and established kingdoms that still exists today.

But what is fact and what is fiction about the few vikings we know the name of?

My opinion of the book: I'm a viking nerd and I love pretty much everything containing them but Dick Harrison is a but of a favorite when it comes to non fiction books, because unlike other authors in the same genre, Harrison is very easy to understand. His stories are not as stiff and boring as non fiction books can be at times with all their numbers, years, weird names and so on, that you can't really keep track of. I didn't feel that at all while reading this books. It's very easy going and easy to understand. Harrison mixes pure facts with stories about more or less famous people and explains in a understandable way what's true and not. Definitely one of the best non fiction books I've read about the vikings! I can really recommend it.

My favorite quote from the book (about "swedes" going east. My own translation):

"A telling proof of how well the business was going is the many islamic silver coins found in the Nordic countries. According to a calculation there are around 85 000 (coins), of which 95% have been found in Sweden, and the amount will probably rise, since more are found all the time"
