Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

Jag fick ju för mig att köpa en bok om Kalevala efter många års sökande och när jag ändå var ute efter den blev det att jag köpte fler böcker som jag har tänkt köpa sedan länge. Idag kom allt fram till slut. Eftersom jag spelar en hel del Animal Crossing just nu får vi väl se hur mycket jag får läst, haha. Risken är ju att det hamnar på efterkälken men jaja, så kan det vara ibland.

Ariadne handlar om prinsessan av Kreta och ena dottern till kung Minos. Hon har växt upp till vrålet av Minotauren i labyrinten under palatset - kung Minos stora skam och hennes bror - som kräver blodsoffer varje år.
När prinsen av Aten, Thesus, kommer till Kreta som blodsoffer till Minotauren faller Ariadne för honom. Men om hon hjälper honom betyder det att hon måste förråda sin familj och i en värld som styrs av nyckfulla gudar kan det vara ödesdigert att dra till sig uppmärksamhet. Ariadne har hört mängder med historier om kvinnor straffats för mäns gärningar men hon är inställd på att gå ett annat öde till mötes. Kommer hennes beslut att hjälpa Thesus att leda till ett lyckligt slut? Eller kommer hon bli ett offer för sin älskares ambitioner?

Den Konserverade Änkan handlar om Sara som lever i Stockholm år 1779. Hon har nyligen gifts bort med den dubbelt så gamla möbelkonstnären Georg Haupt. Föga anar hon att bara 5 år senare är hon änka, har sju barn och ansvar för en berömd verkstad. Påtryckningar från omgivningen om att hon ska gifta om sig hopar sig. Hennes ivrigaste uppvaktare är den hon fruktar mest, en man som inte skyr några medel i sin jakt på att ta över verkstaden. Kan Sara lyckas stå emot honom och det mäktiga skrået?

Romanov handlar om den ryska kejsarsläkten som förvandlade ett krigshärjat furstendöme till världens största imperium och sedan förlorade allt. Hur gick det till?
Boken berättar ingående om 20 olika tsarer och tsaritsor som drabbats av genialitet och galenskap, samvetslöst dödande och sexuell dekadens.

Tutankhamon handlar om den berömda unga faron från antika Egypten och upptäckten av hans gravkammare. Boken tar upp allt från myter om faraons förbannelse, Tutankhamons liv och rike samt Egyptenfebern som drog igenom Europa på 1800-talet.

Kalevala är det finska nationaleposet som handlar om skapelsemyter, gudar, folktro och mytologi. Människor med magiska krafter kan sjunga till sig saker och vinna strider genom sin sång. Andra kan förvandla sig till djur. Folksångerna samlades ihop under 1800-talet och blev en succé.

Har ni läst några av böckerna?

I finally found a book about Kalevala after searching for many years and when I was "out" bookshopping I just had to get the other books I had thought of buying for a long time. Everything arrived today. Since I play a lot of Animal Crossing right now we'll see how much I'll read, haha. There's a chance the books will remain unread for a while, but that's life.

Ariadne is about the princess of Crete and one of king Minos' daughters. She has grown up to the bellows of the Minotaur in the labyrinth beneath the palace - King Minos' greatest shame and Ariadne's brother - who demands blood every year.
When the prince of Athens, Theseus, arrives in Crete as a sacrifice Ariadne falls in love with him. But helping Thesus means betraying her family and in a world ruled by fickled gods it might be fatal to draw their attention to oneself. Ariadne has heard too many tales of women being punished for the acts of men but she is determined to set her own fate. Will her decision to help Theseus ensure her happy ending? Or will she find herself sacrificed for her lover's ambitions?

Den konserverade Änkan ("The Canned Widow") is about Sara who lives in Stockholm in the year of 1779. She's just been married to the twice as old furniture artist Georg Haupt. Little does she know that 5 years later she'll be a widow, have 7 children and the responsibility of a famous workshop. People around her pressure her to get married again. Her most eager suitor is the one she fears the most, a man who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the workshop. Will Sara be able to stand against him and the powerful guild?

Romanov is about the tsar family who turned a war-torn princedom into the world's biggest imperium and then lost it all. How did that happen?
The book goes into depth about 20 tsars and tsaritsas affected by geniality and madness, unscrupulous killings and sexuell decadens.

Tutankhamon is about the famous young pharao from ancient Egypt and the discovery of his tomb. The book adresses the curse of the pharao, the life of Tutankhamon and his kingdom but also the Egyptian fever that swept across Europe during the 1800's.

Kalevala is the finnish national epos about creation myths, gods, folktales and mythology. Humans with magical abilities can sing things to them and win battles through their songs. Others can turn themselves into animals. The folk songs were gathered in the 1800's and became a success.

Aztec Myths

Handling: Vad vet vi om de tidiga folken i Sydamerika? Vilka byggde de enorma stenpyramiderna mitt i djungeln? Vad hette deras gudar och vad var deras krafter? Hur lyder deras skapelseberättelser och vad skiljer sig folken emellan?


Min åsikt om boken: Detta var en intressant bok att läsa, även om den var lite svår att ta till sig, i alla fall för min del. Dels är gudarnas namn väldigt könsneutrala för min del och rätt lika varandra, så det var svårt att hålla koll på vem som var vem. Speciellt när det är längre namn som innehåller en hel del "zlatlan"-delar och liknande. Och dels är språket lite väl fackmannamässigt på engelska, så det var inte helt enkelt att förstå allt. Men boken var spännande överlag, för det var mycket jag inte visste! Jag upplever att gemene man ren generellt blandar ihop t.ex. inkafolket och azteker, som att de vore samma sak, när det inte stämmer. Inkariket fanns i Peru medan aztekerna levde i Mexiko om jag inte minns fel nu. De levde inte under samma tidsperiod heller. Det var också väldigt intressant att få reda på varför man höll på med så mycket människooffer som aztekerna gjorde! Utan människoblod trodde man att gudarna skulle dö, så man var tvungen att mata dem hela tiden. För om gudarna dog, så gick ju hela världen under trodde man. Ganska bisarrt men ändå logiskt. Man byggde individuella tempel för varje gud och vissa tempel hade flera olika rum som var inredda på olika sätt. En del var helt klädda i guld, silver, snäckor, fjädrar och liknande. Måste ha varit en ganska stor upplevelse att se ett sånt rum!
Om man är intresserad av azteker, maya, inka och liknande samt kan ta fackmannaspråk på engelska är detta helt klart en passande bok. Den är packad med fakta och intressanta legender om ett flertal gudar men också information om folkslagen i sig.

Story: What do we know about the early people of South America? Who built the huge stone pyramids in the middle of the djungel? What were the names of their gods and what were their powers? What are their creation stories and what seperates the people from each other?


My opinion of the book: This was an interesting book to read, even though it was a bit hard to grasp at times. Partly because the name of the gods are very gender neutral for me and pretty much alike each other, so it was hard to keep track of who's who. Especially when the names contain a lot of "zlatlan"-ends and such and partly because the text is written in a very technical language in english, so it wasn't easy to get everything. But the book was intriguing to read over all, because there was a lot I didn't know! I also feel like people in general often mix the incas with the aztecs, like they were the one and the same when that's not true. The Incas lived in Peru and the aztecs in Mexico and in different time periods as well. It was also interesting to get to know more about why the dealt so much in human sacrifices like the aztecs did. They believed that without human blood the gods would die which meant the end of the world, so they had to keep feeding them. Pretty bizarre but kind of makes sense. They built individual temples for each god and some temples had several different rooms that were dressed in gold, silver, seashells, feathers and so on. Must have been a pretty big deal seeing a room like that!
If you're interested in the aztecs, mayans, incas and so on, and can take the technical language in english then this is the perfect book for you! It's packed with facts and interesting legends about several gods but also information about the different peoples in general.

Handling: Grekisk mytologi består av många gudar och gudinnor som denna bok tar upp och presenterar. Varje gud/gudinna har sin egen berättelse och sina egna områden som de har ansvar över. Men något som förenar dem är att de alla verkar vara både narcissistiska och svartsjuka, vilket påverkar den vanliga dödliga på rätt brutala sätt ibland. Den som utmanade gudarna kunde förvänta sig att bli hämnade på och möjligen ha oturen att förvandlas till något ganska obehagligt. De grekiska gudarna var inte rädda för att lägga sig och påverka människors liv, både till det bättre och det sämre. För dem fanns det inte mer spännande och underhållande, vilket inte alltid var så uppskattat...


Min åsikt om boken: Mytologier överlag är lite av en svag sida hos mig, jag älskar dem. Grekisk mytologi är väl ganska känd, men jag hade inte så jättebra koll på varje individuell gud/gudinna eller vad de ansvarade för. Hade inte heller stenkoll på hur de skapades eller vilka som var deras föräldrar osv, så denna bok var väldigt givande att läsa. Den är informativ, lättläst och är full av fina illustrationer. Den passar så väl yngre som äldre som vill veta mer om de grekiska gudomligheterna. Helt klart ett tips!

Jag har valt att inte ha med ett citat den här gången, för det kändes svårt att välja ett när boken handlar om så många olika personer och historier. Istället kan man få lite trivia: Mina favoriter ur just grekisk mytologi är Artemis, Hecate, Kirke och Medusa. Jag har omedvetet påbörjat ett mytologitema vad gäller mina tatueringar och jag letar alltid efter inspiration till fler. Medusa kommer jag helt klart att tatuera in. Något mer omedvetet som jag tydligen har "bestämt" utan att veta om det är att vänsterarmen är "tjejarmen" (kvinnliga gudomer) och höger är "killarmen". Det är lite udda! Alltså inget medvetet beslut, utan det har bara blivit så. Det är intressant! Haha.

Story: Greek mythology consists of many gods and goddesses that this book presents. Each god/goddess has his/her own story and their own areas that they are responsible for. But something that unites them is that they all seem to be both narcissistic and jealous, which affects the lives of the mortals, sometimes in a very brutal way. If you challenged the gods you could expect them to take their revenge on you and possibly have the misfortune of being transformed into something pretty nasty. The greek gods were not afraid of getting involved and affect human lives, for better or for worse. To them there wasn't anything more exciting and entertaining than messing with mortals, which wasn't always appreciated...

My opinion of the book: Mythologies are somewhat of a weak point for me, I just love them. Greek mythology is pretty well krown, but I didn't have that much knowledge about each individual god/goddess or what areas they had responsibility of. The same with how they were created or who their parents were and so on, so this book was really worthwhile to read. It's informative, easy to read and full of pretty illustrations. It's well suited for both younger and older readers who wants to know more about the greek gods. Definitely a tips!

I have chosen not to include a quote this time, because it felt really difficult to choose one when the book is about so many different people and stories. So instead, here's some trivia: My favorites from greek mythology is Artemis, Hecate, Circe and Medusa. I have unconsciously begun a mythology theme when it comes to my tattoos and I'm always looking for inspiration for more. Medusa is definitely something I will get tattooed. Something else that I have unconsiously "decided" without even knowing is that the left arm is the "girl arm" (female goddesses) and the right is the"boy arm". That's a bit odd! I really didn't make that decision consciously, it just happened, which is a bit interesting, haha.

The Song of Achilles

Handling: Patroclus (Patroklos på svenska) är en ung prins i exil på grund av en olyckshändelse som förändrar hela hans liv. Istället för att leva som en prins vid sitt eget hov förvisas han till kung Peleus hov, där han även träffar prinsen Achilles (Akilles på svenska, men håller mig till de engelska versionerna). Motstridiga känslor uppstår hos Patroclus och han vet inte hur han ska hantera det. Samtidigt har Achilles mamma, gudinnan Thetis storslagna planer för sin son, men hon avskyr Patroclus.
Achilles å sin sida har aldrig haft en nära vän. De andra vid hovet försöker mest ställa sin hos honom, något han inte verkar uppskatta speciellt mycket men Patroclus är precis tvärtom. Han är tyst och håller sig mest för själv och kanske är det därför de två kommer så bra överens?

När Helen av Sparta blir kidnappad av den trojanska prinsen Paris förväntas Achilles ställa upp och kriga med de grekiska kungarna och Patroclus följer med, både med och mot sin vilja. Ett liv utan Achilles är inte mycket att ha. Väl i Troja sätts allt på spel. Överallt finns det intriger, övermod, egon och förbjuden kärlek. Hur kan man hålla sig ifrån att bli påverkad och dras in i all galenskap?


Min åsikt om boken: Jag försökte skriva väldigt odetaljerat om handlingen på grund av att jag inte vill avslöja nåt, så den kan möjligen låta tråkigare än vad den är. Jag gillade författarens andra bok "Circe" väldigt mycket, då jag verkligen gillar hennes språk och sättet hon berättar på. Det är så målande och man dras liksom in i allt på en gång. Det upplevde jag även med den här boken, fast bra mycket mer. Det kändes som att jag var där med karaktärerna, jag kunde nästan uppleva allt som de gjorde. Hon skriver lidelsefullt och trovärdigt samtidigt som handlingen inte är för mycket åt nåt håll. Det finns romantik och humor, men även brutalitet och död, väl avvägt mot varandra på ett mycket välbalanserat sätt! Jag hoppas verkligen att hon kommer fortsätta skriva liknande böcker för de är riktigt bra. Denna boken är dock snäppet bättre än "Circe", som sagt. Enormt bra och välskriven!

Story: Patroclus is a young prince in exile because of an accident that would change his whole life. Instead of living as a prince at his father's court he is banished to king Peleus's court, where he meets the prince Achilles.
Conflicting feelings emerges in Patroclus and he doesn't know how to handle it. At the same time Achilles's mom, the goddess Thetis, has grand plans for her son but she despises Patroclus.
Achilles on the other hand has never had a close friend. The others at the court seem to try to get on his good side for their own benefit, something Achilles doesn't seem to like that much but Patroclus is different. He's quite and keeps to himself and maybe that's why they get along so well?

When Helen of Sparta is kidnapped by the troyan prince Paris Achilles is expected to fight with the other greek kings and Patroclus follows, both of his and against his own will. A life without Achilles is not worth much. In Troy everything is at stake. There's intrigues, arrogance, egos and forbidden love. How can anyone keep themselves from being affected and pulled into all the madness?

My opinion of the book: I tried to write without spoiling details because I don't want to give anything away, so it might sound alot more boring than it is. I liked the author's other book "Circe" alot, because I like the way she writes and her storytelling. It's so vivid and you're drawn into it all right away. I experienced that with this book too, but a whole lot more. She writes with such passion and so believable but the plot is yet not too much of this or that. There's romance and humor, but also brutality and death, well balanced without anything getting over hand! I really hope she continues writing books like this because they are really good. But as I said before, this book is even better than "Circe". Really good and well written!

Handling: Hur kommer det sig att den ena dottern av solguden Helios, Circe, lever i exil på ön Aiaia? Hon är dömd att leva där i ensamhet för all evighet, men om det är nåt Circe inte är bra på, så är det att göra det som förväntas av henne. Att hon dessutom har lyckats bemästra den förbjudna häxkonsten gör inte saken bättre.

Circe drivs av ett behov att bli accepterad och älskad, vilket gör att hon hamnar i situationer som gör mer skada än nytta. Men sent ska syndaren vakna. Circe går från en kärlekstörstande gudinna till en kraft att räkna med. Oavsett hur motarbetad man blir, kan man fortfarande krönas till segraren i slutändan, det handlar bara om ren och skär envishet.


Min åsikt om boken: Jag har hört lite blandade åsikter om den här boken. Vissa har hyllat den till skyarna medan andra har sagt att de inte alls gillade den. Jag tillhör ju den skaran av människor som är väldigt intresserad av mytologier överlag, så jag tyckte verkligen om att läsa Circe. Jag tyckte att språket var vackert på nåt sätt och hade ett fint flöde som verkligen gjorde mycket för själva läsupplevelsen. Även beskrivningarna av de olika gudarna gjorde det hela väldigt intressant. Handlingen, rent generellt, utspelar ju sig inte på så många platser egentligen, men det blir liksom inte tråkigt för det. Circe som karaktär är bara väldigt intressant och det var en upplevelse att få följa hennes tankar och känslor. Jag gillade boken väldigt mycket! Är man intresserad av mytologier överlag tror jag definitivt att den här boken kan falla en i smaken.

Story: How come that one of the daughters of the sun god Helios, Circe, is living in exile on the island of Aiaia? She's condemned to live there alone for all of eternity, but if there's something Circe is not good at, it's doing what is expected of her. That she also succeeded to master the art of witch craft doesn't help her cause either.

Circe is driven by the need to feel accepted and love, which puts her in situations that do more harm than good. But late shall the sinner awaken. Circe goes from being a love thirsty goddess to a force to be reckoned with. No matter how discouraged you might get, you can still end up the winner, it's just the matter of how stubborn you are.

 

My opinion of the book: I've heard a bit of mixed opinions about this book. Some have praised it alot while others have said they didn't like it at all. I'm one of those people who are really into mythologies over all, so I really liked reading Circe. I thought the language it was written in was really beautiful and that it had a nice flow to it that did alot for the reading experience. I also liked the descriptions of the goods, it made everything very interesting. The plot/story, in general, doesn't take place on so many different places, but I dont mind, it doesn't get boring despite that. Circe as a character is highly interesting and it was an experience to follow her thoughts and feelings. I liked this book alot! If you're interested in mythologies overallt, then I think this book will be right up your alley.
