Handling: Mattie bor i en enslig stuga uppe på ett berg tillsammans med William. Hon kan inte minnas ett liv innan dess. Varje dag måste hon se till att inte göra William arg eller upprörd.
En dag upptäcker hon ett stympat rävlik i skogen och hon inser att de inte är ensamma längre. Något gömmer sig bland träden och konstiga skrik hörs om nätterna. Något stort med vassa tänder och klor.
Plötsligt dyker tre vandrare upp på berget för att leta efter den här varelsen och Mattie vet att allt kommer att sluta väldigt dåligt. Deras närvaro kommer att göra William väldigt arg och hemska saker händer när han är arg.

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var som en rätt bra skräckfilm faktiskt. Det är mycket som inte stämmer, mer än det man ser på ytan. Först tror man att det handlar om Mattie och varelsen men sedan inser man att det är något konstigt med William också. Jag tycker att karaktärerna var väldigt bra gestaltade för jag hatade William så jäkla mycket. Jag ville bara att han skulle plågas och dö en långsam död i princip. Mattie tycker jag också var bra gestaltad, men stundtals var hennes tankegångar lite för upprepande. Det blev lite tjatigt emellanåt, men samtidigt kan jag förstå det pga hennes bakgrund och tillvaro.
Överlag var boken väldigt spännande. Den är både fartfylld och stillsam på samma gång, vilket man bara kan förstå om man läser den. Varelsen i skogen ger en extra dimension till handlingen men jag hade velat få veta vad det var! Och slutet var extremt abrupt. Det tyckte jag var lite antiklimatiskt, speciellt efter den uppbyggda spänningen. Jag gillar inte tvära slut, jag vill få följa med i själva upplösningen för att kunna pusta ut och känna att det ordnade sig till sist ändå. Men så blev det inte. Christina Henry är bra på att skriva om människors mörka sidor och skyggar inte för att ta till äckliga/blodiga saker, något jag faktiskt uppskattar. Det känns mer realistiskt då. Dock är hon också bra på att inte överdriva det, för det är inte heller trevligt. En mycket bra bok och författare!

Story: Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers a mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they're not alone after all.
There's something in the woods that wasn't there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws.
When three strangers appears on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. Terrible things happen when William is angry.

My opnion about the book: This was like a good horror movie actually. There's a lot that doesn't add up than what you first thought. You think it's about Mattie and the creature but then you realise that there's something strange with William as well. I think the characters are well portrayed because I hated William so much. I just wanted him to suffer and die a slow death. Mattie was also well portrayed but at times her thinking were a bit repetetive. It became nagging at times, but at the same time I can understand why considering her background and her life.
Overall the book was very suspenseful. It's both fast-paced and sedated, which you only can understand if you read it. The creature in the woods gives an extra dimension to the plot but I would have liked to know what it was! And the ending was too abrupt. I thought it was a bit anticlimatic, especially after all the suspense being built up. I don't like abrupt endings, because I want to follow it all the way through and feel like it all went well despite everything. But nope, not this time. Christina Henry is really good at writing about the dark side of people and does not shy away from adding disgusting/bloody things, something I appreciate. It feels more realistic that way. But she is also very good at not exaggerating it too, because that's not very pleasent either. A very good book and author!

Handling: Alice och Hatcher har kämpat för sin frihet och nu har det nått ganska långt ut i vildmarken. De är på jakt efter en specifik plats där de kan slå sig ner och leva resten av sina liv i frihet. Men vägen dit är lång och på vägen möter de både monster och fanatiker.

Min åsikt om boken: Jag gillade verkligen de två första böckerna ("Alice" och "Red Queen") så jag såg fram emot att läsa den tredje (och sista?) boken om Alice. Dock består den av fyra noveller som har en lös koppling till varandra och det funkar inte riktigt för mig. Det var svårt att förstå syftet med hela boken när varken kapitlen eller handlingen i sig inte hade någon större koppling till varandra eller de tidigare böckerna. Boken är dessutom bara uppdelade i 4 kapitel/noveller och stundtals är det segt. Man blir rätt omotiverad att läsa när det inte finns en röd tråd att följa. Det enda jag uppskattade var den första biten med Elizabeth. Men sen försvann hon helt och jag kände att resten var boken var ganska ologisk. Syftet med den är en gåta för min del. Jag hoppas inte att det här är hur det slutar för det vore verkligen antiklimatiskt. Samtidigt undrar jag om böckerna egentligen är en duologi? Men söker man på "The Chronicles of Alice" av Christina Henry så dyker även den här boken upp, så jag kan inte tolka det som nåt annat än den tredje boken i en trilogi. Men boken är så ologisk och malplacerad, så det blev väldigt förvirrande...

Story: Alice and Hatcher have fought for their freedom and have now reach the wilderness. They're on the hunt for a specific place where they can settle and live out the rest of their lives. But the road there is long and along the way they meet both monsters and fanatics.

My opinion about the book: I really liked the two first books ("Alice" and "Red Queen") so I looked forward to read the third (and last?) book about Alice. However, it contains four novellas with a lose connection to each other and it doesn't really work for me. It's hard to grasp the purpose with the book when neither the chapters or the story have any connection to each other or the previous books. The book is also divided into just these four chapters/novellas and at times it's really tardy. You get pretty unmotivated when reading something without a read thread to follow. The only thing I appreciated was the first bit with Elizabeth. But then she disappeared and I felt like the rest of the book was illogical. The purpose of it is a mystery to me. I hope this is not how it ends because that would be very anticlimatic. At the same time I'm wondering if the books were a duology? But when you search "The Chronicles of Alice" by Christina Henry, this book pops up so I can't really interpret it as anything other than the third book in a triology. But the book is so illogical and out of place that it gets confusing...

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

Ni vet ju hur jag är vid det här laget, haha. Efter min tid hos psykologen på Habiliteringen varannan onsdag smiter jag alltid in på Scifibokhandeln och kollar lite. Senast jag skulle till psykologen hade jag fått ett mail om att Rat Queens nummer 8 fanns inne, så jag la undan den på en gång och svängde förbi där efteråt. Älskar den serien! Så jäkla bra och underhållande. Sen råkade jag även se en ny bok av Christina Henry, så var tvungen att köpa den med. Får se när jag får dem utlästa dock, kan ju ta ett tag.

You know how I am by now, haha. After my appointment with the psychologist at Habilitation every other wednesday I always take a peek inside the Scifi book store. Last time I was about to go to the psychologist I got an email about Rat Queens #8 beeing out so pre-booked it and picked it up after the appointment. I love that series! Really awesome and entertaining. I also happened to see a new book by Christina Henry, so I had to buy that one too. I don't know when I'll read them, it might take some time.

Handling: I småstaden Smith's Hollow på 1980-talet bor 15-åriga Lauren med sin mamma och lillebror. Hon älskar att umgås med sin bästis Miranda ute i skogen men Miranda har förändrats. Istället för att springa i skogen, klättra i träd och bygga kojor vill Miranda hellre hänga i spelarkaden med killar och det är det enda hon pratar om, killar. Lauren är inte alls intresserad av det.

Ända sedan Lauren förlorade sin pappa på ett mystiskt sätt för 1 år sen har livet blivit jobbigt. Hon kommer inte riktigt överens med sin mamma Karen och nu när Miranda har börjat glida ifrån Lauren känns allt ännu värre. En dag hittas två sönderstrimlade kroppar i en trädgård och livet blir aldrig detsamma i den sömniga småstaden. Sakta men säkert avslöjas det att ett monster härjar i skogen och att ingen går säker längre. På nått sätt verkar Lauren stå mitt i centrum för allt det mystiska som händer men hur och varför är det kopplat till henne?

Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en sorts hyllning till 80-talet och dess skräckfilmer, vilket sällan är fel! Christina Henry har skrivit många bra böcker (serien om Alice i Underlandet, The Lost Boys, The Mermaid m.fl.) som alla har varit relativt råa och brutala, speciellt böckerna om Alice, så jag förväntade mig en hel del våld och/eller blod. Men jag tyckte ändå att den här boken var relativt lättsmält. Jag vet inte heller om jag skulle säga att den passar in i skräckgenren, snarare mer åt rysarhållet. Boken är dock väldigt bra. De första sidorna var lite sega, jag fick inte riktigt nåt grepp om varken Lauren eller Smith's Hollow men efter bara några kapitel var jag rätt fast.
Handlingen berättas via flera karaktärers perspektiv och tar upp olika typer av problem, bland annat rasism, sorg, alkoholism, könsroller m.m. men på ett väldigt smart sätt. Man tänker knappt på det samtidigt som man ändå blir väldigt engagerad och mer förstående för vissa karaktärers beteende (dock inte mrs Schneider, tantskrället).

Berättelsen i sig handlar egentligen om ett läskigt träd mitt ute i skogen som alla förutom Lauren ogillar. Av någon anledning känner hon sig dragen till och trygg vid trädet. Det är där hon hör hemma. Allt förändras dock när sönderslitna kroppar dyker upp. Det finns en legend i staden som alla har glömt av men som påverkar dem varenda dag. Det är själva ramen i berättelsen och man får hela tiden små bitar av pusslet, vilket så klart bara ökar ens intresse och engagemang. Jag tyckte boken var bra men slutet kändes lite... drygt. Den sista meningen var verkligen inte min grej (man förstår varför om man läser boken!) men jag tänker inte förklara närmare för då riskerar jag att avslöja nåt. En lagom ryslig bok som passar för årstiden!

Story: In the small town of Smith's Hollow during the 1980's lives 15 year old Lauren with her mother and little brother. She loves to hang out with her bestie Miranda in the woods but Miranda has changed. Instead of running around in the woods, climbing trees and building forts Miranda wants to hang out with boys and that's the only thing she talks about, boys. Lauren is no interested in that at all.

Ever since Lauren lost her father in a mysterious way 1 year ago life has been difficult. She doesn't get along with her mother Karen and now when Miranda has drifted away from Lauren everything is even worse.
One day two shredded bodies are found in a backyard and life changes forever for everyone in the sleepy small town. Slowly but surely it is discovered that a monster lurks in the woods and that no one is safe any more. Somehow it's seems like Lauren is in the centre of all the mysterious happenings but how and why is it connected to her?

My opinion about the book: This is sort of a tribute to the 80's and its horror movies, which is rarely wrong! Christina Henry has written many great books (the series about Alice in Wonderland, The Lost Boys, The Mermaid and so on) that were relatively raw and brutal, especially the books about Alice so I was expecting a fair amount of violence and/or blood. But I still thought that the book was pretty light regarding that. I don't know if I would label it as horror either, it's more like a thriller. The book is still great though. The first pages were a bit slow, I didn't really get a grip on Lauren or Smith's Hollow but after just a few chapters I was sucked right in. 

The plot is told through several characters' perspective and deals with all kinds of problems, like racism, grief, alcoholism, gender rolls and so on in a very clever way. You hardly even notice it but at the same time it engages you and makes you more understanding towards some characters behavior (except for mrs Schneider, that crone). The plot itself is really about a creepy tree in the middle of the woods that everyone except Lauren dislike. For some reason she feels drawn to it and feels safe around it. That's where she belongs. Everything changes though when shredded bodies show up. There's a legend in town that everyone has forgotten but that affect them each day. That's the framework of the story and you get small pieces of the puzzle all the time, which of course just enhances your interest and engagement. I did like the book but the end was not my cup of tea. The last sentence was just not okey (you get it if you read the book!) but I will not say why because then I might reveal something. A moderate thriller that fits the season!

Nytt i hyllan / News on the shelf

Förra veckan var så himla kass, så jag uppskattade när det ramlade in lite böcker. Både sånt som jag själv har beställt men också ett recensionsex. Jag bestämde mig också till slut för att köpa en jättedyr kudde i form av en katt, för den liknade en sur variant av min ena katt, haha. Kunde inte få den ur skallen så lika bra att slösa några hundralappar på den. Nu är jag supernöjd när den väl har anlänt!

Decagon av författaren Capes har jag som bekant redan läst och recenserat men när jag skulle köpa uppföljaren upptäckte jag att man har bytt omslag på båda böckerna och jag vill ju helst att de ska matcha, så köpte hem första boken också. En riktigt bra bok förresten, så värd att läsa!
Dunkelstjärnan är ett recensionsexemplar som författaren Joseph A. Davis har skickat. Jag gillar verkligen hans böcker om Markus av Trolyrien så ska bli riktigt kul att läsa ännu en av hans böcker, den här gången även med jättefina illustrationer!

Last week was really lousy, so I appreciated when I got books in the mail. Both those I've bought myself but also a review copy. I also finally decided to buy a very expensive pillow in the form of a cat, because it looks like an angry version of one of my cats, haha. I couldn't get it out of my head so I just had to get it. I'm very happy with my decision now that it has arrived!

Decagon by the author Capes I've already read and reviewed but when I was about to buy the sequel I noticed that the covers had changed and I want the books to match, so I bought the first book even though I already have it. A very good book btw, really worth reading!
Dunkelstjärnan is a review copy that the author Joseph A. Davis sent me. I liked his books about Markus av Trolyrien a lot so I look forward to read yet another of his books, this time with beautiful illustrations!

The Girl in Red

Handling: Red är en ung tjej i USA som har blivit tvingad till att fly ut i skogen efter ett utbrott av ett dödligt virus som sprider sig överallt. Människor börjar först hosta, ungefär som vid en vanlig förkylning, men snart hostar de upp blod tills de i princip kvävs och dör. I och med utbrottets framfart har regeringen sänt ut militären för att samla ihop människor och sätta dem i karantän bakom murar och taggtråd, något som Red inte alls är intresserad av. Om det är nånstans ett sådant virus kan sprida sig så är det i en stor samling av människor. Istället tänker hon gå flera hundra mil till sin mormors stuga, långt ute i skogen. Men en ensam kvinna borde inte röra sig i skogen, för där finns även andra människor som inte vill andra något gott. Red måste slåss för sin överlevnad och ibland göra saker hon egentligen inte vill för att inte bli ett ännu ett offer.


Min åsikt om boken: Det är en modern spinn på Rödluvan och författaren har tidigare skrivit liknande böcker om både Alice i Underlandet, Den lilla sjöjungfrun, de där vilda pojkarna i Peter Pan m.m. Jag har läst allihopa så vitt jag vet och har gillat dem, men den här boken var i en helt egen klass. Från start grep den tag i en och höll en i ett stenhårt grepp. Boken var spännande nästan hela tiden och jag hade väldigt svårt att lägga ner den. Jag tyckte att det var rätt originellt att förlägga en ny version av Rödluvan i en sorts apokalyptisk miljö där både dödliga virus och andra faror hotar. Red var en grym karaktär på så många olika sätt och man kunde verkligen förstå varför hon var som hon var; alltid förberedd och alltid hade en plan redo ifall något skulle hända. En mycket bra bok som jag verkligen kan tipsa om! Läs den om du får chansen!

Story: Red is a young girl in USA who's been forced to flee into the woods after an outbreak of a deadly virus has been spreading all over. People start to cough, like they had a cold but soon they begin to cough up blood until they pretty much suffocate and dies. Because of the outbreak the government has sent out the military to gather people up and take them to a camp to be quarantined behind walls and barbed wire, something Red is not interested in. If there's anywhere a virus will spread it'll be among a huge number of people. Instead she's going to walk several hundred miles to get to her grandma's cabin, far away into the forst. But a woman alone in the forest is not such a great idea, because not so kind people are also in there, looking for prey. Red has to fight for her survival and sometimes do things she'd rather not to avoid becoming yet another victim.

My opinion of the book: This is a modern spinn on the story of Little Red Riding Hood and the author has previously written books about Alice in Wonderland, The little mermaid, the wild boys in Peter Pan and so forth. I think I've read them all and I've liked them, but this book is on a whole other level. From the beginning it just took hold of me and wouldn't let me go. It was thrilling almost the whole time and I just couldn't put it down. I thought it was pretty original to put a new version of Red Riding Hood in a sort of apocalyptic environment with both a deadly virus and other dangers lurking about. Red was an awesome character in so many way and you could really understand why she was like she was; always prepared and always with a plan ready in case something happened. A very good book that I really can recommend! Read it if you get the chance!
