Handling: Echo bor i en liten by tillsammans med sin pappa och bror. Efter en traumatisk händelse i barndomen bär Echo stora ärr i ansiktet, vilket har gjort henne till något av en utböling. Byborna tror att hon har blivit märkt av Djävulen och undviker henne så mycket som möjligt.
När hennes pappa reser till storstaden och inte är tillbaka i rimlig tid blir Echo orolig. Hon ger sig ut i skogen för att leta och hittar honom nästan ihjälfrusen, vaktad av en stor, vit varg som ger henne ett ultimatum; bo tillsammans med vargen under ett berg i 1 år och rädda sin pappa eller vägra och låta pappa dö. Echo väljer att följa med vargen och hamnar i ett förtrollat hus där varje rum är ihopsytt med resterande rum. Där finns också ett spegelbibliotek och där träffar hon Hal, en ensam och vilse kille i sin egen ålder. Medan tiden går börjar rummen försvinna och Echo inser att hon måste komma på en lösning om hon ska kunna rädda både vargen och Hal från att också försvinna, men hur?

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var en väldigt speciell bok måste jag säga! Det är en blandning mellan ryska och nordiska sagor blandat med fantasy. Språket är väldigt speciellt, det flyter på så fint och vackert på nåt sätt. Ju mer man läser desto mer fastnar man. Den är lite seg i början innan saker och ting börjar ta sig, men sen är det en jäkla bergochdalbana utan dess like! Jag var inte alls beredd på vad som skulle komma, förutom en sak, vilket jag ju inte tänker avslöja så klart men den detaljen var ganska lätt att förutse. Men den stora twisten som kom senare var jag inte alls förberedd på och jag kunde definitivt inte sluta läsa när den väl kom! Jag var som klistrad vid boken.

Huset vargen bor i är magiskt och varje rum innehåller egna saker, bland annat spindlar som gör tråden som Echo använder för att sy ihop rummen. Sedan fanns det vattenplantor, som bokstavligt var plantor helt gjorda av vatten och jättemånga andra speciella rum som var intressanta. Det enda Echo absolut inte får göra är att lämna sitt rum efter midnatt eller tända lampan, om hon gör det kan det gå väldigt illa. Det var en kul detalj som höll spänningen vid liv, för tänk om... vad skulle hända då? Spegelbiblioteket var också häftigt och det är precis vad det låter som; speglar som var som böcker förutom att man kunde kliva in i berättelserna om man rörde vid spegeln. Det gillade jag!
Hur som, en jättespännande och bra bok som jag läste ut inom ett dygn för den var så himla bra. Kan verkligen rekommendera den!

Story: Echo lives in a small village with her father and brother. After a trauma in her childhood that left her with huge scars on her face, she has become somewhat of an outsider. The villagers think she's been marked by the Devil and avoid her as much as possible.
When her father travels to the big city and doesn't return Echo grows anxious. She heads out into the woods to look for him and finds him almost frozen to death, guarded by a huge, white wolf that gives her an ultimatum; live with the wolf under a mountain for 1 year and save her father or refuse and her father will die. Echo chooses to go with the wolf and ends up in an enchanted house, where each room is sewn together with the other rooms. There's also a mirror library and that's where she meets Hal, a lonely and lost boy in her own age. While time passes the rooms starts to disappear and Echo realises that she must find a solution to save both the wolf and Hal from disappearing too, but how?

My opinion about the book: This is a very special book! It's kind of a mix between russian and nordic fairytales with a pinch of fantasy. The storytelling is also special, it flows so smoothly and beautiful in a way. The more you read the more stuck you get. It's a little bit slow in the beginning before things happen but when it does it's a wild ride! I was not prepared for what was coming, except for one thing, that I wont reveal of course, but that "thing" was fairly easy to spot. But when the huge twist came I was not prepared at all and I couldn't stop reading! I was glued to the book.

The house the wolf lives in is magical and each room is one of a kind, like the spiders making the thread Echo uses to sew together the rooms with. Then there are water plants, which is literally plats made of water and many other very special rooms that were interesting. The only thing Echo is forbidden to do is to leave her room after midnight or turn on the light, if she does than things can go very wrong. That was a fun detail that kept the suspense up, because what if... What would happen then?
The mirror library was also cool and it's exactly what it sounds like; mirrors acting like books except you could step into the stories with a touch on the mirror. I liked that!
Anyway, this was a thrilling and awesome book that I finished in like 24 hours because it was that good. I really recommend it!

The Girl in Red

Handling: Red är en ung tjej i USA som har blivit tvingad till att fly ut i skogen efter ett utbrott av ett dödligt virus som sprider sig överallt. Människor börjar först hosta, ungefär som vid en vanlig förkylning, men snart hostar de upp blod tills de i princip kvävs och dör. I och med utbrottets framfart har regeringen sänt ut militären för att samla ihop människor och sätta dem i karantän bakom murar och taggtråd, något som Red inte alls är intresserad av. Om det är nånstans ett sådant virus kan sprida sig så är det i en stor samling av människor. Istället tänker hon gå flera hundra mil till sin mormors stuga, långt ute i skogen. Men en ensam kvinna borde inte röra sig i skogen, för där finns även andra människor som inte vill andra något gott. Red måste slåss för sin överlevnad och ibland göra saker hon egentligen inte vill för att inte bli ett ännu ett offer.


Min åsikt om boken: Det är en modern spinn på Rödluvan och författaren har tidigare skrivit liknande böcker om både Alice i Underlandet, Den lilla sjöjungfrun, de där vilda pojkarna i Peter Pan m.m. Jag har läst allihopa så vitt jag vet och har gillat dem, men den här boken var i en helt egen klass. Från start grep den tag i en och höll en i ett stenhårt grepp. Boken var spännande nästan hela tiden och jag hade väldigt svårt att lägga ner den. Jag tyckte att det var rätt originellt att förlägga en ny version av Rödluvan i en sorts apokalyptisk miljö där både dödliga virus och andra faror hotar. Red var en grym karaktär på så många olika sätt och man kunde verkligen förstå varför hon var som hon var; alltid förberedd och alltid hade en plan redo ifall något skulle hända. En mycket bra bok som jag verkligen kan tipsa om! Läs den om du får chansen!

Story: Red is a young girl in USA who's been forced to flee into the woods after an outbreak of a deadly virus has been spreading all over. People start to cough, like they had a cold but soon they begin to cough up blood until they pretty much suffocate and dies. Because of the outbreak the government has sent out the military to gather people up and take them to a camp to be quarantined behind walls and barbed wire, something Red is not interested in. If there's anywhere a virus will spread it'll be among a huge number of people. Instead she's going to walk several hundred miles to get to her grandma's cabin, far away into the forst. But a woman alone in the forest is not such a great idea, because not so kind people are also in there, looking for prey. Red has to fight for her survival and sometimes do things she'd rather not to avoid becoming yet another victim.

My opinion of the book: This is a modern spinn on the story of Little Red Riding Hood and the author has previously written books about Alice in Wonderland, The little mermaid, the wild boys in Peter Pan and so forth. I think I've read them all and I've liked them, but this book is on a whole other level. From the beginning it just took hold of me and wouldn't let me go. It was thrilling almost the whole time and I just couldn't put it down. I thought it was pretty original to put a new version of Red Riding Hood in a sort of apocalyptic environment with both a deadly virus and other dangers lurking about. Red was an awesome character in so many way and you could really understand why she was like she was; always prepared and always with a plan ready in case something happened. A very good book that I really can recommend! Read it if you get the chance!

Darkwood

Handling: Greta bor tillsammans med sin bror Hans och deras styvföräldrar (ja, båda är styvföräldrar!) på en bondgård i Myrsina. Där är det förbjudet för flickor och kvinnor att vara intresserad av vetenskap och speciellt matematik, för det är inte passande och i så fall måste man vara en häxa! Magi är förbjudet i Mersina och de som sysslar med sånt råkar illa ut.
Byn de bor i ligger nära en förbjuden skog vid namn av Darkwood. Där sägs det leva häxor, troll, féer, älvor och andra farliga varelser och ingen får gå nära skogen.

Greta råkar tyvärr vara en flicka och intresserad av matematik, vilket inte uppskattas av hennes styvföräldrar. De är rädda för att hon ska råka illa ut och därför är det ingen som vet att försvarssystemet mot Darkwoods varelser är byggt av henne. Alla tror att det är hennes bror Hans som är dess skapare.

En dag går det illa för Greta och hon blir fördriven ut ur byn och in i Darkwood. Där stöter hon på dvärgar som bara säger "yummy!" och en person i full rustning. Sedan dyker även en häxa upp som förvandlar allt hon rör vid till olika bakelser. Full av rädsla för dessa "onda" varelser försöker Greta att fly, men hon kommer inte så långt. Snart upptäcker hon dock att saker och ting kanske inte alltid är som det verkar och att ondskan kanske har ett helt annat ansikte än man först tror...


Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken var riktigt rolig och knasig! Av min beskrivning låter den säkert seriös och mörk, men den är faktiskt rätt underhållande. Författaren har skrivit boken med en hel del sarkasm och humor, vilket gör det mesta kul att läsa. Det är en salig blandning av våra mest kända sagor med en nypa fantasy och lite jävla anamma. Boken är full av action, vänskap, humor och rättvisa. Jag gillade hur de olika sagokaraktärerna hade fått helt nya roller och personligheter, vilket kändes nytänkande, men också att de alla dök upp i samma berättelse på samma plats.

Jag gillade specifika delar av boken som jag tyckte var extra roliga, t.ex. "the dipping chair" som man använder till att göra "vattenprov" på häxor. Det är en stol som sitter på en lång stör som man doppar ner i vatten. Den använder byborna till att bada med, haha. Man behöver bara låtsas säga nåt som kan uppfattas som "magiskt" eller typiskt för "häxor", så kommer folk och spänner fast en i stolen. Sedan försöker de doppa ner en där temperaturen är behaglig och frågar om man tycker allt känns bra! Mellan "doppningarna" passar man på att tvåla in sig så man blir ren, haha.
Detta var någonting nytt för min del! En riktigt underhållande bok som jag tyckte om och kan rekommendera!

Story: Gretel lives with her brother Hansel and their step parents (yes, both are step parents!) on a farm in Myrsina. It is forbidden for girls and women to be interested in science and maths, because that is not natural and you must be a witch if you are! Magic is forbidden in Mersina and it can be dangerous for those who deals in it.
The village they live in is close to a forbidden forest by the name of Darkwood. It is said that witches, ogres, fairies, elves and other dangerous creature lives there and no one is allowed to go there.

Gretel just so happens to be a girl and interested in maths, which is not appreciated by her step parents. They are afraid she'll get in trouble, so that's why no one knows that she built the defence system against the creatures of Darkwood. Everyone thinks her brother Hansel is the creator.

One day Gretel is in trouble and she is driven from the village into Darkwood. There she meets dwarves that only says "yummy!" and a person in full armour along with a witch that can turn anything the touches into pastries. Full of fear of these "evil" creatures Gretel tries to flee but she doesn't get far. Soon she discovers that things might not always be what they seem and evil might have a totally different face than you first thought...


My opinion of the book: This book was both fun and quirky! My description of it might sound serious and dark, but it was very entertaining. The author uses alot of sarcasm and humor, which is always fun to read. It's a mix of our most famous fairytales with a pinch of fantasy and fighting spirit. The book is full of action, friendship, humor and justice. I liked how the different fairtytales characters got new rolls and personalities, because it felt very original but also that they all were in the same story at the same place.

I liked specifik parts of the book that I found extra funny, like the "dipping chair" that was used to do the "water test" on witches. It's a chair attached to a long pole that you dip in water. The villagers used it for bathing, haha. You just had to pretend to say something that seemed "magical" or typical for "witches" and people would come and buckle you in the chair. They would then try to dip you where the temperature was more pleasant and ask you if everything felt alright! Between the "dippings" the person in the chair would soap themselves in to get clean, haha.
This was something new for me! A really entertaining book that I liked and can recommend!

The House with Chicken Legs

Handling: Marinka bor tillsammans med sin mormor som råkar vara den ökända Baba Yaga och deras hus råkar ha kycklingben. Huset förflyttar sig också land och rike runt utan förvarning och håller sig långt bort ifrån civilisationen, för Baba Yaga guidar det döda om kvällarna, det är vad man gör när man är en Väktare och det får inte de levande veta nåt om.

Marinka förväntas att ta över efter mormor när hennes tid är kommen, men det är nåt hon inte alls är intresserad av. Marinka vill hellre leva i närheten av de levande och uppleva vanliga saker, som att lyssna på musik, gå på marknader, dansa, gå på teater och så vidare. Men hon är förbjuden att gå längre bort än staketet som omgärdar huset (som är gjort av mänskliga skelettdelar!).

En dag träffar Marinka en livs levande människa och det blir starten av något som förändrar hela hennes liv, på gott och ont. Kan man förändra sitt öde och hur gör man det i så fall? Marinka upptäcker också att allt inte är som hon först trodde...


Min åsikt om boken: Det känns som att min beskrivning av boken gjorde så att den lät väldigt allvarlig och vuxen, haha. Men den är snarare tvärtom, en bok för lite äldre barn som gillar äventyr, magi och mytologi. Boken handlar en del om ensamhet och hur det kan kännas att från barnsben få höra vad man ska bli när man blir stor utan att egentligen ha blivit tillfrågad om det är något man ens vill bli eller göra. Handlingen är mysig och väldigt intressant. Jag gillade Baba Yaga som karaktär och jag tyckte även att Marinka bara blev bättre och bättre, ju mer hon utvecklades. Huset verkade också vara rätt kul, då det var ett livs levande hus och alltså inte bara ett hus med ben, utan en egen varelse.
Mitt i boken upplevde jag dock att handlingen blev lite tjatig och upprepande innan det började gå framåt igen, men annars var den härlig. Gillar man spöken, skelett och udda typer så lär man gilla den här boken. Passande för större barn att läsa nu i Halloweentider!

Ps, kommer även lotta ut ett ex av boken lite längre fram eftersom jag har två exemplar.

Story: Marinka lives with her grandmother, that just happens to be the infamous Baba Yaga and the house they live in just so happens to have chicken legs. The house also moves around in the world without so much as a warning and stays away from any civilisation, because Baba Yaga guides the dead at nights, that's what a Guardian does and the living can't know anything about it.

Marinka is expected to carry the torch after her grandma when her time has come, but that's not something she's interested in. Marinka would rather live closer to the living and experience ordinary things such as listen to music, visit markets, dance, go to the teather and so forth. But she is forbidden to go farther than the fence that surrounds the house (and is made of human bones!).

One day Marinka meets a living human being and that's the start of something that changes her life, for better or for worse. Can you change your destiny and if so, how? Marinka also discovers that not all is what she first thought...

My opinion of the book: It feels like my description of the book made it seem so serious and grown up, haha. But it's the opposite, a book for a bit older kids that likes adventures, magic and mythology. The book is about lonliness and what it feels that to hear from an early age what you're supposed to do when you grow up without even being asked if that's what you want. The story is cosy and interesting. I liked Baba Yaga as a character and I also liked that Marinka just got better and better the more the grew up. The house seemed fun as well, because it was alive and not just a house with legs but a living being.
In the middle of the book the story got a bit repetitive before it started to move forward again, but other than that it was just lovely. If you like ghosts, skeletons and weird people then you might like this book. Very fitting for older kids to read now when it's Halloween!

Once Upon a Dream - a Twisted Tale

Handling: De flesta har väl hört sagan om Törnrosa, den unga skönheten som förbannas på sitt dop av den onda Maleficent att dö på sin 16:de födelsedag, men vars förbannelse omvandlas av 3 goda féer till en 100-årig lång sömn. Så långt är berättelsen densamma. Men vad händer ifall prinsen som ju ska rädda Törnosa med en kyss, själv faller ner i samma sömn istället för att väcka henne? Är den långa sömnen full av drömmar och vad utspelar sig i drömvärlden i så fall eller är den helt drömlös?

Detta är en annan sida utav historien om Törnrosa som består av lögner, magi och kämparanda men också att hitta sig själv.


Min åsikt om boken: Jag är ju svag för Disney överlag, så jag läser mer än gärna böcker om diverse Disneysagor, men allra helt de med en twist. Som med "As Old as Time" har samma författare hållit sig till grunden av sagan, men skrivit den ur en annan vinkel. Är Maleficent verkligen ond? Varför har Aurora inga minnen av sina föräldrar och varför får ingen lämna slottet?

En helt ok bok med en twist, men som jag uppfattade som lite svag. Den var inte riktigt lika bra som den om Skönheten & Odjuret, men jag gillar ändå att författaren inte skriver om klassiskt svaga kvinnliga karaktärer som hela tiden måste räddas, för det är så enormt uttjatat, tråkigt och enkelriktat. Karaktärerna här är mångfasetterade och verklighetstrogna, vilket ju så klart gör mycket för berättelsen. Men som sagt, upplevde att handlingen var lite seg. Det hände egentligen inte så mycket och jag tyckte slutet var lite intetsägande. Jag hade nog förväntat mig lite mer än så. Men överlag en helt ok bok.

Story: Most of us have probably heard the fairytale about Sleeping Beauty, the young girl who was cursed during her baptism by the evil Maleficent to die on her 16th birthday, but who's curse was converted to a 100 year long sleep. So far the stories are the same. But what happens if the prince, who's supposed to save Sleeping Beauty with a kiss, falls into the same deep sleep instead of saving her? Is the long sleep full of dreams and if so, what happens in that dream world or is it completely dreamless?

This is another side of the story about Sleeping Beauty that consists of lies, magic and a fighting spirit, but also about finding yourself.

My opinion of the book: I have a weak spot for Disney in generel, so I'm more than happy to read various Disney fairytales, but mostly those with a twist. As with "As Old as Time" the same author has stuck to the basic parts of the fairytale but written it from another angle. Is Maleficent really evil? Why does Aurora not have any memories of her parents and why are everyone forbidden from leaving the castle? 

A ok book with a twist, that I however perceived as a bit weak. It wasn't as good as the book about the Beauty & the Beast, but I still liked that the author isn't writing about the classic weak female characters in need of rescue, because that's been overused, is boring and one-sided. The characters are multifaceted and believable, which hightens the reading experience alot. But as mentioned, I found the story a bit tardy. Not much really happened and I think the ending was a bit bland. I had expected a bit more to be honest. But over all it's an ok book.
