Handling: Sophie och Lil jobbar i Sinclairs varuhus där de rika handlar allt från leksaker, mat och parfym till kläder, hattar och smink. De lyckades nyligen lösa ett mysterium med en försvunnen klocka i form av en sparv och stoppa maffiabossen "The Baron" från sin lömska planer. Livet har sedan dess blivit lite bättre för dem båda och det mesta flyter på.
En dag blir Sophie kontaktad av en ung adelskvinna vars brosch, i form av en mal med juveler på, har försvunnit. Det var en gåva från en högt uppsatt person och adelskvinnan vill inte riskera att denna pinsamhet kommer ut till allmänheten. Sophie och Lil tar på sig fallet tillsammans med sina vänner Billy och Joe.
Till saken hör också att ingen har sett hur The Baron ser ut, förutom Sophie och en vacker dag står hon öga mot öga mot honom igen. Hur ska hon kunna lösa mysteriet med broschen utan att hamna i klorna på The Baron igen?

Min åsikt om boken: Jag läste första boken för ett bra tag sen och minns tyvärr inte så mycket annat än att jag tyckte om den. Men trots minnesförlusten gick det bra att läsa den här boken och den var faktiskt svår att lägga ifrån sig! Jag vet inte riktigt vad det är, men blandningen av två unga kvinnliga detektiver i 1900-talets London tilltalar mig. Det är baler, fina middagar och kläder men också slum, fattigdom och misogyni. Men, på ett väldigt lättsmält sätt. Detta är ändå en bok för barn mellan 9-12 år, så den är inte på nåt sätt brutal utan väldigt spännande och genomtänkt. Jag visste inte alls var handlingen var på väg, så jag blev överraskad ett par gånger!

Story: Sophie and Lil works in the Sinclair's shopping mall where the rich buys anything from toys, food and perfume to clothes, hats and make up. They recently managed to solve the mystery with a missing clockwork sparrow and stop the mob boss "The Baron" from his insidious plans. Life has been a bit better for them both since then.
One day Sophie is contacted by a young woman of nobel birth who's brooch, in the shape of a moth with jewels, has gone missing. It was a gift from a high-ranking person and the woman doesn't want this embarressment to get out in public. Sophie and Lil takes on the case together with their friends Billy and Joe.
No one has ever seen what the Baron looks like, except for Sophie and one day she's face to face with him again. How will she solve the mystery with the brooch without ending up in the hand of the Baron again?

My opinion of the book: I read the first book a good while ago and don't remember much other than I really liked it. Despite the memory loss the reading went well with this book and it was actually really hard to put down! I don't know what it is, but the mix of two young female detectives in London during the 1900's really speaks to me. There are balls, fancy dinners and clothes but also slum, poverty and misogyni. But, in a light way considering this is a book for kids between 9-12 years old, so it's not brutal in any way, just very suspenseful and well thought through. I had no idea where the story was going so I was surprised a couple of times!

Handling: Jack Glennison är en f.d. soldat och poliskonstapel som nu arbetar som privatdetektiv i Manchester, England under 1920-talet. En dag kommer en glamorös kvinna till Jacks kontor och vill ha hjälp att hitta sin försvunna make. Jack är säker på att fallet är lätt löst, så han tar sig an det och rester till den något udda ön Darkisle, för att leta efter den försvunna mannen. Medan han följer spåren av mannen är det samtidigt något helt annat som pågår i bakgrunden. Mysteriska saker händer och Jack dras allt längre in i en historia om hämnd, hemliga sällskap och mörk magi. För att sätta stopp för att fler mord begås måste Jack hitta den skyldige.


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är ett recensionsexemplar, jag tackar författaren så mycket för det! 🙏
Jag tycker att det här var en väldigt välskriven debutbok utan krusiduller. Handlingen går rakt på utan onödiga twistar och detaljer, vilket uppskattas. Jack Glennison kändes som en väldigt sympatisk och bra person, så honom gillade jag väldigt snabbt. Man tror först att handlingen ska vara rätt förutsägbar men ganska snart inser man att så inte är fallet. Jag visste inte alls vad som skulle hända, trots att jag först trodde det. Boken var underhållande och intressant att läsa, speciellt vad gällde de mystiska/magiska delarna. Jag hade dock önskat att det fanns mer av just det, det mystiska. Jag håller inte riktigt med om att det är en skräckbok heller, det saknas lite för många element för det. Jag skulle snarare kalla den för en thriller, även om det är på gränsen. Det dominerande inslaget är just den försvunna mannen och det hemliga sällskapet som Jack försöker spåra, så det är ju lite mer åt detektivhållet. Men boken var väldigt bra. Jag tyckte om den!

Story: Jack Glennison is an ex soldier and constable working as a private detective in Manchester, England during the 1920's. One day a glamorous women enters Jack's office and want his help in finding her missing husband. Jack is convinced the case will be easily solved so he agrees to take it on and travels to the weird island Darkisle to look for the missing man. While he follows the leads of the man there's something else going on in the background. Mysterious things are happening and Jack is slowly drawn into a story about revenge, secret societies and dark magic. To put and end to more murders happening Jack must find the guilty one.

My opinion about the book: This is a review copy I got from the author, thank you for that!🙏
I think this is a very well written debute book with no frills. The plot is straight on without unnecessary twists and details, which I appreciate. Jack Glennison felt like a very sympathetic and good person, so I liked him right away. You first think the plot is fairly predictable but pretty soon you realise that's not the case. I had no idea what was going to happen, even if I first thought so. The book was entertaining and interesting to read, especially the mysterious/magical parts. I would have wished there were more of that though. I don't really agree with it being a horror book either, there's not enough elements of that in the book. I'd rather call it a thriller, even if it's just on the border. The dominante parts are the missing man and the secret society that Jack is tracking, so it's more towards detective/mystery. But the book was great. I liked it!
Regarding grade, I'd give it a strong 3½ to a weak 4 of 5 💀

Jag fick en förfrågan om jag ville ta emot recensionsex och jag brukar sällan nej, om det inte gäller nåt väldigt ointressant för min del (typ deckare). Det är ju Halloweentider så lite skräck eller mysterium passar ju verkligen bra att läsa nu. Jag hoppas den är spännande!

Gillar ni att läsa skräck och har ni i så fall tips på en bra skräckbok?

I got a request about a review copy and I rarely say no, unless it's something that I really dislike (like Crime). It's soon Halloween so a bit horror or mystery is really fitting to read right not. I hope it will be suspenseful to read!

Handling: Elspeth Reeves bor i London men hon har nyligen förlorat både sitt jobb och sin pojkvän, så hon åker till sin mamma och barndomshem i Wilsby-under-Wychwood. Elspeth hinner knappt komma fram innan ett fasansfullt brott upptäcks i den närliggande skogen Wychwood. En kvinna har blivit ritualistisk mördad på ett väldigt speciellt sätt och Elspeth känner igen det från bilderna i en av hennes gamla böcker som avhandlade en lokal myt om "the Carrion King", en saxisk magiker som sas hålla ett hov ute i Wychwoodskogen och hämnades på de som sårat honom. Fler mord begås och Elspeth befinner sig snart mitt i utredningen tillsammans med sin gamla barndomskompis Peter Shaw, som är polis.


Min åsikt om boken: Detta var en salig blandning till bok. På ytan är den som vilken deckare som helst, men den innehåller en del magi och fantasy också. Det är lite tvetydigt om morden har begåtts på "vanliga" sätt eller med hjälp av magi. Ingen vet riktigt vad de ska tro och det är svårt att förklara hur vissa har dött. Boken var väldigt lättläst och trots att den egentligen inte riktigt är i min smak så tyckte jag ändå att den gick bra att läsa. Allt flöt på bra och höll en lagom takt utan att det blev tråkigt. Å andra sidan blev det kanske inte heller jättespännande, men jag stundtals ville jag inte sluta läsa. En helt ok bok med andra ord.

Story: Elspeth Reeves lives in London but she recently lost both her job and boyfriend, so she travels to her mom and childhood home in Wilsby-under-Wychwood. Elspeth barely reaches her mom's house before a heinous crime is discovered in the nearby woods of Wychwood. A woman has been ritualisticly murdered in a very special way and Elspeth recognise it from the pictures in one of her books about a local myth about "the Carrion King", a saxon magician that was said to have held a court in Wychwood and retaliated against those who hurt him. More murders are commited and Elspeth is soon in the middle of the investigation together with her old childhood friend Peter Shaw who's a police officer.

My opinion of the book: This was a very mixed book. On the surface it seems to be like any other crime novel but it also has some magic and fantasy parts. It's a bit equivocal if the murders has been commited in the "usual" way or with the help of magic. No one really knows what to believe and has a bit of a hard time to explain how some of them died. The book is very easily read and even though it's generally not my taste I actually thought it was very good to read. It had a good pace and the plot went on smoothly without it getting boring. On the other hand it wasn't really suspenseful either, but I had moments when I didn't want to stop reading. The book was okey with other words. Not bad, just not more than alright.

The Last Chance Hotel

Handling: Seth är en ung kille som är kökspojke på The Last Chance Hotel som ägs av familjen Bunn. Familjen behandlar Seth rätt dåligt och han drömmer om att bli kock någon annanstans där ingen tvingar honom att diska, skala potatisar eller tar åt sig äran för rätterna han lagar eller bakar.
Hans mamma dog när han var barn och pappa försvann, så Seth är helt ensam kvar. Men som tur är har han katten Nightshade som han tycker mycket om.

En dag kommer ett fint sällskap till det ödsliga hotellet ute i vildmarken. Det verkar som att de ska ha någon typ av prövning eller test och ingen utomstående får veta vad som pågår. Seth ser till att göra både maten och desserterna till gästerna, även om Tiffany Bunn snor åt sig all ära. Mitt i allt detta faller en av gästerna ner död och det verkar inte bättre än att Seth måste vara den skyldige. Men han vet att det inte är sant. Nu måste han se till att bevisa sin oskuld, men hur gör man det när ingen tror på en och om magi dessutom är inblandat?


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är tydligen första delen i en serie, men jag är osäker på hur många delar det finns eller ska bli. Jag vet bara att bok 2 finns ute. Jag tyckte boken var sådär. Jag tyckte inte att man riktigt fick världen förklarad för en eller hur saker och ting fungerade. Sen kände jag också att boken upprepade sig rätt mycket. Någon spänning kände jag inte heller av. Det ska ju föreställa ett mordmysterie där de ska lösa vem den riktiga mördaren är och varför, men allt kändes rätt blaha. Kände inte heller att jag fick något band till huvudkaraktären Seth eller hans historia. Så nja, skulle säga att boken är ok, men knappt. Får se om jag läser nästa bok eller ej.

Story: Seth is a young kitchen boy at The Last Chance Hotel that is owned by the Bunn family, who doesn't treat Seth well and he's dreaming of become a chef somewhere no one is forcing him to do the dishes, peal potatoes or taking credit for the dishes he makes. His mother died when he was a child and his dead disappeared, so Seth is all alone. But fortunately he's got the cat Nightshade, that he cares for alot.

One day a fancy group of people arrives at the desolate hotel in the middle of nowhere. It seems like they're having some kind of trial/examination and no outsider is allowed to know what's happening. Seth is making both the dinner and the desserts for the guests, even though Tiffany Bunn takes all the credit for it. In the middle of the dinner one of the guests drops dead and it looks like Seth is the guilty one. But he knows it's not true. Now he must prove his innocence but how do you do that when no one believes you and when magic is also involved?

My opinion of the book: This is the first book in a series, but I'm not sure how many parts it's supposed to be. I only know that part 2 is out. I think the book was alright. I think that you didn't get to know how the world worked or what it looked like. I also felt like the book was pretty repetitive. No suspension was present at all. It's supposed to be a murder mystery where they're trying to work out who did it and why, but it felt pretty bland. I also don't think I got a connection with the main character Seth or his history. So, I guess I'd say the book was ok, but barely. Don't know if I'll read the next book or not.
