Handling: Rosie Strange ärver ett häxmuseum ute i Essex efter sin farfar, som hon knappt haft kontakt med och hon beger sig dit för att kolla in stället och se om det går att sälja. Hennes plan är verkligen inte att behålla museet och hålla det öppet. Rosie hinner dock knappt sätta sin fot på museet förrän hon dras in i en galen jakt på gamla, borttappade ben tillsammans med museets utställningskurator Sam Stone. Benen tillhörde Ursula Cadence, en ökänd häxa som hängdes på 1500-talet. Det är bråttom att få tag på benen, då en liten pojke verkar ha blivit besatt av ett spöke som levde på Ursulas tid och riskerar att dö.

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var en något udda bok med en salig blandning av spöken, besatthet, häxor, magi och detektivarbete. Den var lättläst och handlingen flöt på bra men jag tyckte inte att den var så himla spännande direkt. Ibland kändes den lite tjatig och som att man inte riktigt fick chansen att lära känna karaktärerna på djupet för det var så mycket annat som hände hela tiden. Det var som att handlingen skrapade lite på ytan samtidigt som den innehöll bitar från alla möjliga håll som alla skulle samsas om utrymmet. Jag hade nog velat ha lite mer ordning och struktur, en sak i taget. Detta är ju dock en serie upptäckte jag, så det är möjligt att de lösa ändarna knyts ihop i de kommande böckerna, men jag gillar inte lösa ändar. Det känns som att berättelsen kommer bitvis lite här och där, som att man får pussla ihop det efterhand, om man minns nåt men också som att bitarna kommer från olika håll, så man vet inte vad som är upp eller ner.
Boken var ok, som sagt. Inte en höjdare men inte heller dålig. I betyg får den 3.5 av 5💀

Story: Rosie Strange inherits a witch museum in Essex after her grandfather, that she hasn't hardly had any contact with and she goes there to check the place out and see if it's sellable. Her plan is not to hold on to it and keep it opened. Rosie scarcely has the time to put a foot in the museum before she's drawn into a crazy chase for some old, discarded bones together with the museum curator Sam Stone. The bones used to belong to Ursula Cadence, a infamous witch that was hanged in the 1500's. Time is short because a small boy seems to have become possessed by a spirit from Ursula's time and is at risk of dying.

My opinion about the book: This was a somewhat odd book to read because it had a mix of ghosts, possession, witches, magic and detective work. It was easily read and the plot went on smoothly, but I didn't find it particularly suspenseful. At time it felt repetitive and like you never got the chance to know the characters at depth because it was so much going on all the time. It was like the plot just scratched on the surface but at the same time it gave you bits and pieces of different things from every direction and everything had supposed to compress into the same space. I would have liked more order and structure, one thing at a time. I discovered that this is a series, so it's possible that the lose ends will be knitted together in the upcoming books, but I don't like lose ends. It felt like the story came in pieces here and there, like you had to piece them together afterwards, if you remember it but also that the pieces came from all over the place, so you didn't know what was up or down.
The book was alright. Not great but not bad either. I'd give it 3.5 of 5💀

Handling: Sophie och Lil jobbar i Sinclairs varuhus där de rika handlar allt från leksaker, mat och parfym till kläder, hattar och smink. De lyckades nyligen lösa ett mysterium med en försvunnen klocka i form av en sparv och stoppa maffiabossen "The Baron" från sin lömska planer. Livet har sedan dess blivit lite bättre för dem båda och det mesta flyter på.
En dag blir Sophie kontaktad av en ung adelskvinna vars brosch, i form av en mal med juveler på, har försvunnit. Det var en gåva från en högt uppsatt person och adelskvinnan vill inte riskera att denna pinsamhet kommer ut till allmänheten. Sophie och Lil tar på sig fallet tillsammans med sina vänner Billy och Joe.
Till saken hör också att ingen har sett hur The Baron ser ut, förutom Sophie och en vacker dag står hon öga mot öga mot honom igen. Hur ska hon kunna lösa mysteriet med broschen utan att hamna i klorna på The Baron igen?

Min åsikt om boken: Jag läste första boken för ett bra tag sen och minns tyvärr inte så mycket annat än att jag tyckte om den. Men trots minnesförlusten gick det bra att läsa den här boken och den var faktiskt svår att lägga ifrån sig! Jag vet inte riktigt vad det är, men blandningen av två unga kvinnliga detektiver i 1900-talets London tilltalar mig. Det är baler, fina middagar och kläder men också slum, fattigdom och misogyni. Men, på ett väldigt lättsmält sätt. Detta är ändå en bok för barn mellan 9-12 år, så den är inte på nåt sätt brutal utan väldigt spännande och genomtänkt. Jag visste inte alls var handlingen var på väg, så jag blev överraskad ett par gånger!

Story: Sophie and Lil works in the Sinclair's shopping mall where the rich buys anything from toys, food and perfume to clothes, hats and make up. They recently managed to solve the mystery with a missing clockwork sparrow and stop the mob boss "The Baron" from his insidious plans. Life has been a bit better for them both since then.
One day Sophie is contacted by a young woman of nobel birth who's brooch, in the shape of a moth with jewels, has gone missing. It was a gift from a high-ranking person and the woman doesn't want this embarressment to get out in public. Sophie and Lil takes on the case together with their friends Billy and Joe.
No one has ever seen what the Baron looks like, except for Sophie and one day she's face to face with him again. How will she solve the mystery with the brooch without ending up in the hand of the Baron again?

My opinion of the book: I read the first book a good while ago and don't remember much other than I really liked it. Despite the memory loss the reading went well with this book and it was actually really hard to put down! I don't know what it is, but the mix of two young female detectives in London during the 1900's really speaks to me. There are balls, fancy dinners and clothes but also slum, poverty and misogyni. But, in a light way considering this is a book for kids between 9-12 years old, so it's not brutal in any way, just very suspenseful and well thought through. I had no idea where the story was going so I was surprised a couple of times!

The Resurrectionist of Caligo.

Handling: Roger Weathersby är en "vetenskapsman" som stjäl nyligen begravda lik på kyrkogårdar runt om i staden Caligo och försöker under tiden skola sig till kirurg. Han lever i de smutsiga och fattiga kvarteren av Caligo och är inte rädd för att be folk köra upp saker där solen inte skiner. Han tror inte på sagor eller magi, för han kysste en prinsessa en gång och allt det gav honom var problem. Han är dock van vid det hårda livet och fortsätter sno lik från kyrkogårdarna för att skrapa ihop lite pengar, men en dag blir han felaktigt anklagad för att vara en mördare och satt i fängelse. Han hotas att få en snara kring halsen och det finns bara ett sätt att klara livhanken på, vilket dock kräver kunglig blodsmagi och en bindande ritual som löper hela vägen fram till döden.

Prinsessan Sibylla är på plats nummer 6 i successionsordningen till tronen och har nyss varit i exil. Drottningen har svårt för Sibyllas sätt att bete sig och straffade henne med exil för att prinsessan inte ville gifta sig med sin kusin. Nu är Sibylla dock tillbaka och försöker gömma undan sin halvbroder (magiska barn utanför äktenskapet och kungafamiljen är förbjudet) innan drottningen upptäcker det. Men samtidigt härjar en galen mördare i staden och hennes gamla vän Roger kan vara den enda som kan hjälpa henne att lösa mysteriet. Det kräver dock att de kan lägga både sina känslor och sitt förflutna åt sidan...


Min åsikt om boken: När man läser baksidetexten på boken så tror man att det ska handla om ett mordmysterium och att man ska få följa med de två huvudkaraktärerna på vägen till lösningen, men riktigt så var det visst inte. Ungefär två tredjedelar av boken hinner försvinna innan mordmysteriet börjar nystas upp och då är det inte ens de två huvudkaraktärerna som gör det ihop, utan var för sig fast med två olika delar av lösningen. Det kändes ju lite... snopet med tanke på vad som står på baksidan. Resten av boken gick åt till att berätta om karaktärernas liv och bakgrund, inte alls att lösa mord. Så jag blev lite förvirrad där faktiskt. Jag väntade ju på att de skulle ge sig ut och leta efter mördaren, men det kom i princip aldrig.

Boken i sig är inte dålig för det, men den handlar inte riktigt om det man tror. Snarare om hur staden/landet Caligo (också lite förvirrande om det är två olika saker med samma namn eller om staden ÄR ett land) fungerar och hur det styrs samt var kungafamiljen kommer ifrån och fick sina magiska krafter ifrån. Den handlar också om hur fattigdom kan se ut och påverka människa när det gäller t.ex. vård eller hemlöshet. Handlingen utspelar sig under den viktorianska eran och är sådär klassiskt mörk och ruggig med dimmiga och sotiga gator, överdådiga banketter och baler osv. En helt ok bok som kunde ha varit bättre med mer fokus på mordmysteriet.

Story: Roger Weathersby is a "man of science" that steals freshly buried corpses from cemeteries in the city of Caligo and aspires to become a surgeon. He lives in the filthy and poor neighbourhoods of the city and isn't afraid to tell people to stick stuff up where the sun don't shine. He doesn't believe in fairytales or magic, because he kissed a princess once and all it gave him was trouble. He's used to the harsh side of life and continues to snatch corpses to get some coins, but one day he's framed for murder and put in prison. He's treathen to hang and there's only one way to get out of it alive, which involves royal blood magic and a binding ritual for life.

Princess Sibylla is sixth in line to the throne and was recently in exile. The queen doesn't really tolerate Sibylla's behavior and punished her with exile because Sibylla wouldn't marry her cousin. Now that the princess is back she's trying to hide her half brother (magical children out of wedlock and the royal family is forbidden) before the queen discovers him. At the same time a mad murderer is ravaging the city and her old friend Roger could be the only one that can help her solve the mystery, but that requires them to put their feelings and past aside...


My opinion of the book: When you read the summary on the back of the book you might think it's about a murder mystery and that you'll get to follow the two main characters on their way to the solution but no, not really. Approximately two thirds of the book goes by before the mystery is unraveling and it's not even the two main characters that gets it done together, but in seperate ways with two different pieces of the solution. It felt a bit... baffling considering the summary on the back. The rest of the book is about the characters lives and backgrounds, not murder solving at all. So I was a bit confused there actually. I was waiting for them to head out and go looking for the killer, but that basically never happened.

The book in itself is not bad because of that, but it's not about what you think it is. Rather about how the city/country of Caligo (a bit confusing if they're two different things with the same name or if the city IS a country) functions and where the royal family comes from along with their magical powers. It also deals with poverty and how that affects people when it comes to health care or homelessness. The plot takes place during the victorian era and it's classically dark and gruesome with foggy and filthy streets, fancy banquets and balls and so on. An alright book that could have been better with more focus on the murder mystery.

Wychwood

Handling: Elspeth Reeves bor i London men hon har nyligen förlorat både sitt jobb och sin pojkvän, så hon åker till sin mamma och barndomshem i Wilsby-under-Wychwood. Elspeth hinner knappt komma fram innan ett fasansfullt brott upptäcks i den närliggande skogen Wychwood. En kvinna har blivit ritualistisk mördad på ett väldigt speciellt sätt och Elspeth känner igen det från bilderna i en av hennes gamla böcker som avhandlade en lokal myt om "the Carrion King", en saxisk magiker som sas hålla ett hov ute i Wychwoodskogen och hämnades på de som sårat honom. Fler mord begås och Elspeth befinner sig snart mitt i utredningen tillsammans med sin gamla barndomskompis Peter Shaw, som är polis.


Min åsikt om boken: Detta var en salig blandning till bok. På ytan är den som vilken deckare som helst, men den innehåller en del magi och fantasy också. Det är lite tvetydigt om morden har begåtts på "vanliga" sätt eller med hjälp av magi. Ingen vet riktigt vad de ska tro och det är svårt att förklara hur vissa har dött. Boken var väldigt lättläst och trots att den egentligen inte riktigt är i min smak så tyckte jag ändå att den gick bra att läsa. Allt flöt på bra och höll en lagom takt utan att det blev tråkigt. Å andra sidan blev det kanske inte heller jättespännande, men jag stundtals ville jag inte sluta läsa. En helt ok bok med andra ord.

Story: Elspeth Reeves lives in London but she recently lost both her job and boyfriend, so she travels to her mom and childhood home in Wilsby-under-Wychwood. Elspeth barely reaches her mom's house before a heinous crime is discovered in the nearby woods of Wychwood. A woman has been ritualisticly murdered in a very special way and Elspeth recognise it from the pictures in one of her books about a local myth about "the Carrion King", a saxon magician that was said to have held a court in Wychwood and retaliated against those who hurt him. More murders are commited and Elspeth is soon in the middle of the investigation together with her old childhood friend Peter Shaw who's a police officer.

My opinion of the book: This was a very mixed book. On the surface it seems to be like any other crime novel but it also has some magic and fantasy parts. It's a bit equivocal if the murders has been commited in the "usual" way or with the help of magic. No one really knows what to believe and has a bit of a hard time to explain how some of them died. The book is very easily read and even though it's generally not my taste I actually thought it was very good to read. It had a good pace and the plot went on smoothly without it getting boring. On the other hand it wasn't really suspenseful either, but I had moments when I didn't want to stop reading. The book was okey with other words. Not bad, just not more than alright.

Böljelek

Handling: Kyrkoherde Simon Eldfeldt blir inkallad av Karlshamns styrande för att hantera och lösa en serie mord som verkar underliga. Varje kropp som hittas har talet 13 i pannan, så det är omöjligt att inte se kopplingen, men vad betyder det och vem är det som mördar sig igenom staden?
Samtidigt gör sig Karlshamn redo för att ta emot kung Oscar II och då passar det sig inte att ha både lik och en galen mördare som dräller omkring. Tillsammans med svåger Jönsson jobbar sig kyrkoherden fram med hjälp av vittnesmål och ledtrådar för att lösa denna gåta.


Min åsikt om boken: Jag är ju som sagt inget fan av deckare överlag, men mysterier och historiska romaner är helt min grej, så den här boken passade väldigt bra! Den är lättläst och dynamisk utan att för den delen bli för snårig. Det är många lösa trådar som verkar spreta åt alla håll, men sakta men säkert knyts allt ihop och jag tycker slutet blev väldigt bra. Jag kunde inte förutsäga hur det skulle gå eller vem mördaren var och det är ju så man vill ha det! Karaktärerna var alla intressanta på sitt sätt och skickligt gestaltade. Man kunde lätt sympatisera med vardera karaktär, oavsett hur eller vem de var. Boken är inte så lång och eftersom kapitlen är korta går det snabbt att läsa boken.
Om jag har förstått saken rätt är detta första boken i en serie och jag ser fram emot att läsa nästa bok!

Title: To be honest, I don't know what the title means. I think it's a name of an art work/fountain.

Story: The vicar Simon Eldfeldt is called in by the rulers of Karlshamn to deal with and solve a series of murders that seems to be a bit odd. Each body found has had the numbers 13 on their foreheads, so it's not impossible to see the connection but what does it mean and who is murdering his/her way through the city?
At the same time is the city of Karlsahamn getting ready to greet king Oscar II and it's not good enough to have both bodies and a crazy killer roaming around. Together with his brother-in-law Jönsson the vicar is trying to solve the mystery with the help of witnesses and different clues.

My opinion of the book: I'm not a fan of crime books in general but mysteries and historical books are right up mig alley, so this book was a good fit! It's very easy to read and dynamic without it getting too messy. There were many loose ends that seems to sprawl all over, but inch by inch it's all knitted together and I think the ending was really good. I couldn't foresee what was about to happen or who the murderer was and that's exactly what you want! The characters were all interesting in their own way and finely fashioned. You could easily sympathize with each character regardless of how or who they were. The book is not long and the chapters were short so it's a fast read!
If I've understood it correctly this is the first book in a series and I really look forward to read the next book!

The Grand Man - A Scandinavian Thriller

Handling: Juliet Brown är en jazzjournalist som också råkar vara en riktig Skandinaviennörd. Hon älskar allt som har med Skandinavien att göra! Juliet får chansen att resa till Sverige för att intervjua kända jazzmusiker och hon kunde inte vara mer glad.
Men på hennes resa mördas en av hennes vänner i Gamla stan och på mordplatsen träffar hon Magnus Lindblom, som är en svensk journalist och en stor Palmenörd.

Resan som skulle bli en härlig upplevelse blir istället väldigt omvälvande med sorg, svek, falskhet  och kaos men också vänskap och kärlek. Och en nypa mysterium, för vad har allt detta att göra med mordet på statsministern Olof Palme, ett av de mest kända morden i Sveriges historia, som fortfarande är olöst? Släng också in en nypa Stieg Larsson också i denna deckarkompott så får du en väldigt spännande bok att läsa!


Min åsikt om boken: Jag var först skeptisk till denna bok, då jag har ca 0,01% intresse av deckare överlag men när Florence frågade om jag kunde tänka mig att recensera boken, tänkte jag att ibland får man ju faktiskt vidga sina vyer och utmana skallen. Jag är faktiskt glad att jag gjorde det, för jag blev glatt överraskad! Jag tyckte boken var intressant, spännande och lite mysig på nåt sätt. Jag blev också glatt överraskad av Florences sätt att beskriva svenskar och vår mentalitet på, för jag tänkte först att det kan bli väldigt platt och liksom klyschigt på ett sätt. Rent generellt beskriver man ju svenskar som typ långa, blonda med blåa ögon med en förkärlek till lösa förbindelser och att vara nakna i princip och det känner jag är en extremt förenklad bild av en hel nation. Men, Florence lyckades fånga det väldigt bra. Det märktes inte att det var en amerikan som hade skrivit boken, utan det kändes som en person som bott i Sverige under en väldigt lång tid!

Jag gillade också twisten i boken. Jag såg den verkligen aldrig men jag gillade idén med hur mordet på Palme gick till och varför. Rätt häftigt! En bra bok som jag tror att andra deckarfan kan gilla, så tycker definitivt att man ska ge den en chans! Tack så jättemycket för att jag fick läsa din bok, Florence! 👐

Story: Juliet Brown is a jazz journalist but also a true fan of Scandinavia. She loves everything that has to do with Scandinavia! Juliet gets the chance to go to Sweden to interview famous jazz musicians and she couldn't be more happy.
But on her trip one of her friends is murdered in Gamla stan and at the murder scene she meets Magnus Lindblom, a swedish journalist and a huge Olof Palme nerd (swedish primeminister who was murdered 1986).

The trip was supposed to be a lovely experience but in reality it becomes cataclysmic with sorrow, betrayals, falsehood and chaos but also friendship and love. And a pinch of mystery, because how does all this connect to the murder of Olof Palme, one of the most famous murders in the history of Sweden, that's still unsolved? Also, throw a pinch of Stieg Larsson in this crime mixture and you have a thrilling book in your hands!

My opinion of the book: I was first sceptical towards this book because I have like 0,01% interest in crime books over all but when Florence asked me if I wanted to review this book, I thought that sometimes you have to broaden your horizons and challenge your head. I'm actually happy that I did that, because I was pleasently suprised! I thought the book was interesting, suspenseful and a bit cosy in a way. I was also pleasently surprised by Florence's way of describing swedes and our mentaltity, because I first thought that it could fall really flat and cliché in a way. Swedes are generally described as tall, blond with blue eyes with a fondness for loose connections and being nude and I feel like that is a very simplified view of a whole nation. But Florence managed to capture it very well. It was never obvious that an american (or a foreigner) wrote the book, it actually felt more like a person that had been living in Sweden for a very long time!

I also liked the twist in the book. I never saw it coming but I really liked the idea of how the murder of Palme happened and why. Really cool! A good book that I think other crime fans would like, so I can really recommend it! Thank you so much, Florence, for letting me read your book! 👐
