Handling: Efter att ha besegrat den onda drottningen i det magiska riket Witches Borough ska Mup, hennes föräldrar, lillebror och hund lämna människornas värld och flytta in i den förra drottningens slott. Efter en lång tid av förtryck och lidande vågar inte folken i den magiska världen slappna av och inse att deras onda härskare är borta och i slottets väggar lever minnena kvar.
Strax efter att Mup har flyttat in ser hon en konstig flicka smyga runt på borggården i närheten av en mörk tunnel samtidigt som konstiga teckningar dyker upp på slottsväggarna och påverkar alla i dess närhet. Snart har Mup inget annat val än att gå ner i tunneln och försöka lösa mysteriet med både flickan och teckningarna som förvrider människors sinnen. Det är början på en läskig kamp mot ilska, lidande och långdragna minnen.

Min åsikt om boken: Jag läste första boken ("Begone the raggedy witches") för ganska länge sen så jag minns inte jättemycket annat än att jag tyckte den var intressant och spännande. Jag kommer dock inte ihåg att den var speciellt mörk, så jag blev lite förvånad när jag läste uppföljaren. Spökflickan (eventuellt ännu en spoiler så läs på egen risk!) förkroppsligar på nåt sätt den onda drottningens tidigare offer och har liksom sugit i sig alla deras känslor, vilket har förvridit hennes sinne. Allt hon vet och kan är lidande, ilska och hämnd i princip. Handlingen kändes också lite svagare, så som uppföljare kan vara ibland. Men jag minns å andra sidan inte första boken tillräckligt mycket för att göra en djupare bedömning om just det.
Boken var dock intressant, handlingen flöt på bra och det händer spännande saker nästan hela tiden. Det finns fortfarande en del lösa trådar som behöver knytas ihop men jag antar att det kommer i den tredje boken. En helt ok uppföljare faktiskt. Den får 3 av 5💀 i betyg.

Story: After defeating the evil queen in the magical kingdom of Witches Borough, Mup, her parentes, little brother and dog are leaving the human world to move into the former queen's castle. After a long time of oppression and suggering the people of the magical world don't dare to relax and realise that their evil ruler is gone and in the castle walls the memories still lives.
Soon after Mup's move she sees a strange girl sneaking around in the courtyard close to a dark tunnel at the same time as weird drawings appear on the castle walls and affects everyone close to them.
Mup doesn't really have any other choice than to go down the tunnel and solve the mystery with both the girl and the drawings that influences people's minds. It's the start of a scary struggle against anger, suffering and long lived memories.

My opinion about the book: I read the first book ("Begone the raggedy witches") a long time ago so I don't remember much other than I thought it was interesting and fun to read. I don't remember it being especially dark, so I was a bit surprised when I read the sequel. The ghost girl (might contain yet another spoiler so read at your own risk!) somehow embodies the evil queen's victims and has liked sucked in all their feelins, which distorted her mind. All she knows is suffering, anger and revenge essentially. The plot feels a bit weak, like sequels can be sometimes. But I don't remember the first book enough however to make a judgement in depth regarding that.
The book is interesting, the plot had a nice pace and suspenseful things happened almost all the time. There are some lose ends that needs to be knitted together but I guess that will happen in the third book. An okey sequel. I give it 3 out of 5💀.

Livet har sedan dess blivit lite bättre för dem båda och det mesta flyter på.
En dag blir Sophie kontaktad av en ung adelskvinna vars brosch, i form av en mal med juveler på, har försvunnit. Det var en gåva från en högt uppsatt person och adelskvinnan vill inte riskera att denna pinsamhet kommer ut till allmänheten. Sophie och Lil tar på sig fallet tillsammans med sina vänner Billy och Joe.
Till saken hör också att ingen har sett hur The Baron ser ut, förutom Sophie och en vacker dag står hon öga mot öga mot honom igen. Hur ska hon kunna lösa mysteriet med broschen utan att hamna i klorna på The Baron igen?

Min åsikt om boken: Jag läste första boken för ett bra tag sen och minns tyvärr inte så mycket annat än att jag tyckte om den. Men trots minnesförlusten gick det bra att läsa den här boken och den var faktiskt svår att lägga ifrån sig! Jag vet inte riktigt vad det är, men blandningen av två unga kvinnliga detektiver i 1900-talets London tilltalar mig. Det är baler, fina middagar och kläder men också slum, fattigdom och misogyni. Men, på ett väldigt lättsmält sätt. Detta är ändå en bok för barn mellan 9-12 år, så den är inte på nåt sätt brutal utan väldigt spännande och genomtänkt. Jag visste inte alls var handlingen var på väg, så jag blev överraskad ett par gånger!

They recently managed to solve the mystery with a missing clockwork sparrow and stop the mob boss "The Baron" from his insidious plans. Life has been a bit better for them both since then.
One day Sophie is contacted by a young woman of nobel birth who's brooch, in the shape of a moth with jewels, has gone missing. It was a gift from a high-ranking person and the woman doesn't want this embarressment to get out in public. Sophie and Lil takes on the case together with their friends Billy and Joe.
No one has ever seen what the Baron looks like, except for Sophie and one day she's face to face with him again. How will she solve the mystery with the brooch without ending up in the hand of the Baron again?

My opinion of the book: I read the first book a good while ago and don't remember much other than I really liked it. Despite the memory loss the reading went well with this book and it was actually really hard to put down! I don't know what it is, but the mix of two young female detectives in London during the 1900's really speaks to me. There are balls, fancy dinners and clothes but also slum, poverty and misogyni. But, in a light way considering this is a book for kids between 9-12 years old, so it's not brutal in any way, just very suspenseful and well thought through. I had no idea where the story was going so I was surprised a couple of times!

Handling: Detta är en faktabok om 6 olika kvinnliga egyptiska drottningar/faraoner; Mernieth under den första dynastin (3000-2890 f.Kr), Neferusobek av dynasti 12 (1991-1802 f.Kr), Hatshepsut och Nefertiti av dynasti 18 (1550-1295 f.Kr), Tawosret av dynasti 19 (1292-1189 f.Kr) och Cleopatra VII av den Ptolemeiska dynastin (305-30 f.Kr).
Det forntida egyptiska statssystemet var väldigt patriarkaliskt och det enda sättet för en kvinna att regera var om hon var den sista i sin familj eller om den nya kungen var för ung. Annars hade en kvinna inget på tronen att göra. Men ändå lyckades minst 6 kvinnor få/ta makten i ett av dåtidens största riken. Hur gick det till och hur kringgick de de patriarkala strukturerna?
Detta är berättelsen om 6 kvinnors väg till makten mot alla odds!

Min åsikt om boken: Åh, den här boken är så himla bra, spännande och en riktig ögonöppnare. Jag älskar forntiden, mytologier och liknande, så Egypten är lite av ett nördämne för min del. Här hemma kollar vi på många program om arkeologiska utgrävningar i Egypten och liknande, så jag fullkomligt slukade boken.
Det märks tydligt att författaren är arkeolog, då boken är väl efterforskad och hon håller sig hela tiden till fakta, vilket jag tycker är oerhört viktigt vad gäller faktaböcker. Det är tyvärr inte självklart att det är så, men författaren är väldigt noggrann med att peka ut vad som är fakta och vad som är spekulationer/misstankar. Det märks också att författaren håller i genusstudier på universitet för boken har en helt annan synvinkel än vad man är van vid. Generellt är de flesta faktaböcker skrivna av män, speciellt inom historia och där har man sällan tänkt på varför kvinnor hade den roll de hade eller varför de sällan hade någon makt. Så den här boken var verkligen en frisk fläkt. Jag har lärt mig så mycket nytt och spännande om Egypten (t.ex om människooffer av adliga vid en kungs död under första dynastin, incest inte bara mellan syskon, utan även föräldrar och barn...) samtidigt som faktan inte har varit för mycket. Man har inte behövt ha stenkoll på årtal och liknande som det annars kan vara, utan författaren har lagt krutet på kvinnornas berättelser eller vad som finns bevisat. Jag kan inte hylla den här boken nog så mycket. Otroligt bra, välskriven, spännande och fantastisk!
Den får lätt 5 av 5💀 i betyg.

Story: This is a non fictional book about 6 different female egyptian queens/pharoes; Merneith during the first dynasty (300-2890 BCE), Neferusobek of dynasti 12 (1991-1802 BCE), Hatshepsut and Nefertiti of dynasti 18 (1550-1295 BCE), Tawosret of dynasti 19 (1292-1189 BCE) and Cleopatra VII of the Ptolomaic dynasti (305-30 BCE).
The ancient egyptian state system was very patriarchial and the only way for a woman to rule was if she was the last of her family or if the new king was too young. Otherwise a woman had nothing to do on the throne. Yet at least 6 women got to the top and ruled one of the ancient world's biggest kingdoms. How did that happen and how did they circumvent the patriarchial structures?
This is the story of 6 womens' way to the power against all odds!

My opinion about the book: Oh man, this book is so good, exciting and a real eye opener! I love ancient times, mythologies and such, so Egypt is a bit of a nerd thing for me. We watch a lot of shows about archeological excevations and so on, so I pretty much just devoured the book. It's very clear and obvious that the author is an archeologist, because the book is well researched and anchored to facts, which I think is very important when it comes to non fiction. It's unfortunately not an obvious rule for all non fictional writers, but this author is very careful about pointing out what's facts and what are speculations/suspicions. It's also very clear that the author is teaching gender studies at the university because the book as another viewpoint than what I'm used to. Most non fiction books are generally written by men, especially when it comes to history and people often don't think about the roll women had or why they rarely ever had any power. So this book is like a fresh breeze. I've learned so much new and exciting things about Egypt (like human sacrifices of nobles when the kings died during the first dynasty or that incest was not just between siblings but also parents and children....) and at the same time the facts haven't been too much. It was never required of me to keep track of all the years, places or names like it usually is, because the author put her focus on the story of these women or what the evidence show. I can't praise this book enough! So good, well written, exciting and amazin!
I will easily give it 5 of 5 💀.

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

Jag har inte så jättemycket att berätta då jag haft lite annat för mig, men jag har fått hem två nya böcker (och ett nytt husdjur!). Robinson Crusoe vann jag på omnible och Borne köpte maken till mig när han var inne i Göteborg. När jag köpte material till mina julkort (gör kort för hand varje år) så fick jag med gratismaterial, bland annat bokmärken! Nu har jag en hel bunt jag kan använda.

Angående husdjuret så adopterade vi en tokaygecko som behövde ett nytt hem. Han hade varit på rymmen 1 år och därför inte fått i sig tillräckligt med kalcium, så han har inte kunnat växa ordentligt. Svansen är sned och han är mindre i storlek än han ska vara, men annars är han frisk och kry. Jag har alltid velat ha en tokay, även om de är aggressiva och skäller (hanar). Men jag ska inte ha honom som en knähund ändå, så det gör ju inget, haha. Så länge han inte biter av mig ett finger är jag glad.

Har ni några husdjur eller djur ni skulle vilja ha?

I don't have a lot to report, because I've had other things to deal with but I recently got two new books (and a new pet!). I won Robinson Crusoe in one of Omnible's giveaways and Le husband bought Borne as a gift to me when he was in Gothenburg. When I bought material for my christmas cards (I always make the cards by hand each year) I also got some free stuff, among them bookmarks! So I have a bunch now that I can use.

Regarding the pet. We adopted a tokay gecko that needed a new home. He had been on the run for a year and therefore not gotten enough calcium, so he hasn't been growing properly. His tail is crooked and he's in a smaller size than he should be, but other than that he's healthy. I have always wanted a tokay, even though they are aggressive and bark (males). But I'm not gonna use him as a lap dog anyway, so it doesn't matter, haha. As long as he doesn't bite off a finger I'm happy.

Handling: Goldie, Bea, Scarlet och Liyana har alla något gemensamt - de är nämligen systrar utan att veta om det. De har alla olika mödrar men föddes på samma dag och när de växte upp kunde de besöka en konstig plats i sina drömmar. Det var där de möttes för första gången. Men så fort de fyller 13 år kan de inte längre återvända förrän på sin 18 årsdag då de kommer få möta sin pappa och slåss för sina liv. Under de 5 åren då de inte kan återvända till drömlandet börjar minnena sakta försvinna och snart har de glömt allt, både systrar och sina egna magiska krafter.
Samtidigt kan pojkar från 13-årsåldern börja besöka drömlandet och träna på att bli soldater. Deras enda uppgift är att döda "Grimmflickor", annars dör de. Tiden börjar rinna ut för systrarna, de måste snabbt återfå sina minnen och krafter innan det är för sent.

Min åsikt om boken: Jag är lite kluven till vad jag egentligen tyckte om boken. Å ena sidan tyckte om författarens språk, för det var väldigt målande och nästan poetiskt. Men å andra sidan tyckte jag det var rätt störigt att hoppa mellan 5 olika personer i varje kapitel, det förstörde läsflödet en del. Hade nog hellre föredragit att varje kapitel handlade om 1-2 personer istället för flera stycken.
Berättelsen i sig var ganska originell och intressant men samtidigt kändes vissa andra element rätt onödiga, de tillförde inte så mycket. Så ja, svårt att säga om boken var bra eller dålig. Den är lite mittemellan. Den var inte tråkig men den var inte häpnadsväckande heller.
Den får 3 av 5💀 i betyg.

Story: Goldie, Bea, Scarlet and Liyana all have something in common - they are sisters without knowin it. They all have different mothers but were born on the same day and growing up they used to visit a strange place in their dreams. That's also where they first met. But as soon as they turn 13 years of age they can no longer return, until their 18th birthday and that's when they'll meet their father and fight for their lives. During the 5 years they cant visit the dream place the memories slowly begins to fade and soon they've forgotten everything, both their sisters and their own magical powers.
At the same time there are boys who can begin visting the dream place once they've turned 13 and train to become soldiers. Their only purpose is to kill "Grimm girls" or they die. Time is running out for the sisters, they need to regain their memories and powers before it's too late.

My opinion of the book: I am a bit uncertain about what I think of this book. On one hand I really liked the author's storytelling, it was very vivid and almost poetic. On the other hand I thought it was annoying to jump between 5 people in each chapter, it disrupted the flow of reading. I had prefered if each chapter was about 1-2 people instead of multiple characters.
The story itself is pretty original and interesting but at the same time it felt like some elements were pretty unnecessary, they didn't bring much to the story. So yeah, it's hard to say if the book was good or bad. It's somewhere in between. It's not boring but not spectacular either.
I give it 3 out of 5💀.

Min åsikt om boken: Jag tyckte mycket om den första novellantologin "Våreld" och det var även min första upplevelse med en samling noveller. Jag hade ganska höga förväntningar på den här boken, speciellt eftersom ämnet är så intressant, hur människor tolkar dystopier. Majoriteten av novellerna var riktigt bra och intressanta, men jag upplevde inte att kvalitén var lika bra den här gången. Det var några jag inte riktigt förstod mig på men boken är inte dålig. Mina favoriter var "Förlorad" av Sara Dalengren, "Känslostympad" av Emelie Beijer och "Den vita ryttaren" av Caroline Hurtig.
I betyg skulle jag ge den 3.5 av 5💀

Title: This book doesn't have an english but the translation would be something like "Autumn glow".

Story: This is an anthology with 14 novelles with the same theme from Seraf Förlag. It's the end of the world and people are doing their best to survive. New technology can either make it or break it. Come along into a world where pandemics, climate change and new ways to rule is normal.

My opinion of the book: I really liked the first anthology "Våreld" (Spring fire) and that was also my first experience with novellas. I had pretty high expectations on this book, especially since the subject is so interesting, how people interpret dysopias. The majority of the novellas were really good and interesting, but I didn't feel like the quality was as good as the last time. There were some of them that I didn't understand but the book isn't bad at all. My favorites were "Förlorad" (Lost) by Sara Dalengren, "Känslostympad" (Emotionally mutilated) by Emelie Beijer and "Den vita ryttaren" (The white rider) by Caroline Hurtig.
I'd give this book 3.5 of 5 💀

Jack är säker på att fallet är lätt löst, så han tar sig an det och rester till den något udda ön Darkisle, för att leta efter den försvunna mannen. Medan han följer spåren av mannen är det samtidigt något helt annat som pågår i bakgrunden. Mysteriska saker händer och Jack dras allt längre in i en historia om hämnd, hemliga sällskap och mörk magi. För att sätta stopp för att fler mord begås måste Jack hitta den skyldige.


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är ett recensionsexemplar, jag tackar författaren så mycket för det! 🙏
Jag tycker att det här var en väldigt välskriven debutbok utan krusiduller. Handlingen går rakt på utan onödiga twistar och detaljer, vilket uppskattas. Jack Glennison kändes som en väldigt sympatisk och bra person, så honom gillade jag väldigt snabbt. Man tror först att handlingen ska vara rätt förutsägbar men ganska snart inser man att så inte är fallet. Jag visste inte alls vad som skulle hända, trots att jag först trodde det. Boken var underhållande och intressant att läsa, speciellt vad gällde de mystiska/magiska delarna. Jag hade dock önskat att det fanns mer av just det, det mystiska. Jag håller inte riktigt med om att det är en skräckbok heller, det saknas lite för många element för det. Jag skulle snarare kalla den för en thriller, även om det är på gränsen. Det dominerande inslaget är just den försvunna mannen och det hemliga sällskapet som Jack försöker spåra, så det är ju lite mer åt detektivhållet. Men boken var väldigt bra. Jag tyckte om den!

Jack is convinced the case will be easily solved so he agrees to take it on and travels to the weird island Darkisle to look for the missing man. While he follows the leads of the man there's something else going on in the background. Mysterious things are happening and Jack is slowly drawn into a story about revenge, secret societies and dark magic. To put and end to more murders happening Jack must find the guilty one.

I think this is a very well written debute book with no frills. The plot is straight on without unnecessary twists and details, which I appreciate. Jack Glennison felt like a very sympathetic and good person, so I liked him right away. You first think the plot is fairly predictable but pretty soon you realise that's not the case. I had no idea what was going to happen, even if I first thought so. The book was entertaining and interesting to read, especially the mysterious/magical parts. I would have wished there were more of that though. I don't really agree with it being a horror book either, there's not enough elements of that in the book. I'd rather call it a thriller, even if it's just on the border. The dominante parts are the missing man and the secret society that Jack is tracking, so it's more towards detective/mystery. But the book was great. I liked it!
Regarding grade, I'd give it a strong 3½ to a weak 4 of 5 💀

Handling: I den ödsliga lilla byn Tupik bor de två ungdomar Yehuda Leib och Bluma. Yehuda kallas för "oäkting" av folket i byn på grund av att han inte har någon pappa. Han råkar alltid hamna i trubbel, men det är aldrig hans fel, enligt honom själv i alla fall. Bluma är dotter till byns bagare och tycker om att vara i närheten av sin vresiga farmor, som för det mesta håller sig för sig själv uppe i sitt vindsrum.

Det går ett mummel genom byn om en man vid namn Avimelekh. Yehuda har hört namnet tidigare men så fort någon märker att Yehuda är i närheten blir de tysta. En vacker dag är den mystiske Avimelekh åter i närheten och Yehudas mamma säger åt sin son att fly, han får absolut inte hamna i händerna på denne Avimelekh. Han kidnappar pojkar och tvingar in dem i armén, det är i alla fall vad man säger. 

Överallt finns demoner, enligt både alla i byn och den judiska folktron. Yehuda måste fly via skogen och där möter han en mörkervarelse som tar något kärt ifrån Yehuda. Han gör allt han kan för att få tillbaka det, vilket leder honom in i en helt annan värld. Samtidigt har Bluma mött samma varelse och råkat ta ett viktigt instrument, som nu vägrar lämna hennes person. Utan att ungdomarna vet om det har de bådat hamnat på den andra sidan, bland demoner, döda soldater och bortgångna släktingar. Den andra sidan är en farlig plats för levande människor, så det är bråttom få dem över till rätt sida, men hur?

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var en speciell bok med en blandning av judisk folktro, fantasy och mystik. Jag tyckte initialt att handlingen var väldigt spännande och underhållande, men ju närmare slutet jag kom desto mer virrigt tyckte jag att det blev. Det var väldigt mycket flängande hit och dit och orsaken till det var inte helt uppenbar. I böcker med riktigt genomtänkta handlingar man kan ju ändå förstå varför det blir som det blir, men jag lyckades aldrig riktigt förstå det här. Boken var dock fortfarande bra, men den kunde ha varit bättre. Det var vissa saker med Bluma och "instrumentet" som jag inte heller riktigt förstod. Med risk för eventuella spoilers, så kan jag bara kort nämna att jag inte förstod hur eller varför hon blev "Den namnlösa flickan". Vad hade egentligen instrumentet för syfte? Det var aldrig riktigt tydligt utan man fick gissa lite. Jag tycker judisk folktro är väldigt intressant, mytologifantatiker som jag är, men jag hade behövt ha en mer tydlig röd tråd för att verkligen få en koppling till handlingen. Så ja, boken kunde definitivt ha varit bättre eller så förstod jag mig inte på den.

Jag brukar ju inte använda mig av betyg, men jag har ändå funderat på det eftersom det är sorts hjälp för att verkligen visa vad man tycker om en bok, så nu kommer jag ändå införa det, haha.

Story: In the deserted little village of Tupik lives the to young people Yehuda Leib and Bluma. Yehuda is called a "bastard" by the people in the village because he doesn't have a father. He always end up in trouble, but it's never his fault according to himself. Bluma is the daughter of the village baker and likes to be close to her grumpy grandmother, who mostly keep to herself in her room in the attic.

There's talk in the village about a man called Avimelekh. Yehuda has heard the name before but as soon as anyone notices that Yehuda is around they go silent. One day the mysterious Avimelek is close by and Yehuda's mother tells her son to flee, he must not get caught by Avimelekh. He kidnaps boys and forces them into the army, that's what people say at least.

Everywhere there are demons according to both the people in the village and the jewish folklore. Yehuda must flee into the woods and there he meets a dark creature, that takes something dear from Yehuda. He does whatever he can to get it back, which leads him into another world. At the same time Bluma has met the same creature and accidently got hold of an important instrument, that now wont leave her alone. Without the youths knowledge they've both ended up in the same place, The Other side, among demons, dead soldiers and deceased relatives. The Other side is no place for living humans, so they must get out of there quickly, but how?


My opinion about the book: This is a special book with a mix of jewish folklore, fantasy and mystique. I initially thought the plot was very suspenseful and entertaining but the closer I got to the end the more confused it all got. There was a lot of dashing about and the reason for it was not that clear. In books with a well-thought-out plot you can understand why things happen, but I never really understood that in this book. The book was still good though, but it could have been much better. There were some things with Bluma and the "instrument" that I didn't quite get. With the risk of potential spoilers I'll just briefly mention that I didn't understand how or why she became "The Nameless Girl". What was the purpose of the instrument? That was never really clear, so you had to guess a little.
As the mythology nerd I am, I think jewish folklore is very interesting but I would have needed a more obvious red thread to really get a connection to the plot. So yeah, it could definitely have been better or I never really understood it.

I usually don't use a grading system, but I've been thinking about it since it can be helpful for me to really show what I think about a book, so I'm going to use it from now on.

Alla lästa böcker i oktober/ All the books I read in October.

Jag vet inte riktigt vad som hände i oktober men jag läste en hel del böcker, fler än vanligt faktiskt. Normalt brukar det bli runt 5-6 böcker/månad men tydligen fick jag ihop 8 st förra månaden! Ändå var det några tjockare böcker så jag vet inte om jag har läst fort som tusan eller bara inte orkat göra nåt annat? Hur som, en bra läsmånad helt enkelt.
Den bästa i högen måste nog ändå vara "Dunkelstjärnan", även om "Kättarna" ligger högt i topp.

Hur går läsningen för er?

I don't know what happened in October but I managed to read quite a lot, more than usual actually. Normally I read 5-6 books/months but apparently I read 8 books last month! Some of them were pretty thick so I don't know if I read fast as hell or if I didn't have the energy to do anything else? Anyway, a good reading month!
The best one in the pile must be "Dunkelstjärnan", even though "Kättarna" is in the top as well.
