Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

När jag hade läst klart "Rött Uppror" gick jag direkt till Akademibokhandeln och köpte hem resterande böcker i trilogin. Dessutom köpte jag även första boken på nästa trilogi i samma universum. Så bra tyckte jag att "Rött Uppror" var. Eftersom Akademibokhandeln hade ett erbjudande på 4 för 3 så köpte jag även en bok av Philippa Gregory. Jag har läst flera av hennes böcker tidigare och har tyckt mycket om dem (om jag nu inte blandar ihop henne med nån annan vill säga), så chansade på ännu en bok.

Lite kort om böckerna:

Tidvatten handlar om England under 1600-talet. Det är inbördeskrig mellan kung Karl I och det rebelliska parlamentet. Konflikten sträcker sig till de mest avlägsna delarna av landet, ända till tidvattenområdena i söder.
Alinor kommer från en lång rad av läkekvinnor. I ett sista försök att bryta sig loss från sin våldsamme make står hon en natt under fullmånen på en kyrkogård och väntar på en vålnad som ska uttala orden som befriar henne. Men istället möter hon James, en ung man på rymmen och visar honom vägen genom tidvattenområdets förrädiska landskap. Bortom allt förnuft faller de handlöst för varandra.
I en tid av oro och vidskepelse skapar Alinors kunskaper om läkekonst och örter misstanke hos befolkningen i den lilla byn och hennes skönhet och ambition väcker avund. Snart tar rädslan och avundsjukan över och byborna bestämmer sig för att ta saken i egna händer.

De andra böckerna om Darrow och hans kamp för frihet tänker jag faktiskt inte skriva nåt om, för det är lite spoilervarning på dem. Jag vill egentligen inte ens själv läsa vad som står på baksidan och har man inte läst "Rött Uppror" tidigare men kanske vill göra det, så vill jag definitivt inte spoila nåt.

When I finished reading "Red Rising" I went straight to Akademibokhandeln and bought the other two books in that triology. I also bought the first book in the next triology taking place in the same universe. That's how good I thought "Red Rising" was. Since Akademibokhandeln had an offer of 4 books for 3 I also bought a book by Philippa Gregory. I've read many of her previous books and liked  them (unless I've confused her with someone else) so I took a chance on yet another of her books.

A little about the books:

Tidelands is about England during the 1600's. There's civil war between king Charles I and the rebellious Parliment. The conflict reaches even the most remote parts of the country, all the way to the tidelands of the south.
Alinor comes from a long line of wise women. In a last try to break free of her abusive husband she stands under the fullmoon in a graveyard and waits for a ghost to declare her free. But instead she meets James, a young man on the run and shows him the way through the tidelands' treacherous landscape. Beyond all reason they fall for each other. In a time of unrest and superstition Alinor's knowledge of healing and herbs makes the village people suspicious and her beauty and ambition arouses envy. Soon the fear and jealousy takes over and the villagers decides to take matters into their own hands.

I wont write anything more about the other books of Darrow and his fight for freedom, because it's a bit of a spoiler alert on them. I really don't want to read the text on the back myself and if you haven't read "Red Rising" yet but want to, then I could spoil something and I don't want to!

The Shape of Darkness

Handling: Agnes är en silhuettartist i den viktorianska staden Bath. Trots att fotografin har skapat sensation försöker Agnes hålla sitt företag vid liv samtidigt som hon försörjer sig själv, sin gamla mamma och sin föräldralösa systerson. Plötsligt börjar de få kunder hon har att dö och det verkar som att någon är ute efter att förstöra för Agnes, men vem och varför?
Till slut tar Agnes kontakt med ett barnmedium vid namn Pearl i hopp om att de döda kan ge ledtrådar. Snart upptäcker de båda att inget är som det verkar och att de kanske har öppnat dörrar som borde ha förblivit stängda...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag gillar Laura Purcells böcker väldigt mycket. Karaktärerna känns så levande och handlingen är alltid väldigt spännande. Dessutom gillar jag att hennes huvudkaraktärer oftast är kvinnor i en tid då kvinnor inte hade så mycket att säga till om. Det jag dock inte får en känsla av är det där läskiga eller skrämmande. Jag har sett flera recensioner där läsaren har tyckte att hennes böcker har varit lite läskiga med en krypande känsla av fasa. Det har jag aldrig uppfattat. Jag tycker inte hennes böcker är speciellt skrämmande eller fasliga. Men det är också därför jag sällan läser skräck, för jag blir aldrig skrämd eller får någon känsla av fasa. Jag är nog lite naiv och tar allt för vad det är utan närmare eftertanke.
Hur som, slutet av boken var lite för öppet för min smak. Det kunde tolkas på flera olika sätt och det gillar inte jag. Jag vill ha ett tydligt slut som inte kan tolkas på nåt mer sätt än "så här var det". Annars känns det lite meningslöst om man ska behöva tolka det. Men det är ju en smaksak så klart. Jag hade mina misstankar i början av boken angående vem eller vad som tog död på folk, men så kom en twist mot slutet och ihop med det öppna slutet blev det än värre att försöka förstå sig på vad som verkligen hade hänt. Men överlag var handlingen väldigt bra och spännande. Det hade ett bra tempo som höll ens intresse vid liv hela vägen och jag tyckte verkligen om både Pearl och Agnes. Även doktorn Simon kändes sympatisk. En mycket bra och läsvärd bok!

Story: Agnes is a silhouette artist in the victorian city Bath. Although photography has made a sensation Anges tries to keep her business afloat since she supports not only herself but her elderly mother and orphaned nephew. But all of a sudden the few customers she has begins to die and it seems like someone is out to ruin Agnes, but who and why?
Agnes approaches Pearl, a child medium, in the hopes of getting clues from the dead. But soon they both realises that nothing is as it seems and that they might have opened doors that should have been kept closed...

My opinion about the book: I like Laura Purcell's books a lot. The characters feels so alive and the plot is always so exciting. I also like that her main characters most often are women in a time when women didn't have a lot to say about anything. What I don't get is a sense of dread or horror. I've seen several reviews where the reader has thought her books were creepy of had a lingering feel of dread. I've never felt or thought that. But that's also why I hardlu ever read horror, because I don't get frightened or get any sense of dread. I think I might be a little naïve and just accept things without any thought.
Anyway, the ending was a bit too open for my taste. It could be interpreted in a lot of different ways and I don't like it. I want a clear cut ending that can't be interpreted in any other way than "this is what happened". Otherwise if feels a bit pointless when you can make it out to be this or that. But it's a matter of taste of course. I has my suspicions in the beginning regarind who or that killed people, but then there was a twist towards the end and together with the end it just made it so much harder to understand what really happened. But over all the plot was very good and suspenseful. It had a good flow that kept a hold of your interest all the way and I really liked both Pearl and Agnes. Also the doctor Simon felt very sympathetic. A very good book worth a read!

Diktatorn/Dictator

Handling: Cicero lever i exil och måste hela tiden röra sig från plats till plats, då hans fiender jagar honom. Han måste lämna Italien helt och tillsammans med Tiro försöker han överleva så gott det går. Samtidigt har Cicero inte tappat hoppet om att återkomma till både Rom och senaten, så han kämpar vidare. Triumviratet bestående av Caesar, Crassus och Pompejus håller på att bryta samman och det verkar som att Cicero är den enda som ser vad som kan ske i slutändan...

Min åsikt om boken: Nu var det ett par dagar sedan jag läste klart boken, så mina upplevelser är lite vaga men hade ingen tid till att recensera innan jag drog iväg på en liten semesterresa. Hur som helst, Cicero blir lite knäpp under sin exil men ger ändå inte upp om att återgå till sitt gamla liv. Han avskyr verkligen Caesar men när de övriga i triumviratet har gått ur tiden och Caesar har gjort sig till en diktator, måste Cicero krypa till korset och be om nåd. Så länge han inte lägger sig i politiken får han fortsätta som vanligt. Men att hålla sig från politiken är som att ta en fisk ur vatten, så Cicero bryter snart det löftet. Han känns lite gammal och gaggig nu men också ganska självgod, lite som att han är den enda som kan rädda landet. Istället för att kanske pensionera sig och ägna sig åt att skriva böcker så måste han hålla sig vid maktens centrum och det är också därför det slutar som det gör för honom. Det är också därför hans familj slits isär men Cicero verkar antingen inte förstå det eller så bryr han sig inte. Det verkar som att han prioriterar landet före allt annat, förutom sig själv.
Jag tyckte den här boken var lite svagare än de två tidigare, den kändes lite hattig i handlingen men den var inte dålig för det. Tiro är fortfarande en favorit, han är så lojal och ödmjuk så man kan inte göra annat än att gilla honom. Överlag var det här en bra trilogi och jag tyckte att berättelsen om Ciceros liv var väldigt spännande. Är man intresserad av intriger och historia ska man definitivt läsa de här böckerna!

Story: Cicero is in exile and must move around from place to place because his enemies har hunting him. He must leave Italy entirely and together with Tiro he tries to survive as well as he can. At the same time Cicero hopes he still can return to both Rome and the senate so he fights on. The Triumvirate consisting of Caesar, Crassus and Pompey is on the brink of ruin and it seems like Cicero is theonly one who sees what it could lead to in the end...

My opinion about the book: I finished this book a couple of days ago so my thoughts are a bit vague but I didn't have any time to review it before I went on a small vacation. Anyway, Cicero goes a bit nuts during his exile but still think he can return to his old life. He really hates Caesar but since the other ones in the triumvirate is gone and Caesar has made himself a dictator, Cicero must crawl back to him and beg for mercy. As long as he doesn't involve himself in the politics he can live as he used to but to keep Cicero out of politics is like keeping a fish out of water, so he soon breaks that promise. He feels a bit old and senile but also a but complacent, like he's the only one who can save the country. Instead of retiring and write his books he just have to be around the centre of power and that's also why it ends the way it does. That's also why his family is torn a part but it seems like Cicero doesn't get it or doesn't care. It seems like he prioritizes the country above all else, except himself.
I thought the book was a bit weaker than the previous two, it felt a bit repetitive, it was a lot of back and forth, but the book wasn't bad because of that. Tiro is still a favorite, he's so loyal and humble, you just can't do anything other than like him. Over all the triology was good and I thought the story about Cicero's life was very excisting and suspenseful. If you're interested in intrigues and history you really should read these books!

He had openly distanced himself from their criminal methods. They got their revenge by making it possible for the aristocrat Clodius to be selected to tribune. When Caesar offered to make Cicero a legate in Gaul, which would have made him immune to Clodius's attacks, he had said no. He didn't want to fall into Caesar's trap. The price he paid for his firmness of principle had been exile, poverty and grief."

Handling: Cicero är nu konsul och ordförande i senaten. Ganska snart börjar underliga saker ske i Rom och Cicero kan inte undgå att fundera på om mörka krafter är i görningen. Caesars makt växer sig allt starkare och när en sammansvärjning hotar hela staden inser Cicero att han måste göra nåt. Men han inser också att allt han gör just nu kan komma tillbaka och förstöra livet för honom längre fram...

Min åsikt om boken: Som sagt, jag gillade ju första boken så mycket att jag började läsa uppföljaren på en gång och det var helt rätt val! Bok 2 är inte mindre spännande eller sämre än första, snarare tvärtom. Det är nu som intrigerna verkligen ökar i styrka och Cicero har fullt upp med att förhindra både fusk, mord och konspirationer. Det är också nu man får se en liten förändring hos Cicero, vilket var överraskande men också på nåt sätt förväntat. Makt korrumperar och Cicero börjar nu bli lite full av sig själv. Han ser sig som hela Roms fader och räddare, han berättar för allt och alla vad han har gjort och liksom skryter om sina insatser utan att själv inse att folk börjar förlora intresset. Det känns helt rätt med tanke på att hans karriär är på topp men också lite tråkigt, med tanke på hur sympatisk han var i första boken. Men jag tycker ändå det är helt rätt att utveckla karaktären och just åt det hållet, för det är lite oväntat vad gäller just Cicero, men ändå förväntat med tanke på hur det brukar gå när någon har makt. Det intressanta är också hur det kan gå när man är principfast och står fast vid det, att man hade en chans att stoppa någon, men med olagliga medel men inte gjorde det och personen kommer efter en sen. För om den personen inte skyr några medel så sitter man lite i skiten, så att säga. 

Hur som, ännu en jättebra och spännande bok i den här trilogin! Jag tycker som sagt väldigt mycket om Tiro som karaktär, han känns så ödmjuk och snäll. De övriga karaktärerna känns också välutvecklade så till den milda grad att jag köper precis allt som görs och sägs. Hade jag inte vetat detaljerna kring Tiros anteckningar/böcker om Cicero hade jag nästan kunnat tro att de här böckerna inte var historiska romaner utan biografier, så levande känns alla karaktärer.

Story: Cicero is now consul and chairman in the senate. Pretty soon weird things happen in Rome and Cicero can't avoid pondering if dark powers are at play. Caesar's power is growing and when a conspiracy threatens the city Cicero realises he must do something. But he also realises that everything he does might just come back and destroy his life in the future...

My opinion about the book: As I said, I liked the first book so much that I picked up the sequel right away and it was the right thing to do! Book 2 is not less suspenseful or worse than the first, quite the opposite. It's not that the intrigues really grows in strength and Cicero is busy with trying to prevent both cheating, murder and conspiracies. It's also now that you see a change in Cicero, which was surprising but also expected in a way. Power corrupts and Cicero is beginning to become a bit full of himself. He sees himself as the father and saviour of Rome, he tells everyone and all times what he's done and kind of brags about his achievments, without realising that people are losing interest in him. It's feels right considering his career is at its peak but also a bit sad considering how sympathetic he was in the first book. But I also think it's correct to develop the character and take that direction, but it's a but suprising because it's Cicero, but also expected because power corrupts. It's also interesting to see what could happen when you're principled and stand by it, that you might have had a chance to stop someone but with illegal means and didn't because of principles and that person later on comes after you. Because it that person doesn't mind using legal or illegal means to get rid of you, you're in deep shit, so to speak.

Anyway, yet another great and suspenseful book in this triology! I really like Tiro as a character, because he seem so humble and kind. The other characters also seem so well developed that I buy everything they say and do. If I hadn't known what happend with Tiro's notes/books about Cicero, I could have almost believed that these books weren't historical novels but biographies, because they feel so real.

Handling: Skrivarslaven Tiro har levt länge tillsammans med Marcus Tullius Cicero och i sin ålderdom bestämmer han sig för att skriva om Ciceros liv och väg in i senaten i antika Rom. Det hela började när en skräckslagen man knackar på hos Cicero och ber om hjälp med ståthållaren över Sicilien. Om Cicero sköter sina kort väl kan det här bli vägen in i maktens centrum. Men han är inte den enda med det målet i sikte, den förmögna Crassus, den sluga Caesar och generalen Pompejus vill alla nå toppen och skyr inga medel. Det gäller att Cicero verkligen håller huvudet på skaft för att inte råka illa ut...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag måste säga att boken var bra mycket bättre än jag först förväntade mig! Jag har läst en av författarens böcker tidigare och tyckte att den var ok. Rätt seg men lite intressant ändå. Så jag hade inga höga förhoppningar när jag plocka upp denna men oj, vad fel jag hade! Handlingen flyter på i ett bra tempo och Cicero är en väldigt intressanta karaktär som aldrig slutar förvåna en. Tiro är också en mycket sympatisk och intelligent person, som faktiskt uppfann snabbskriften (stenografi) och på så sätt gjorde sig själv både oersättlig och odödlig. Han blev till slut en alltiallo och höll sig alltid vid Ciceros sida. Det jag beundrar Cicero mest är hans strävan efter makt utan en hint av korruption. Han vill definitiv förbättra sin egen ställning men är också mån om folket och det krävs en hel del för att stå emot mutor och mer makt, men det gör han. Han har sina principer och han står fast vid dem. Han spelar bara spelet när någon tvingar honom, annars försöker han röra sig runt det. Det lättaste är ju alltid att släppa efter och göra som alla andra, eftersom makt korrumperar. Jag beundrar alltid människor som står fast vid det de tror på! Cicero är också en underdog och jag är väldigt svag för såna personer. Han hade inte någon förmögenhet eller kom från en känd familj. Han fick slåss för varje liten bit, när andra kunde både köpa eller muta sig till samma ställning flera gånger om.
Handlingen är stundtals lite seg med långa monologer och miljöbeskrivningar, men de tillför ändå nånting så jag har inte så mycket emot dem, för resten är så himla spännande. Så fort jag hade läst klart den här började jag direkt på den andra boken, för jag kunde inte släppa varken Tiro eller Cicero!

Story: The secretary and slave Tiro has lived a long life with Marcus Tullius Cicero and in his old age he decides to write about the life of Cicero and his way into the senate in ancient Rome. It all started when a terrified man knocks on Cicero's door and asks for help with the governor of Sicily. If Cicero plays his cards right this could be the way into the centre of power. But he's not the only one with this goal, the wealthy Crassus, the cunning Caesar and the general Pompejus all want to reach the top and will stop at nothing to get there. Cicero must keep his wits about him to not end up in danger...

My opinion about the book: I must say that this book was a lot better than I expected! I've read one of the author's books before and thought it was alright. A bit slow but somewhat interesting. So I didn't have high expectations when I picked this book up, but I was so wrong! The story has a really good pace and Cicero is a very interesting character that never ceases to amaze me. Tiro is also a very sympathetic and intelligent person that actually invented shorthand writing (stenography) and by that made himself both irreplaceable and immortal. He eventually became the right hand man for Cicero and was always by his side.
What I admire about Cicero the most is his strive for power without a hint of corruption. He definitely wants to better his own status but also cares for the people and it takes a lot to turn your back on bribes and more power, but he does. He has his principles and he stands by them. He only playes the game when someone forces him, otherwise he tries to move around it.
It's always easier to just let go and do what everyone else does, becuase power corrupts. I always admire people that stand for what they believe in! Cicero is also an underdog and I have a soft spot for those people. He doesn't have money or come from a rich family. He must fight for every single scrap when others can both buy and bribe their way to the same position as him several times over.
The plot is at times a bit tardy with long monologues and descripions of the environment, but they still bring something of value, so I don't mind, because the rest is so darn suspenseful. As soon as I finished this book I immediately began with the second one, because I couldn't let go of Tiro or Cicero!

Handling: 12-åriga Evey och 9-åriga Dill bor tillsammans med sin mamma i 1600-talets England, som plågas av inbördeskrig och allmän misstro. En dag kommer en grupp män till gården och flickorna måste gömma sig i skogen. Männen tillfångatar deras mamma och slår ihjäl henne framför deras ögon. Evey inser att de måste fly, långt bort och de beger sig iväg för att leta upp deras moster vid "samlingsplatsen". Det enda Evey kan tänka på är hämnd och hon svär vid sin mamma att hon ska jaga männen och kräva deras liv i betalning.
Efter många om och men inser Evey att hon kanske inte är så annorlunda jämfört med sin syster och mamma. Och det hjälper henne att hämnas.

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var en väldigt udda bok. Ämnet i sig borde verkligen falla mig i smaken men av någon anledning känns handlingen själlös. Jag förstår inte riktigt syftet med det som händer och får inte heller någon direkt kontakt med karaktärerna. Man får inte mycket bakgrundsinfo heller om dem, mer än några bitar här och där. Det var också svårt att greppa om det var en historisk fantasy eller en historisk roman. Var de häxor eller bara örtkunniga? Det får man lite svar på i slutet men innan dess var det väldigt oklart. Jag tyckte att det var väldigt mycket fram och tillbaka. Den stora hämndscenen kändes väldigt antiklimatisk och jag kände mig inte engagerad för fem öre. Dock är boken lättläst och funkar om man vill ha något relativt enkelt, men den ger en inget på djupet. Jag hade velat få mer info och dels mer djup hos karaktärerna. De kändes ganska platta. Istället för att visa miljön och karaktärerna genom berättelsen fick man det sagt till sig, vilket inte känns trovärdigt. Det var inte mycket i berättelsen som tydde på att den utspelade sig under 1600-talet, förutom möjligtvis språket som är lite egendomligt ibland. Kunde ha varit bättre, men är helt ok om man vill ha nåt enklare att läsa.

Story: 12 year old Evey and 9 year old Dill lives with their mom in England during the 1600's. The land is plagued by civil war and general mistrust. One day a group of men comes to the farm and the girls must hide in the woods. The men captures their mother and kills her right in front of their eyes. Evey realises they must flee, far away and they set off to find their aunt where the "coven" meets. The only thing Evey can think of is revenge and she swears by her mother that she will hunt the men and demand their lives as payment.
At last Evey realises that she might not be so different to her mother and sister. And that will help her demand revenge.

My opinion about the book: This was an odd book. The subject itself should have been my cup of tea bit for some reason the plot felt soulless. I don't really understand the purpose of what's happening and I didn't really get any connection with the characters. You don't get a lot of background information about them either, more than some bits here and there. It was also hard to get a grip around it being historical fantasy or historical fiction. Were they witches or just healers? You got some answes in the end but before then it was very unclear. I thought it was a lot of back and forth. The big revenge scene felt very anticlimatic and I wasn't engaged at all. The book is easily read though and works if you want to read something relatively simple, but it doesn't have much depth. I would have wanted more info och more depth to the characters. They felt pretty flat. Instead of showing you the environment and characters through the story you get told what and where it is, which didn't feel credible. There weren't much in the story that indicated it taking place in the 1600's, except for maybe the language, that was a bit peculiar sometimes. It could have been better but it's alright if you want something light to read.

Men vad händer med de kvinnor och barn som blir kvar efter att staden har brunnit ner? Det här är deras historia.

Min åsikt om boken: Om man gillade Madeline Millers böcker "Circe" och "The song of Achilles" lär man gilla den här! De är skrivna på samma poetiska sätt. Språket flödar på ett vackert sätt och det är svårt att inte dras in i handlingen. Boken handlar inte om en specifik karaktär utan flera olika. T.ex. Trojas drottning Hecabe, Odysseus fru Penelope, Afrodite, Eris, Hera m.fl. Kort och gott kan man säga att det här är de grekiska klassikerna skrivna från kvinnornas synvinkel, de som aldrig har fått komma till tals och som ingen har brytt sig om. Handlingen är spännande, välskriven och känns magisk på nåt sätt. Det är nästan som att jag var där, på plats, när jag läste och jag hade svårt att lägga ifrån mig boken. Den var väldigt bra! Bättre än jag förväntade mig faktiskt.

But what happens with the women and children that are left after the city burned down? This is their story.

My opinion about the book: If you liked Madeline Miller's books "Circe" and "The song of Achilles" then you'll like this one! The storytelling has the same poetic feel to it. It just flows in a beautiful way and it's hard not to get lost in the story. The book is not about a specific character but many, like the queen of Tray Hecabe, Oddysseus' wife Penelope, Aphrodite, Eris, Hera and many more. In short you could say that this is the greek classics written from the point of view of the women, who were never listened to and no one cared about. The plot is suspenseful, well written and feels magical in some way. It was almost like I was there with the characters while I was reading and I had trouble putting the book down. It was really great! A lot better than I had expected actually.

Plötsligt befinner sig spartaner och greker i fiendeland utan ledning och det blir upp till dem själva att ta sig därifrån och rädda sina landsmän. Men perserna tänker inte bara låta dem marschera tillbaka hem oantastade...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag har en förkärlek till historiska romaner, eftersom jag är en historienörd men just den här boken var seg. Själva fokuset ligger dels på Kyros och hans arbete med att samla ihop tillräckligt många soldater och dels på vandringen till Persien men också tillbaka igen. Det händer liksom inte så mycket. Folk går väldigt mycket och får utstå vädrets makter, svält, både persiska soldater och stammar. Det kändes inte så fasligt spännande faktiskt. Jag trodde mer att det skulle handla om intriger vid det persiska hovet eller nåt helt fantastiskt slag, men icke. Kanske inte den bästa historiska händelsen att skriva en hel roman om. Karaktärerna kändes ganska platta också, man fick ingen djupare kontakt med dem eller förstod hur de tänkte/kände. Det berättades mer att så här är den personen utan att det märktes. Så inte en jättespännande bok med andra ord. Översättningen var lite knepig ibland eller så är jag inte så bevandrad inom det svenska språket, haha. Ett flertal gånger nämndes hur en grupp personer "hov upp" i ett vrål. Aldrig hört talas om det ordet och det lät jättekonstigt. Varför inte skriva "gav ifrån sig ett vrål" eller bara "vrålade"? Aja, det är såna småsaker jag kan störa mig på. Det enda som var riktigt intressant var spartanerna och deras sedvänjor, det hade jag gärna läst mer om!

Story: The persian prince Kyros is claiming the persian throne that his brother, Artaxerxes, sits on and to his help he has spartan and greek mercenaries. They are getting ready to march towards one of the biggest armies of that time but battles can be lost and princes can fall. All of a sudden the spartans and greeks are in enemy land without a leader and it's up to them to get away from there and save their fellow greeks. But the persians won't let them just marsch back home without interference...

My opinion about the book: I love historical fiction since I'm a history nerd but this book was slow. The focus was partly on Kyros and his work to acquire enough soldiers and partly on the walk to Persia but also back again. Not much is happening. People are walking long distances and have to withstand the weather, starvation, both persian soldiers and local tribes. It didn't feel that suspenseful. I thought it would be more about intrigues within the persian court or a really amazing battle, but nope. Maybe not the best historical event to write a whole novel about. The characters also felt a bit flat, you didn't get any deeper connection with them or understood how they thought/felt. It was more told that this is how this person is without it showing. So not a great book with other words. The only thing that was really interesting was the bits about the spartans and their customs, I really wanted more about that!

Handling: På den exklusiva internatskolan Montverre tränas unga män för att kunna delta i "grand jeu", en hemlig och mystisk tävling. Léo Martin var tidigare en student där men efter en tragedi förlorade han intresset för allt som hade med "grand jeu" att göra. Efter att ha begått ett misstag på sitt jobb skickas han tillbaka till skolan, men den har förändrats.

Claire Dryden är den första kvinnan på skolan som inte är tjänare. Hon är nämligen Magister Ludi och lär studenterna om "grand jeus", något som är väldigt kontroversiellt. När Léo återkommer till skolan får Claire nästan en hjärtattack. Den siste hon ville träffa är just honom.

Léo har aldrig träffat Claire innan men känner ett konstigt band till henne. Det känns som att han känner henne men hur? Deras band växer men de har byggt upp sina liv på lögner och riskerar att förlora allt om det uppdagas...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag älskade författarens bok "The Binding" och såg mycket fram emot att läsa den här. Omslaget är så himla fint också! Men det var en mycket underlig bok, minst sagt. Jag har lite svårt att sätta ord på exakt varför, men jag ska försöka. Först får man inte riktigt veta vad "grand jeu" är för nåt. Det är nåt sorts spel som innefattar matematik, musik, konst och typ... magi, antar jag? Fast ändå inte. Det är lite oklart. Eleverna skriver egna spel och får dem betygsatta. Ibland uppträder de med sina spel och ibland är de bara teoretiska. Jag hade gärna velat få veta exakt hur de här uppvisningarna/tävlingarna gick till, för jag förstod aldrig det. De skulle på nåt sätt föra människan närmare det gudomliga eller nåt, men det var väldigt abstrakt och otydligt.

Relationen mellan Claire och Léo var något tjatig. Det var samma hatkärlek gång på gång, vilket inte gjorde det hela så spännande. Jag förstod ändå att de har byggt upp murar runt sig, vilket gjorde det svårt att komma nära någon men det blev lite väl upprepande efter ett tag. Jag förstod inte heller inslaget med det politiska partiet. Vad exakt gjorde de? Vad ville de? Vad var "sedlighetslagarna" för nåt? Det var så mycket som inte förklarades ordentligt, så jag förstod aldrig riktigt syftet. Ledaren hade en katolsk bakgrund men var ändå emot kristna? Eller nåt...

Inslaget med "the Rat" förstod jag inte heller syftet med. Varför var hon ens med i boken? Hennes berättelse tillförde inte så jättemycket till handlingen i sin helhet. Boken var med andra ord något förvirrande för min del. Inte för att handlingen i sig är dålig eller konstig, utan för att det var så mycket som inte berättades och jag såg ingen tydlig röd tråd som knöt samman alltihop. Det kändes mer som flera berättelser i en som inte riktigt hade med varandra att göra. Boken är alltså inte dålig, men kunde kanske ha varit lite tydligare. Den flög lite över mitt huvud känns det som. Jag valde nedanstående citat för att visa hur spelen förklaras utan att förklaras, haha. Det här var också sista boken jag läste i april.

Story: On the exclusive boarding school Montverre young men are trained to take part in the "grand jeu", an arcane and mysterious contest. Léo Martin was a student there before but after a tragedy he lost all interest in the "grand jeu". But after making a mistake at work he's sent back to the school, but it has changed.

Claire Dryden is the first woman in the school not being a servant. She's the Magister Ludi and teaches the student about "grand jeus", something that is very controversial. When Léo comes back to the school Claire almost gets an heart attack. He's the last one she wants to meet.

Léo has never met Claire but feels some strange bond to her. It feels like he knows her, but how? Their bond grow but they've built their lives on lies and risks losing everything if it is discovered...

My opinion about the book: I loved the author's previous book "The Binding" and really looked forward to read this book. The cover is so amazing as well! But this book was a bit odd, to say the least. I have some difficulties putting it into word, but I will try. First of all you never get to know what the "grand jeu" is. It's some kind of game that is built off of math, music, art and magic... kind of, I guess? But at the same time it's not magic. It's a bit unclear. The students write their own games that are graded by the teachers. Sometimes they display their games and sometimes they're just theoretical.  I would have liked to know exactly how these displays/contests went about, because I never fully understood it. They were supposed to bring man closer to the divine or something, but it was very abstract and vague.

The relationship between Clarie and Léo was a bit repetitive. It was the same love hate thing again and again, which didn't make it all that exciting. I got that they've built walls around themselves, which makes it harder to get close to someone, but it was just very much the same thing all over after a while. I didn't understand the parts with the political party. What exactly did they do? What did they want? What was the "purity laws" (I don't remember the exact word that was used in the book, but it was something like that) about? So much that weren't explained properly, so I never got the purpose. The leader had a catholic background but was yet against christians? Or something...

The part with "the Rat" was also lost on me. Why was she even in the book? Her story didn't contribute that much to the over all story. The book was very confusing for me. Not because the story itself was bad or weird, but it was just so much that wasn't explained and I didn't see a red thread that connected it all. It felt like several stories that didn't have much to do with each other, instead of one cohesive story. The book is not bad, but could have been a bit more clear. I think it went a bit over my head. I chose the quote below to show how the games were explained without being explained, haha. This was also the last book I read in April.

Handling: På den norska ön Vardö år 1617 sker en hemsk olycka som dränker öns alla män. Kvinnorna måste klara sig själva och ta över de traditionellt manliga uppgifter, som att fiska. Detta anses dock ogudaktigt och ses inte på med blida ögon. Maren förlorade både sin bror och far i stormen och försöker hantera förlusten samtidigt som hon försöker stöttas in mamma och broderns änka. Snart börjar det viskas om att stormen inte var naturlig och att ett omen hade setts, en val som simmat upp och ner, ett tecken på magiska inslag. Samerna har länge rest till Vardö och Marens svägerska är same, vilket inte heller är riktigt accepterat. Samerna ses som Djävulens hantlangare.

Ursa är en ung kvinna och dotter till en handelsman. Hon brukar mest umgås med sin sjuka lillasyster och vårda henne så gott hon kan. Men en dag kommer pappa hem med en man och säger att Ursa ska gifta sig. Mannen är från Skottland och ska bosätta sig på Vardö. Ursa har inte så mycket att säga till om utan får helt enkelt bara följa med. Vad hon inte vet är att hennes make är en häxjägare och livet blir med ens väldigt mycket tuffare.

Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en bok baserad på verkliga händelser och författaren har tidigare skrivit "The girl of ink & stars", som jag tyckte mycket om. "The Mercies" är en relativt stillsam bok, det händer inte så fasligt mycket men den är ändå väldigt spännande. Det finns något som liksom ligger i luften hela tiden, vilket får en att fortsätta läsa. Handlingen består mestadels om kvinnors maktlöshet, utsatthet och maktlystna män. Den målar upp strukturer som fanns då och som fortfarande finns idag på ett skickligt sätt utan att det blir för mycket, eller hur man ska uttrycka det. Jag gillar Marens och Ursas vänskap och de underliggande tonerna. Jag avskydde verkligen både hennes man och länsmannen över ön. Vilka skithögar! Men då vet man att författaren har porträtterat karaktärerna på ett skickligt sätt. Hur som, vill man har en relativt stillsam men spännande bok om makt, utsatthet och djup vänskap så är det här ett tips. Jag tyckte om den!

Story: On the norweigan island Vardö in 1617 a horrible accident happens that drowns all the men. The women are left to fend for themselves and takes over the traditional male jobs, like fishing. This is seen as ungodly and is frowned upon. Maren lost both her brother and father in the storm and is trying to handle the loss along with supporting her mother and her brother's widow. Soon whispers about the storm not being natural is heard and that an omen had been seen, a whale that swam up side down, a sure sign of witchcraft. The sami people have long traveled to Vardö and Maren's sister-in-law is sami, which is not really accepted. The sami are seen as the servants of the Devil.
Ursa is a young woman and the daughter of a trader. She usually spends time with her sick little sister and cares for her as well as she can. But one day her father comes home with a man and says that Ursa is getting married. The man is from Scotland and will be settling on Vardö. Ursa doesn't get to have an opinion about it so she just does as she's told. What she doesn't know is that her husband is a witch hunter and life gets a lot harder after that.

My opinion about the book: This is a book based on true events and the author has previously written "The girl of ink & stars", which I liked very much. "The Mercies" is a pretty calm book, not much is happening but it's still pretty suspenseful. There's something lingering in the air all the time, which makes you keep reading. The plot is mostly about women being powerless, vulnerable and imperious men. It paints the structures that existed back then and that is still in action to this day, in a very skillful way without it getting too much. I like Maren's and Ursa's friendship and the underlaying tones. I really hated her husband and the Lensman of the island! What a pieces of assholes! But that's how you know the author did a great job portraiting the characters. Anywho, if you want a calm but thrilling book about power, vulnerability and deep friendship then this is a great tips. I really liked it!

Handling: I England år 1468 får Fader Fairfax i uppgift att resa till en avlägsen by och hålla i gudstjänsten på begravningen för byns präst, något han inte ser fram emot men han kan inte säga emot biskopen. Väl på plats upptäcker han att den gamla prästen har ett flertal förbjudna material i sin bostad, bland annat böcker om fornforskning och artefakter från förr som plast och glas. Vem var egentligen denna präst och vad höll han på med?
Utan att veta hur dras snart Fairfax in i mysteriet och hamnar precis lika djupt i röran som den förre prästen. Det verkar som att kyrkan inte berättar hela sanningen...

Min åsikt om boken: Idén med boken är väldigt intressant. År 1468 är nämligen inte i vår dåtid, utan i vår framtid! Jag tyckte den var en rolig och originell twist. Boken i sig var väl dock lite sisådär. Stundtals var handlingen väldigt spännande, speciellt när forntidsfynd gjordes men stundtals var den också väldigt seg. Jag upplevde att det var för mycket detaljer som inte var nödvändiga. Man behöver inte veta exakt vad karaktären äter eller hur hen klär på sig osv. Man kan hoppa över det och istället lägga krutet på viktigare saker som för handlingen framåt. Så det hade jag velat ändra på.
Annars var boken helt ok. Jag ger den en svag 3:a av 5💀 i betyg.

Detta var också den sista boken jag läste i november.

Story: In the year 1468 in England, father Fairfax has been tasked to travel to an distant village to hold the worship at the funeral for the village priest, something he doesn't look forward to but he can't say no to the bishop. When he's there he finds that the old priest has several forbidden materials in his house, among them books about prehistoric age and artefacts from antiquity like plastic and glass. Who was this priest and what was he up to?
Without knowing how Fairfax is soon drawn into the mystery and gets just as deep into the mess as the last priest. It seems like the church hasn't been telling the whole truth... 

My opinion about the book: The idea with this book is very interesting. The year 1468 is not in our past but it's our future! I thought that was a fun and original twist. The book in itself was a bit so-so. At times the plot was very suspenseful, especially regarding the prehistoric things were found and at times it was so slow. I feel like there were too many details that was not necessary. I don't have to know exactly what the character is eating or how he/she dressed him/herself and so on. It could've been skipped for more important parts that would have moved the plot further ahead. That's what I would have liked to change.
Otherwise the book was alright. I give it a weak 3 out of 5💀.

Fairfax had seen such ancient communication tools before, mostly in fragments, but never anything in such a good condition as this. It was thinner than his little finger, smaller than his hand, black and smooth and shiny, made of plastic and glass. He turned it. On the back was the ultimate symbol for the hubris and blasphemy of the prehistoric age - an apple that had a big piece missing."
