Handling: Lillai och Kisaiya är två unga "resande", som bosatta kallar för "zigernare" och en dag blir de tillfångatagna av en bojars hantlangare. De tas till bojarens borg och ska leva som slavar. De får kämpa i köket men tanken är att en av dem ska uppgraderas till en servitris och deras jobb är inte bara att servera mat, utan att "underhålla" män i sängkammaren, något ingen av systrarna är beredda på att göra.
Men en dag får bojaren besök av en underhuggare till "Draken", en fruktad man och systrarnas liv förändras för alltid...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag har tidigare läst författarens böcker "Girl of Ink & Stars" och "The Mercies", som jag tyckte mycket om. Tyvärr kände jag inte riktigt att den här boken föll mig i smaken. Den är inte nödvändigtvis dålig, utan kändes mer intetsägande. De tidigare böckerna har haft en viss atmosfär som har gjorde handlingen väldigt inlevelsefull och bidrog till ens läsupplevelse. Det tycker jag saknades här. Handlingen känns lite platt och jag saknar den där underliggande spänningen som brukar finnas. Jag gillade dock inslaget med "resande"/romer för det är inte ofta man möter det, annat än möjligtvis som bifigurer men här få de ta sig an huvudrollen. Jag gillade också att Vlad Tepes fick spela en ganska avgörande roll, men hade nog faktiskt velat att mer av handlingen hade utspelat sig där, för det var då den där spänningen äntligen dök upp. Boken i sig var ok, men inte så mycket mer än så.

Story: Lillai and Kisaiya are two young "travellers", that the Settled call "gypsies" and one day they are captured by a boyar's men. They are taken to the boyar's castle and are supposed to live as slaves. They struggle with their kitchen duties but the thought is that one of them will be upgraded to a server girl and their job is not only to serve food but to "entertain" the men in the bedchamber, something neither sister is prepared to do.
But one day the boyar is visited by an underling to the "Dragon", a feared man and the sisters' lives changes forever...

My opinion about the book: I've read "Girl of Ink & Stars" and "The Mercies" by the author previously and I liked them a lot. Unfortunately this book wasn't my cup of tea. It's not necessarily bad but it fel bland. The other books had a certain atmosphere that made the plot very empathetic and contributed to the reading experience. I felt like that was missing here. The plot felt flat and I missed the underlying suspsense that usually is there. I did however like the part with "travellers"/romani people because that is fairly uncommon, other than maybe as minor characters but here they're the main characters. I also liked that Vlad Tepes had a pretty crucial roll but I wish the plot had taken place more there, because that's when that suspense finally showed up. The book itself was alright but not much more than that.

Handling: På den norska ön Vardö år 1617 sker en hemsk olycka som dränker öns alla män. Kvinnorna måste klara sig själva och ta över de traditionellt manliga uppgifter, som att fiska. Detta anses dock ogudaktigt och ses inte på med blida ögon. Maren förlorade både sin bror och far i stormen och försöker hantera förlusten samtidigt som hon försöker stöttas in mamma och broderns änka. Snart börjar det viskas om att stormen inte var naturlig och att ett omen hade setts, en val som simmat upp och ner, ett tecken på magiska inslag. Samerna har länge rest till Vardö och Marens svägerska är same, vilket inte heller är riktigt accepterat. Samerna ses som Djävulens hantlangare.

Ursa är en ung kvinna och dotter till en handelsman. Hon brukar mest umgås med sin sjuka lillasyster och vårda henne så gott hon kan. Men en dag kommer pappa hem med en man och säger att Ursa ska gifta sig. Mannen är från Skottland och ska bosätta sig på Vardö. Ursa har inte så mycket att säga till om utan får helt enkelt bara följa med. Vad hon inte vet är att hennes make är en häxjägare och livet blir med ens väldigt mycket tuffare.

Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en bok baserad på verkliga händelser och författaren har tidigare skrivit "The girl of ink & stars", som jag tyckte mycket om. "The Mercies" är en relativt stillsam bok, det händer inte så fasligt mycket men den är ändå väldigt spännande. Det finns något som liksom ligger i luften hela tiden, vilket får en att fortsätta läsa. Handlingen består mestadels om kvinnors maktlöshet, utsatthet och maktlystna män. Den målar upp strukturer som fanns då och som fortfarande finns idag på ett skickligt sätt utan att det blir för mycket, eller hur man ska uttrycka det. Jag gillar Marens och Ursas vänskap och de underliggande tonerna. Jag avskydde verkligen både hennes man och länsmannen över ön. Vilka skithögar! Men då vet man att författaren har porträtterat karaktärerna på ett skickligt sätt. Hur som, vill man har en relativt stillsam men spännande bok om makt, utsatthet och djup vänskap så är det här ett tips. Jag tyckte om den!

Story: On the norweigan island Vardö in 1617 a horrible accident happens that drowns all the men. The women are left to fend for themselves and takes over the traditional male jobs, like fishing. This is seen as ungodly and is frowned upon. Maren lost both her brother and father in the storm and is trying to handle the loss along with supporting her mother and her brother's widow. Soon whispers about the storm not being natural is heard and that an omen had been seen, a whale that swam up side down, a sure sign of witchcraft. The sami people have long traveled to Vardö and Maren's sister-in-law is sami, which is not really accepted. The sami are seen as the servants of the Devil.
Ursa is a young woman and the daughter of a trader. She usually spends time with her sick little sister and cares for her as well as she can. But one day her father comes home with a man and says that Ursa is getting married. The man is from Scotland and will be settling on Vardö. Ursa doesn't get to have an opinion about it so she just does as she's told. What she doesn't know is that her husband is a witch hunter and life gets a lot harder after that.

My opinion about the book: This is a book based on true events and the author has previously written "The girl of ink & stars", which I liked very much. "The Mercies" is a pretty calm book, not much is happening but it's still pretty suspenseful. There's something lingering in the air all the time, which makes you keep reading. The plot is mostly about women being powerless, vulnerable and imperious men. It paints the structures that existed back then and that is still in action to this day, in a very skillful way without it getting too much. I like Maren's and Ursa's friendship and the underlaying tones. I really hated her husband and the Lensman of the island! What a pieces of assholes! But that's how you know the author did a great job portraiting the characters. Anywho, if you want a calm but thrilling book about power, vulnerability and deep friendship then this is a great tips. I really liked it!

Handling: Isabella bor på ön Joya med sin pappa. Byn de bor i består mestadels av lerhyddor och livet är ganska enkelt. Ön är uppdelad i en bebolig zon och en "förbjuden" zon. Ingen får träda över till den andra sidan om de inte har blivit förvisade av den girige och elaka guvernören Adori. Isabella råkar vara bästa vän med guvernörens dotter Lupe, som är något naiv och bortskämd men ändå väldigt snäll.

Isabella växte upp med sin pappas historia om andra länder och mytiska varelser som sägs ha funnits på ön. Ön själv sägs ha flutit fritt på havet, som en enda stor båt. Hennes pappa reste till olika länder och ritade upp kartor, men så fort guvernören kom till ön tog det stopp, något som både Isabella och hennes pappa sörjer över.

En helt vanlig dag upptäcks ett dött barn som Isabella kände från skolan. Ingen verkar vilja utreda vad som har hänt och detta gör Isabella arg. Saker och ting leder till att även Lupe försvinner och innan hon vet ordet av det är Isabella i den förbjudna zonen och letar efter henne. Där upptäcks det att alla de där myterna hon växte upp med kanske inte alls var just myter. Det kanske rent av var precis det som hände en gång i tiden och som nu håller på att upprepas...


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en relativt kort bok som man kan läsa ut väldigt snabbt om man inte har något bättre för sig. Jag tyckte boken var helt ok. Även om handlingen i sig var rätt simpel vad gäller miljön den utspelar sig i, så har författaren ändå lyckats göra handlingen spännande och intressant. Jag gillar att boken innehåller lite myter som på nåt sätt berättar mer om själva ön och dess historia, för det var lite nytänkande på nåt sätt. I alla fall för mig. Man måste liksom inte förklara allt rakt upp och ner, utan kan linda in det i en annan typ av berättelse. Hur som, boken var bra och jag tyckte handlingen var lagom spännande. Jag kunde inte alls klura ut på förhand hur det skulle gå och jag gillade idén med en bok som utspelade sig på en ö mitt ute i ingenstans. En helt ok bok!

Story: Isabella lives on the island Joya with her father. The village they live in is mostly made up of mud huts and life is pretty simple. The island is divided into the inhabited zone and the "forbidden" territories. No one is allowed to cross over to the other side unless they've been banished by the greedy and nasty governor Adori. Isabelle happens to be best friends with the governor's daughter Lupe, who's a bit naive and spoiled but still very kind.

Isabella grew up hearing her father telling her stories of other countries and mythical beings that was said to have been living on the island. The island itself was said to have been floating freely in the ocean, much like a big boat. Her father traveled to other countries and drew maps, but as soon as the governor came to the island it all stopped, something both Isabella and her father mourns.

One day a dead child is discovered, that Isabelle knew from school. No one seems to want to investigate what happened and it makes Isabelle angry. Certain things leads to the disappearance of Lupe and before she knows it Isabella is in the forbidden territories looking for her. There she discoveres that all the myths she grew up hearing about maybe weren't just myths. Maybe that's exactly what happened a long time ago and is about to happen again...

My opinion of the book: This is a relatively short book that you can easily finish in one sitting if you dont have anything better to do. I thought the book was alright. Even if the plot/story line was pretty simple, considering the environment it took place in the author managed to make the story intreresting and a bit suspenseful. I liked that the book consisted of myths that somehow told the story of the island itself and its' history, because that was something new to me. That you don't have to tell the story the usual way but could like wrap it up in another story within the story. Anyway, the book was good and I thought the story was suspenseful without being too much. I couldn't see where the story was going or get any clues to it beforehand and I liked the idea of a book that took place on an island in the middle of nowhere. A nice book!
