Månadens bok/Book of the Month

Jag har ju helt glömt av att utse "Månadens bok" i augusti och eftersom det är sista dagen av månaden fick jag ju änna skynda på lite och utse en! Den här gången valde jag en bok som jag blev påmind om på instagram (minns tyvärr inte av vem) och som jag kommer ihåg att jag gillade väldigt mycket, nämligen Nefertiti: Dödsboken av Nick Drake.

Summeringen av boken lyder så här:
"Egypten, 1300-talet före vår tideräknings början. Det mäktiga paret farao Akhenaton och drottning Nefertiti, "den Perfekta", styr landet. De har dömt ut och avskaffat de gamla gudarna, utmanat det etablerade prästerskapet och skapat en ny tro. Detta maktspel har gett dem många nya vänner, men också ondsinta fiender som inget hellre vill än att se den nya ordningen krossas.

En dag är Nefertiti, Egyptens undersköna härskarinna, spårlöst försvunnen. Brottsutredaren Rahotep blir kallad för att lösa mysteriet. Han inser snabbt att staden vilar på intriger och maktspel, och att han inte kan lita på någon. En sak är säker: lyckas han inte hitta drottningen före utsatt tid kommer han inte levande därifrån."

Detta är tydligen första delen i en trilogi, vilket jag inte hade koll på, så uppenbarligen behöver jag införskaffa de andra två böckerna också! En riktigt spännande och underhållande bok som utspelar sig i det antika Egypten.

I totally forgot to pick a book for "Book of the month" in August and since it's the last day of the month I had to hurry and pick one! This time I chose a book that I was reminded of on instagram (don't remember by whom though) and that I remembered that I liked alot, namely Nefertiti: The Book of the Dead by Nick Drake.

The book summary reads as follow:
"She is Nefertiti—beautiful and revered. With her husband, Akhenaten, she rules over Egypt, the most affluent, formidable, sophisticated empire in the ancient world. But an epic power struggle is afoot, brought on by the royal couple's inauguration of an enlightened new religion and the construction of a magnificent new capital. This is apparently the first book in a triology, which I had no idea about, so obviously I need to get my hands on the other two books aswell! A really thrilling and entertaining book that takes place in ancient Egypt.

Sky in the deep

Handling: 17-åriga Eelyn tillhör Askaklanen. Var 5:e år strider de mot den hatade Rikiklanen, därför att deras gudar Sigr och Thora är fiender. I generationer har de två klanerna möts på slagfältet och tagit död på varandra. Vid ett av dessa slag möter Eelyn sin döda broder, som en av fienderna - men hur är det möjligt?

På grund av vissa omständigheter hamnar Eelyn i en av Rikiklanens byar och måste försöka överleva vintern där och det är då broderns svek uppdagas helt och hållet. Eelyn gör allt för att försöka ta sig tillbaka till sin klan och bort ifrån de hon hatar mest. Men en natt dyker en ännu värre fiende upp och det står snart klart för dem alla att om de vill överleva måste de båda klanerna enas och slåss tillsammans mot Ondskan. Men går det att ena två klaner som haft en blodsfejd sinsemellan sedan urminnes tider?


Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken köpte jag nån gång i våras och det har tagit tid för mig att plocka upp den, av någon anledning. Jag kände väl först att den nog inte skulle vara så bra ("Varför köpte jag ens den här?") men när jag väl satte mig ner och började läsa så bara flög sidorna iväg. Jag läste ut den på lite mer än 12h, för den var så himla spännande och bra! Den är en korsning av fantasy och nordisk mytologi kan man nog säga. Den påminner väldigt mycket om vikingatiden, men med helt påhittade gudar och seder, vilket jag så klart gillar!

Boken överlag var medryckande och fängslande, karaktärerna kändes trovärdiga och var lätta att tycka om samt förstå. Tycker den var skickligt skriven och oerhört fascinerande och intressant. Helt klart ett tips, oavsett om man gillar vikingar eller ej.

Story: 17 year old Eelyn is a member of the Aska clan. Every 5 years they fight against the hated Riki cland, because their gods Sigr and Thora are enemies. For generation the two clans have met on the battlefield and killed off each other. In one of those battles Eelyn meets her dead brother, as one of the enemies - but how is that possible?

Because of some circumstances Eelyn ends up in one of the villages of the Riki clan and she must try to survive the winter there and that's also when the depth of her brother's betrayal is revealed. Eelyn does everything in her power to get back to her clan and away from those she hates the most. But one night an even bigger enemy shows up and it's soon clear to everyone that to survive the two clans must unite and fight side by side against Evil. But is it possible to unite both clans who's had a blood feud between them from time immemorial?

My opinion of the book: I bought this book sometime this spring and it has taken me time to pick it up, for some reason. I kind of felt like it wouldn't be so good ("Why did I even buy this book?") but when I sat down and began reading the book the pages just flew by. I read it in little over 12h because it was so suspenseful and good! It's a mix of fantasy and norse mythology you could say. It reminds me of the viking era, but with made up gods and manners, which I of course liked!

The book overall was very entrancing and captivating, the characters felt believable and were easy to like and understand. I think it was skillfully written and very thrilling and interesting. Definitely a tips, no matter if you like vikings or not.

Circe

Handling: Hur kommer det sig att den ena dottern av solguden Helios, Circe, lever i exil på ön Aiaia? Hon är dömd att leva där i ensamhet för all evighet, men om det är nåt Circe inte är bra på, så är det att göra det som förväntas av henne. Att hon dessutom har lyckats bemästra den förbjudna häxkonsten gör inte saken bättre.

Circe drivs av ett behov att bli accepterad och älskad, vilket gör att hon hamnar i situationer som gör mer skada än nytta. Men sent ska syndaren vakna. Circe går från en kärlekstörstande gudinna till en kraft att räkna med. Oavsett hur motarbetad man blir, kan man fortfarande krönas till segraren i slutändan, det handlar bara om ren och skär envishet.


Min åsikt om boken: Jag har hört lite blandade åsikter om den här boken. Vissa har hyllat den till skyarna medan andra har sagt att de inte alls gillade den. Jag tillhör ju den skaran av människor som är väldigt intresserad av mytologier överlag, så jag tyckte verkligen om att läsa Circe. Jag tyckte att språket var vackert på nåt sätt och hade ett fint flöde som verkligen gjorde mycket för själva läsupplevelsen. Även beskrivningarna av de olika gudarna gjorde det hela väldigt intressant. Handlingen, rent generellt, utspelar ju sig inte på så många platser egentligen, men det blir liksom inte tråkigt för det. Circe som karaktär är bara väldigt intressant och det var en upplevelse att få följa hennes tankar och känslor. Jag gillade boken väldigt mycket! Är man intresserad av mytologier överlag tror jag definitivt att den här boken kan falla en i smaken.

Story: How come that one of the daughters of the sun god Helios, Circe, is living in exile on the island of Aiaia? She's condemned to live there alone for all of eternity, but if there's something Circe is not good at, it's doing what is expected of her. That she also succeeded to master the art of witch craft doesn't help her cause either.

Circe is driven by the need to feel accepted and love, which puts her in situations that do more harm than good. But late shall the sinner awaken. Circe goes from being a love thirsty goddess to a force to be reckoned with. No matter how discouraged you might get, you can still end up the winner, it's just the matter of how stubborn you are.

 

My opinion of the book: I've heard a bit of mixed opinions about this book. Some have praised it alot while others have said they didn't like it at all. I'm one of those people who are really into mythologies over all, so I really liked reading Circe. I thought the language it was written in was really beautiful and that it had a nice flow to it that did alot for the reading experience. I also liked the descriptions of the goods, it made everything very interesting. The plot/story, in general, doesn't take place on so many different places, but I dont mind, it doesn't get boring despite that. Circe as a character is highly interesting and it was an experience to follow her thoughts and feelings. I liked this book alot! If you're interested in mythologies overallt, then I think this book will be right up your alley.

Ännu ett recensionsexemplar hittade hem förra veckan. Så roligt när de dyker upp! Jag är dock lite seg på att läsa just nu känner jag. Har hållit på med en pocketbok i säkert en vecka eller nåt och det är riktigt segt för att vara mig. Men den är snart klar, så efter den ska jag försöka beta av recensionsexemplaren.
Hur som, jag blev så glad över omslaget på den här boken, så himla snyggt och intressant! Fångar verkligen ens blick på en gång. Ska bli kul att läsa!

Yet another review copy found its' way home to me last week. I just love it when they show up! I'm a bit slow at reading now though. I've been reading this paperback book for like a week or something and that's really slow for me. But it'll soon be done so after that one I'll try to read my way through the pile of review copies.
Anywho, I was pleasently surprised by the cover of this book, so good looking and interesting! Really catches your eyes right away. I look forward to reading it!

The Twisted Tree

Handling: Martha är på rymmen. Efter hennes olycka, då hon förlorade synen på ena ögat, har inget varit sig likt. Hon vågar inte lämna sitt hem på grund av vad människor ska säga om hennes "nya" utseende och hon har också nyligen upptäckt att hon kan läsa av människor genom att röra vid deras kläder, något som har skrämt livet ur henne. Martha har skrivit brev efter brev till sin mormor som bor i Norge men inte fått något svar, så nu har hon bestämt sig för att åka dit.

När Martha kommer fram till mormors hus långt ute i ödemarken är någon hemma, men det är inte mormor... På nätterna verkar det också som att något väsen/monster är ute och härjar i skogen runt om stugan. Allt eftersom uppdagas den hemska sanningen och Martha har ett stort beslut att fatta. Ska hon axla rollen som Ödesgudinnorna har gett henne eller kommer hon att gå under?


Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken överraskade mig på många sätt. Baksidetexten säger inget om nordisk mytologi eller blodtörstande väsen som jagar folk och fä i skogarna, så när jag väl läste boken blev jag glatt överraskad! Jag blev också glad över att boken inte är sådär typiskt dålig B-skräckis utan mer åt det lite rysliga hållet. Man kan liksom känna hur skrämmande det är där ute i vildmarken när något ylar precis utanför dörren och springer runt på ens tak, utan att det blir överdrivet. Jag gillade också att boken hela tiden förde handlingen framåt och höll en jämn takt utan att det någonsin blev långtråkigt eller upprepande. Det kom nya saker hela tiden, men utan att för den delen bli förvirrande. En mycket bra och fin balansgång! Tyckte väldigt mycket om den här boken och kan verkligen tipsa er om den! Riktigt, riktigt bra faktiskt. Så läs den!

Story: Martha is on the run. After her accident, where she lost her sight in one eye, nothing's been the same. She doesn't dare to leave her home because of the fear of what other people might think about her "new! look and she has recently discovered that she can read people by touching their clothes, something that scares her alot. Martha has been writing letters to her grandmother, who lives in Norway, but without receiving any answers, so she decides to go there.

When Martha arrives at her grandmother's cabin far out on the wasteland someone's home, but it's not her grandmother... During the nights it seems like a creature/monster is out and about in the woods around the cabin. As time passes, the horrible truth is exposed and Martha has a big decision to make. Will she accept the roll the goddesses of fate has given her or will she perish?



My opinion of the book: This book suprised me in many ways. The summary doesn't mention anything about norse mythology or bloodthirsty creatures hunting people and animals in the woods, so when I read the book I was pleasently surprised! I was also glad that the book isn't typically B horror-ish. It's instead more towards being a bit creepy than frightening. You could almost feel the horror if being stuck in the wasteland with something howling outside your door and running around on your roof, without it being exaggerated. I also liked that the book kept the story going all the time in a consistent pace without it ever being boring or repetitive. The were new stuff all the time, but it never got confusing. A very nice and well thought through balancing act. I really liked this book and I recommend it to you! It was really, really good so read it!

Eufonia - Glasrösten.

Handling: Aida är en ung tjej som känner sig annorlunda, mest på grund av sitt ena öga som hon är blind på. På grund av ögats utseende vill Aida inte synas, hon undviker uppmärksamhet så mycket hon bara kan.
En dag när hon är i skolan händer något underligt. En kall vind med skuggor drar in genom salen och stjäl vissa elevers röster, så de knappt kan prata längre. Ingen verkar ha sett eller känt något förutom Aida. Hon tar sig hem till sin musiklärare och där händer också underliga saker, för plötsligt börjar personer saknas. Innan hon vet ordet av det, är Aida inblandad i en kamp mot ondskan. I landet Eufonia vill en ond typ få slut på all musik och sång, så hon stjäl både noter och röster och det blir upp till Aida att stoppa henne innan allt för sent!


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är ett recensionsexemplar som jag har fått och jag är alltid lika tacksam för varje förfrågan jag får! Alla böcker som man får chansen att läsa som man troligen aldrig hade läst annars, det är helt fantastiskt. Tack så mycket till både författaren Ann Lindh Klang och HOI förlag för det!

Jag tyckte boken var både lättläst, spännande och mysig. Handlingen var precis sådär lagom, inte för jobbig men inte för lättsam heller. Den tar ändå upp sorg, känslan av utanförskap, ensamhet men också vänskap och att det är okej att vara "udda". Jag var lite skeptisk till en bok som handlar om musik och som även hade en ordlista i början av boken, för hur bra kan det bli ungefär. Men det var inte alls några problem faktiskt. Boken är en sorts hyllning till musiken och hur viktig den är för oss människor, vilket jag tyckte var fint.

En mycket bra bok som passar yngre läsare som gillar äventyr!

Title: Eufonia - The glass voice.

Story: Aida is a young girl who feels different, mostly because of the eye she's blind in. Because of the way the eye looks Aida doesn't want to be seen, she avoids attention as much as she possibly can.

One day in school something really weird happens. A cold wind with shadows passes through the classroom and steals some students' voices, so that they can hardly speak anymore. No one seems to have seen or felt anything except for Aida. She goes home to her music teacher and more odd things happens there, because all of a sudden people go missing. Before she knows it, Aida is involved in a fight against evil. In the land of Eufonia a evil person wants stop music and singing everywhere, so she steals both music notes and voices and it will be up to Aida to stop her before it's too late!

My opinion of the book: This is a review copy that I got and I'm as grateful as always for each inquiry I get! All the books you get the chance to read that you probably wouldn't have read otherwise, that's pretty amazing. Thank you so much to both the author Ann Lindh Klang and HOI publishing for that!

I think that the book was both reasy to read, exciting and cosy. The plot was just right, not too emotionally hard but not that easy going either. It deals with mourning, the feeling of being different, lonelyness but also friendship and that it's okey to be "odd". I was a bit sceptical at first towards a book about music and that it also included a glossary in the beginning of the book, because how good can that be. But it was no problems at all. The book is kind of like a tribute to music and how important it is for us humans, which I thought was very nice.

A great book for younger readers who likes adventure!

My favorite quote from the book: Note to non swedish speakers: "Watch out/it" and "Look up" is the same word in swedish ("Se upp"), so the quote below might not make that much sense in english if you don't know that.

"Watch it!" he hissed.
"Sorry" I said, "but you're the one who suddenly braked".
"Look up, I mean it, literally", he said and stretched his head upwards.
That's when I lifted my eyes and saw it. The castle.

Sturarna - Makten, morden och missdåden

Handling: De flesta har nog hört talas om "Sturarna" eller i alla fall "Sturemorden". En svensk adelsfamilj med makt och pengar, men som drabbades utav olyckor - inte helt olikt familjen Kennedy i USA men i 1500-talets Sverige istället. Vilka var dem och hur hamnade de så nära makten under ca 200 år? Varför försvann dem och vad blev deras arv? Klanen Sture gick raka vägen från makten in i våra historieböcker. Detta är deras berättelse.


Min åsikt om boken: Jag är ju lite av en historienörd och gillar att läsa faktaböcker, men min stora svaghet är att komma ihåg namn... Jag är ofantligt dålig på det och inget blir lättare om karaktärer eller personer heter likadant, vilket de så klart gjorde på medeltiden. Varenda kotte hette Sten, Nils, Svante, Knut, Erik eller Margareta, Anna, Cecilia, Märta osv. Så att hålla koll på vem som är vem när de också bär samma efternamn var inte direkt det lättaste. Det är ju dock inte bokens fel att jag har svårt för namn!

Boken är ofantligt väl efterforskad och det märks att författaren har gjort sin research samt verkar väldigt kunnig i ämnet om Sturarna. Deras historia är sammanlänkad med den "galne" kungen Erik XIV som avsattes i en kupp ledd av hans bror Johan, som sedan kom att bli kung Johan III. Sturarnas blodslinje tog i princip slut kort efter att Erik XIV avsattes och sen dess har det inte funnits någon mer Sture.

En enormt intressant och givande bok om man är intresserad av historia och hur landet styrdes under 1400-1500-talet. Det var också intressant att få lära sig mer om hur det var att vara en del av den svenska adeln. Det var inte alls lika slappt och gött som jag först trodde! De hade väldigt mycket krav på sig jämfört med andra folkgrupper i samhället.


Mitt favoritcitat ur boken: Nils Sture får en order av kung Erik XIV att kväsa ett bondeuppror i Varberg 1565, där bönderna ska böta ett par oxar, men om detta inte betalas in så:

"... utan det emotstå, antingen med tredskhet, eller eljest något myteri anrätta, då skall herr Nils Sture dem hemsöka liksom andra högstb:te Kongl. Maj:ts och Sveriges rikes uppenbara fiender. Låtandes först sticka elden ann på 20 eller 30 gårdar och dem ihjälslå som störste roten till sådan motvillighet hava varit, sedan varde de sig väl betänkande, och vele då underdåningen bedja K. M:t om nåd, då må herr Nils dem än förskona".

Title: The Stures - The power, murders and wrong-doings.

Story: Most people have probably heard of the Stures or at least the Sture murders (atleast if you're swedish). A swedish noble family with power and money, but that fell on hard times - not unlike the Kennedys in USA but in Sweden during the 1500's instead. Who were they and how did they got so close to the power during approx. 200 years? Why did they disappear and what became their legacy? The Sture clan went straight from power into our history books. This is their story.

My opinion of the book: I am a bit of a history nerd and like to read non fiction books, but my big weakness is remembering names... I am so bad at it and it doesn't get any easier if characters or people's names are the same, which was the case during medieval time. Everyone's name was Sten, Nils, Svante, Knut, Erik or Margareta, Anna, Cecilia, Märta and so on. So keeping track of who's who when they also have the same last name is not easy. It's not the book's fault though that I can't keep track of names!

The book is well reasearched and it shows. It also seems like the author knows alot about this subject. The Sture family's history is connected to the "mad" king Erik XIV that was dethroned in a coup led by his brother Johan, who later became king Johan III. The Sture bloodline pretty much ended shortly after the coup and since then there's not been any more Stures.

A very interesting book worthwhile if you are interested in history and how the country was ruled during the 1400-1500's. It was also interesting to know more about the swedish nobles. It wasn't as easy and nice as I first thought! They had alot of demands on them compared to other groups of people in society.

My favorite quote from the book: I can't really translate the quote into english since it's written in "older swedish" and I wouldn't even know where to start if I tried. But the quote is about an order that Nils Sture got from king Erik XIV to stop a riot among farmers in Varberg, in the year of 1565, by forcing them to pay 2 oxen to the Crown as a punishment and if they refused, Nils Sture was commanded to burn down "20 or 30 farms" and to beat them all to death, so people are taught a lesson of who's in charge and who's not.

Har fått hem ännu ett recensionsexemplar, så tänkte att jag får väl visa den också. Jag har en hel del böcker i kö, så får se när jag får tummen ur och läser dem (inte för att jag har så många recensionsexemplar). Jag har sett den här boken titt som tätt på instagram så det var kul att få hem ett eget exemplar så man kan läsa och jämföra sin åsikt med vad andra har tyckt om den.

Tycker du om att få recensionsexemplar? Brukar du få hem dem i en strid ström eller är det mer i perioder?

A new review copy found it's way home, so I figured I should maybe show it as well. I have a few books in que, so I don't know when I'll get to this one (not because I have so many review copies to read). I've seen this book on and off on instagram, so it was fun to get a copy of my own so I can read it and compare my opinion with others.

Då var det dags för ännu en summering. I juli läste jag lite segare än vanligt, men å andra sidan hade jag en del att göra på jobbet, så när man väl kom hem var man för trött för att orka läsa. I slutet av månaden började det lätta, men lite för mycket. Nu har jag knappt nånting att göra på arbetstid, så sitter mest av tiden, haha. Har svarat på brev, läst böcker, spelat spel och löst korsord. Det är vad jag gör på arbetstid just nu. Men det är bara en vecka kvar, sen har jag 3 veckors semester och det ska bli så jäkla skönt.

It's time again for yet another summary. In July I read a bit slower than I usually do, but on the other hand I had alot to do at work, so when I got home I was just too tired to read anything. In the end of the month the workload decreased alot. I barely have anything to do now at work, so I mostly just do my hours, haha. I've answered letters, read books, played games and done crosswords. That's what I do at work right now. But it's only one week left, then I'm off on vacation for 3 weeks and I can't wait!

Handling: Lexi bor i en liten by vid namn Near tillsammans med sin mamma, lillasyster och farbror. Livet där är enkelt och lugnt, alla känner alla och människor känner sig trygga där. Men en dag rapporteras det om att en främling har setts till i och runt Near, vilket gör människorna misstänksamma. Vad gör främlingen där och vad vill han? Kort därefter försvinner ett barn ur sin säng mitt i natten utan ett spår. Snart försvinner ytterligare en och paniken är ett faktum. De flesta är överens om att det måste vara främlingen som stjäl deras barn.
Men Lexi är inte så säker, för hon har nämligen påbörjat sin egen utredning, till sin farbrors förtret. Spåren leder henne till både den mystiska främlingen och en gammal legend om en kraftfull häxa som bodde i byn för väldigt längesen. Kan Lexi lösa mysteriet och hitta de försvunna barnen innan det är för sent?


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är tydligen författarens första bok som hon fick utgiven och oj, vilken bra början! Boken handlar om magi, rädsla för det annorlunda/okända, men också om att gå sin egen väg och trotsa alla runt sig för att man vet att det är rätt väg att gå. Jag älskade verkligen boken från start till slut, för den har en väldigt speciell atmosfär och jag gillar sättet den är skriven på. Det är ingen ny och komplicerad värld som man kastas in i på en gång, utan det kommer pö om pö, i takt med att man lär känna karaktärerna. Det är också intressant att handlingen utspelar sig i en annan tid, men man vet inte när. Det är inte i nutid, men inte heller medeltid, utan nånstans mittemellan och på nåt sätt känns den lite tidlös. Jag gillade också legenden om häxan och vad den ledde fram till. En riktigt, riktigt bra bok som faktiskt passar de flesta, oavsett ålder (dock inte för små barn, då den innehåller en viss del blod, skelett, våld osv). Kan verkligen rekommendera den här boken!

Story: Lexi lives in a small village called Near, together with her mother, little sister and uncle. Life there is simple and calm everyone knows each other and people feel safe there. But one day there are sightings av a stranger around and in the village, which makes the villagers suspicious. What is the stranger doing there and what does he want? Soon there after a child disappears mysteriously without a trace. Soon yet another child vanishes and panick spreads like wildfire. Most of the people are sure it must be the stranger who's snatching their children away.
But Lexi isn't so sure, because she's launched her own investigation, against her uncle's wishes. The clues leads her to both the mysterious stranger and to an old legend about a powerful witch that used to live in the village a very long time ago. Can Lexi solve the mystery and find the missing children before it's too late?

My opinion of the book: This is apparently the author's first book she got published and wow, what a start! The book is about magic, fear for the unknown, but also doing what is right despite what everyone else around you thinks about it. I loved the book from the beginning to the end, because it's got this very special atmosphere and I like the way it's written. It's not a new and complicated world you're thrown into right away, it comes in small pieces along with getting to know the characters. It's also interesting that the story takes place in another time, but you dont know when. It's not in today's society but not during the medieval time either, it's somewhere in between, so it kind of feels a bit timeless. I also liked the legend about the witch and what it lead up to. A really, really good book that fits most people, no matter age (not for small children though, since there are bits of blood, skeletons, violence and such). I can really recommend this book!

Once Upon a Dream - a Twisted Tale

Handling: De flesta har väl hört sagan om Törnrosa, den unga skönheten som förbannas på sitt dop av den onda Maleficent att dö på sin 16:de födelsedag, men vars förbannelse omvandlas av 3 goda féer till en 100-årig lång sömn. Så långt är berättelsen densamma. Men vad händer ifall prinsen som ju ska rädda Törnosa med en kyss, själv faller ner i samma sömn istället för att väcka henne? Är den långa sömnen full av drömmar och vad utspelar sig i drömvärlden i så fall eller är den helt drömlös?

Detta är en annan sida utav historien om Törnrosa som består av lögner, magi och kämparanda men också att hitta sig själv.


Min åsikt om boken: Jag är ju svag för Disney överlag, så jag läser mer än gärna böcker om diverse Disneysagor, men allra helt de med en twist. Som med "As Old as Time" har samma författare hållit sig till grunden av sagan, men skrivit den ur en annan vinkel. Är Maleficent verkligen ond? Varför har Aurora inga minnen av sina föräldrar och varför får ingen lämna slottet?

En helt ok bok med en twist, men som jag uppfattade som lite svag. Den var inte riktigt lika bra som den om Skönheten & Odjuret, men jag gillar ändå att författaren inte skriver om klassiskt svaga kvinnliga karaktärer som hela tiden måste räddas, för det är så enormt uttjatat, tråkigt och enkelriktat. Karaktärerna här är mångfasetterade och verklighetstrogna, vilket ju så klart gör mycket för berättelsen. Men som sagt, upplevde att handlingen var lite seg. Det hände egentligen inte så mycket och jag tyckte slutet var lite intetsägande. Jag hade nog förväntat mig lite mer än så. Men överlag en helt ok bok.

Story: Most of us have probably heard the fairytale about Sleeping Beauty, the young girl who was cursed during her baptism by the evil Maleficent to die on her 16th birthday, but who's curse was converted to a 100 year long sleep. So far the stories are the same. But what happens if the prince, who's supposed to save Sleeping Beauty with a kiss, falls into the same deep sleep instead of saving her? Is the long sleep full of dreams and if so, what happens in that dream world or is it completely dreamless?

This is another side of the story about Sleeping Beauty that consists of lies, magic and a fighting spirit, but also about finding yourself.

My opinion of the book: I have a weak spot for Disney in generel, so I'm more than happy to read various Disney fairytales, but mostly those with a twist. As with "As Old as Time" the same author has stuck to the basic parts of the fairytale but written it from another angle. Is Maleficent really evil? Why does Aurora not have any memories of her parents and why are everyone forbidden from leaving the castle? 

A ok book with a twist, that I however perceived as a bit weak. It wasn't as good as the book about the Beauty & the Beast, but I still liked that the author isn't writing about the classic weak female characters in need of rescue, because that's been overused, is boring and one-sided. The characters are multifaceted and believable, which hightens the reading experience alot. But as mentioned, I found the story a bit tardy. Not much really happened and I think the ending was a bit bland. I had expected a bit more to be honest. But over all it's an ok book.

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

Igår hade jag och maken en heldag på stan, då vi kände att vi behövde komma hemifrån lite. Vi är egentligen hemmasittare deluxe men ibland behöver man lite miljöombyte och nåt nytt att prata om. Vi hade tänkt att frukost/lunch på Kopps, då deras vegetariska toast är väldigt god, men då har de tydligen slutat med det! Så vi fick lunka därifrån och försöka komma på nåt nytt ställe att äta på.
Hur som, vi gick till Scifibokhandeln och kollade runt lite. Eftersom vi fortfarande håller på att fixa mycket här hemma och har köpt lite grejer så är i alla fall jag inte speciellt rik, så jag fick verkligen försöka hålla tillbaka lite på bokshoppingen, men trots det lyckades jag ändå köpa böcker för 1000 spänn... Vågar inte tänka på hur dyrt det hade blivit om jag INTE hade hållit igen, haha. Fy tusan!

Men jag är glad ändå, för jag har så jäkla mycket att läsa nu! Jag har fortfarande inte läst alla böcker från shoppingomgången innan min födelsedag i maj och så har det fyllts på med jämna mellanrum. Tror inte jag behöver köpa fler böcker alls i år egentligen, jag klarar mig nog fram till nyår i alla fall.

Yesterday my husband and I went into town and spent the whole day there, since we felt like we needed to get away from home for a while. We really love to be at home but sometimes you just need to be in a new environment and get new stuff to talk about.
We had plan to eat breakfast/lunch at Kopps, because their vegetarian toasts are really good, but apparently they'vre stopped doing them! So we had to leave and find a new place to eat at.
Anyway, we went to the Scify bookshop and had a look. Since we're fixing alot at home and bought stuff I'm not wealthy, so I had to really hold myself back in regards of the book shopping but despite that I managed to buy books for 1000 SEK ($103.45)... I dont dare to think how expensive it would have gotten if I DIDN'T hold back, haha! Jeez...

But I'm glad anyway, because I have so much to read now! I still haven't read all the books from my last shopping before my birthday in May and I've gotten new books now and again since then. I don't think I need to buy more books at all this year really, I probably have enough to last me until New Year's at least.

Konsten att skära i kroppar/The Butchering art

Handling: Hur opererade människor förr i tiden, närmare bestämt under 1800-talet? Hur många överlevde operation utan smärtstillande eller narkos och hur gjorde man för att undvika infektioner?
Joseph Lister är en tystlåten men ambitiös man som bestämmer sig för att bli kirurg, men de höga dödsantalen bland patienterna, speciellt på sjukhus, stör honom. Vad är det som händer i kroppen och varför dör hans patienter? Den allmänna åsikten är att dålig luft (miasma) är det som gör människor sjuka, men är det verkligen så? Joseph Lister vigde hela sitt liv åt att lösa en av de största medicinska gåtorna genom tiderna, men lyckades han?


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en salig blandning av historisk och medicinsk fakta blandat med biografiska delar. Boken avhandlar en hel del om Joseph Lister och hans liv, vilket var väldigt intressant, men den tar även upp hur det var i det viktorianska England och vad både läkare och de flesta vetenskapsmän trodde på under den perioden. Tycker man om historia och faktaböcker så bör man definitivt läsa den här boken, då den tar upp utvecklingen av kirurgin på ett intressant och spännande sätt. Den var aldrig långtråkig utan höll ens intresse vid liv hela tiden. En mycket bra bok!

Det var extra intressant att få läsa om hur de fick tag på lik att träna på innan de blev kirurger (gäng dealade inte med knark på den tiden, utan kroppar...) och att de flesta operationer hade publik. Tänk att vara patient innan någon form av narkos eller smärtlindring fanns. Inte nog med att man ska utstå enormt mycket smärta utan samtidigt ha kanske 50 personer som sitter och stirrar på en under tiden. Jag förstår om folk drog sig för att gå till läkaren eller uppsöka sjukhus (som även kallades för dödshus pga det höga antal som dog medan de låg där).

Original title: The Butchering Art.

Story: How did surgeries go about back in the days, say in the 1800's? How many survived a surgical procedures without painkillers or anaesthesia and how did they avoid infections?
Joseph Lister is a silent but ambitious man who decides to become a surgeoin, but they high death rates among the patients, especially in the hospitals, is bother him. What's happening in the body and why are his patients dying? The general opinion is that bad air (miasma) is what makes people sick, but is that really true? Joseph Lister dedicated hiw whole life to solve on of the biggest medical enigmas of our time, but did he succeed?

My opinion of the book: This is the mix of historical and medical facts mixed with biographic parts. The majority of the book is about Joseph Lister and his life, which was very interesting, but the book is also about how the victorian society in England worked and what most doctors and scientists believed during that time. If you like history and non fiction books you should really read this book, since it's about the evolution of surgery written in an interesting and exciting way. It was never boring, it held me in it's grip the whole time. A very interesting book!

It was even more interesting to read about how they procured bodies to practice on before they became surgeons (gangs didn't do deals with drugs at that time, but bodies...) and that most surgeries had an audience. Imagine being a patient before any kind of pain realief or anaesthesia existed. Not only that you would have to endure extreme amounts of pain but to also have an audience of maybe 50 people sitting in the room staring at you the whole time. I understand if people avoided going to the doctor or hospitals (which was also called death houses because of the high amount of people who died while staying there).
