Handling: Pip lever i Clarel tillsammans med sin syster El. Han livnär sig som ficktjuv och smyger runt i de mörka gränderna i staden. En dag råkar han komma över en silverask med ett hjärta i och han förstår inte riktigt vad grejen är, men snart är det uppenbart att han fått tag på något mycket mäktigt för lönnmördare tar upp jakten på honom. Hjärtat i asken påverkar honom också och består av någon konstig form av magi. Det verkar också som att det är ute efter hämnd.
Tillsammans med sin syster och hennes bästa vän Oni dras Pip in i ett maktspel om hela kontinentens överlevnad...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag trodde först att det här var en middle gradebok så jag blev lite förvånad när det pratades om tortyr och avskurna halsar, men nu har jag förstått att det är en fantasybok. Jag har egentligen inte så mycket att säga om den annat än att världen kändes lite för utvecklad för antalet sidor. Även om boken är 380 sidor lång så känns det som att just den här berättelsen hade behövt bestå av en trilogi, minst. Man hinner inte komma in på djupet varken i karaktärerna eller bakgrunden till allt som sker så jag tror definitivt att minst 1 bok till hade gjort det hela mer rättvisa. På grund av det kändes boken helt ok men inte mer än så. Jag kände mig aldrig riktigt engagerad, även om handlingen i sig inte är dålig men det saknades ett lager kan man väl säga. Boken är dock lättläst med ett snabbt tempo, så vill man ha något enkelt att läsa så funkar den definitivt.

Story: Pip lives in Clarel with his El. He supports them both by pickpocketing and sneaks around in the dark alleys of the city. One day he gets his hands on a silver casket with a heart in it and he doesn't really understand what it is but soon it's obvious that the thing is very powerful, because assassins are after him. The heart also begins to affect him and consists of some strange magic. It also seem to want revenge.
Together with his sister and her best friends Oni, Pip is drawn into a struggle of power that could affect the whole continent.

My opinion about the book: I first thought that this was a middle grade book so I was a bit surprised when there's was talk of torture and throats being cut off, but I now know it's a fantasy book. I really don't have much to say about it other than the world felt a bit too developed for the number of pages. Even though the book is 380 pages long it just felt like this story would have needed to be a triology, at least. You don't have time to fully get to know the characters or the backstory of everything that happens, so I think the story would have needed to consist of at least one more book. Because of that I think the book was alright but not much more than that. I never felt that engaged, även though the plot wasn't bad but it lacked a deeper layer, so to speak. The book was very easily read though with a fast pace, so if you want something light to read than this would work.

Idag tog vi en sväng till Scifibokhandeln igen. På grund av pandemin har man inte varit där lika ofta som man brukar men det kanske är bra för ens plånbok om inte annat? Jag har också märkt att jag inte köper lika mycket där längre heller. Känns som att jag är lite mer kräsen nu eller så håller jag hårdare i pengarna. Den här gången köpte jag bara 3 böcker och 1 manga. Vanligtvis kan jag gå därifrån med 8-10 böcker, så var ändå ganska sparsam idag.

Hur som, här följer en kort beskrivning av vad böckerna handlar om:

The Maleficent Seven handlar om en ny mörk tro som sprider sig runt om landet Essoran. Städer och samhällen smulas sönder inför dess makt, oförberedda och oförmögna att vinna över. Nederlag och ödslighet verkar vara oundvikligt.
Demonologen Black Herran är dock inte villig att ge upp så snart. för 40 år sedan övergav hon sin egen blodtörstiga armé på kvällen för deras slutgiltiga seger, men hon tänker inte göra det igen. För att besegra den här nya fienden behöver hon återsamla sina gamla kaptener; vampyr, nekromant, orchövding, krigsgud, galen alkemist och piratdrottning.
Kan hon överkomma deras våldsamma rivalitet? Kan hon övertala dem att förlåta henne för hennes svek? Kommer de här sju legendariska skurkarna ens vara tillräckliga för att stå emot en armé av fanatiker?

Chi's Sweet Home Part 2 är om katten Chi som fått ett hem hos en familj och fortsätter att upptäcka världen. Hon träffar både nya människor och djur och försöker förstå sig på hur världen funkar.

You Goddess! handlar om olika gudinnor från världens olika kulturer. De har utmålats som ytliga, onda, svaga osv, men var de verkligen det? Upptäck magnifika odödliga kvinnor!

Son of the Storm handlar om Danso som är en lärd man på väg mot storhet i staden Bassa. Kruxet är att han vill inte ha allt det. Istället föredrar han att jaga förbjudna historier om vad som finns utanför stadens murar. Bassas elit påstår att det inte finns något av intresse där ute och stadens immigranter har svurit ett tysthetslöfte.
Men när Danso möter en krigare som använder sig av magi som inte borde finnas ställs han inför stadens mörka hemligheter. Dragen till stadens gömda historia påbörjar han en resa bortom stadens murar och kaoset som uppstår av hans upptäckter hotar att förstöra hela kungariket.

Har ni läst någon av böckerna?

We went to the Scifi bookstore again. Because of the pandemic we haven't been there as much as we usued to but maybe that's good for your wallet? I've also noticed that I don't buy as much there any more. It feels like I'm a bit picky now or holding on to my money more. This time I only bought 3 books and 1 manga. I used to walk away from that store with like 8-10 books before, so I was pretty frugal today.

Anyway, here's a short description of what the books are about:

The Maleficent Seven is about a dark new faith that is ravaging the lands of Essoran. Cities and towns crumble before its power, unprepared and unable to fight. Defeat and desolation seem inevitable.
But dread demonologist Black Herran is not willing to give up so soon. 40 years ago, she abandoned her own bloodthirsty army on the eve of its final victory, but she won't do that again. To defeat this new foe she needs to reunite her old captains again: vampire, necromancer, orc cheiftain, war-god, twisted alchemist and pirate queen.
Can she overcome their vicious rivalries? Persuade them to forgive her betrayal? Will therese seven legendary villains even be enought to defeat an army of fanatics hell-bent on conquest?

Chi's Sweet Home Part 2 is about the cat Chi who got a home with a family and is still discovering the world. She meets both new people and animals and is trying to figure out how the world works.

Handling: Hetty Rhodes växte upp förslavad på ett plantage tillsammans med sin mamma och syster. Men till slut lyckas hon ta sig därifrån och bosätter sig i Philadelphia, där hon träffar på Benjy. Tillsammans börjar de hjälpa förslavade att fly genom att bli "konduktörer" på den underjordiska tågrälsen. Förutom att hjälpa människor att fly till friheten tar de sig också an olika uppdrag, allt från att hitta försvunna personer till att lösa mordmysterier.
När en av deras nära vänner hittas mördad börjar Hetty och Benjy leta efter svar, men ju mer de letar desto fler frågor och mysterier stöter de på. Paret tvingas möta folks mörka sidor, även bland folk de trodde att de kände...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag hade hoppats en del på den här boken, för den låter ju intressant. Det är mysterier, folks kamp för frihet, magi och allt möjligt men tyvärr... Boken var ingen höjdare. Jag känner att något saknas. Jag får inte riktigt lära känna karaktärerna och det är väldigt många att hålla reda på, som dessutom har liknande bakgrund. Man får inte riktig tid på sig att skapa ett band till någon av dem. Mordmysteriet kändes inte så spännande eller mystiskt heller för den delen. Jag saknade atmosfären av mysterium och olösta gåtor. Allt kändes ganska platt.
Det var också lite svårt att hänga med i magin, i alla fall i början. Den magi ("celestial magic") som Hetty använder är genom att "rita upp" sigill av stjärntecken/stjärnbilder i luften (eller sy in i kläder) men sedan finns det en annan sort som bara kallas för "Sorcery" och vad skillnaden var fick man aldrig reda på. Den enda man fick veta var att "Sorcery" utövades med trollspön och det fick bara vita personer inneha, men utöver det vet jag inte skillnaden. Men det verkade som att "Socery" var mer kraftfullt.

Sedan hittade jag flera jättekonstiga meningar, som jag antar är felskrivna? Exempel på det: "Hetty squinted into the light to see, hoping to be wrong. Hoping that else stood in Benjy's place, and he was in the crowd instead" (sid 343). Ska det vara "Hoping SOMEONE else stood in Benjy's place"? För det känns som att nåt saknas i den meningen. Den låter väldigt konstig. Nästa exempel (mitt i en lång mening): "... horrified at what she saw and indignant that he would allow himself to pushed around like that" (sid 358). Ska det vara "to BE pushed around like that?". Ett sista exempel: "The only sign that had hadn't moved since she fallen asleep, was the stack of papers around him" (sid 385). Ska det vara "that HE hadn't moved"? Och borde det inte vara "since she fell asleep"? Inte för att jag är expert på engelska men det låter udda. Alltså, antingen har man inte korrekturläst boken alls (för det var såna här konstigheter på var och varannan sida) eller så är det nån sorts dialekt som jag inte fattar, men det känns ju inte heller rätt. Alla som läser ska väl kunna förstå handlingen? Det här drog definitivt ner på läsupplevelsen. Så överlag var boken ganska medelmåttig. Den var inte jättedålig men inte heller bra, den kunde ha varit mycket bättre.

Story: Hetty Rhodes grew up enslaved at a plantation together with her mom and sister. But eventually she managed to get away from there and settles down in Philadelphia, where she meets Benjy. Together they start help enslaved people to flee by becoming "conductors" on the underground railroad. But besides helping people flee to freedom they also take on different missions, from finding missing people to solving mysteries.
When one of their close friends is found murdered, Hetty and Benjy starts looking for answers but they only seem to find more questions and mysteries. The couple is forced to face people's dark sides, even among people they thought they knew...

My opinion about the book: I had high hope in this book because it really does seem interesting with mysteries, people's struggle for freedom, magic and so on but... It wasn't that great. I feel like something is missing. I didn't really get to know the characters and it's a lot of people to keep track of, with the same background on top of that. I didn't get that bond with any of them. The murder mystery wasn't really that suspenseful or mysteries for that matter. It lacked that atmosphere of mystery and unsolved riddles. It felt pretty flat.
It also felt hard to get a grip on the magic, at least in the beginning. The magic that Hetty uses ("celestial magic") is by "drawing" sigils of zodiac signs/star constellations in the air (or sewn onto clothes) but then there's another sort of magic that is simply just called "Sorcery" and what the difference is I don't really know. The only thing that was told in the book was that "Sorcery" was used with wands and that only white people could use them, but other than that I have no idea. But it seemed like "Sorcery" was more powerful.

I also found really strange sentences that I guess was misspelled? One exemple of that is: "Hetty squinted into the light to see, hoping to be wrong. Hoping that else stood in Benjy's place, and he was in the crowd instead" (page 343). Is it supposed to be "Hoping SOMEONE else stood in Benjy's place"? Because it feels like something is missing in that sentence. It sounds strange. Another exempel (from in the middle of a long sentence) is:"... horrified at what she saw and indignant that he would allow himself to pushed around like that" (page 358). Is it supposed to be "to BE pushed around like that?". Last exemple: "The only sign that had hadn't moved since she fallen asleep, was the stack of papers around him" (page 385). Is it supposed to be "that HE hadn't moved"? And shouldn't it be "since she fell asleep"? Not that I'm an expert in english but it sounds weird. Either someone didn't proof read the book at all (I found many of these strange sentences on every other page) or it's written on some kind of dialect that I don't get, but that doesn't seem right. Everyone reading should be able to understand the story, right? This definitely brought down the reading experience quite a bit. So overall the book was pretty mediocre. It wasnt really bad but not great either, could have been so much better.

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf

Jag fick ju för mig att köpa en bok om Kalevala efter många års sökande och när jag ändå var ute efter den blev det att jag köpte fler böcker som jag har tänkt köpa sedan länge. Idag kom allt fram till slut. Eftersom jag spelar en hel del Animal Crossing just nu får vi väl se hur mycket jag får läst, haha. Risken är ju att det hamnar på efterkälken men jaja, så kan det vara ibland.

Ariadne handlar om prinsessan av Kreta och ena dottern till kung Minos. Hon har växt upp till vrålet av Minotauren i labyrinten under palatset - kung Minos stora skam och hennes bror - som kräver blodsoffer varje år.
När prinsen av Aten, Thesus, kommer till Kreta som blodsoffer till Minotauren faller Ariadne för honom. Men om hon hjälper honom betyder det att hon måste förråda sin familj och i en värld som styrs av nyckfulla gudar kan det vara ödesdigert att dra till sig uppmärksamhet. Ariadne har hört mängder med historier om kvinnor straffats för mäns gärningar men hon är inställd på att gå ett annat öde till mötes. Kommer hennes beslut att hjälpa Thesus att leda till ett lyckligt slut? Eller kommer hon bli ett offer för sin älskares ambitioner?

Den Konserverade Änkan handlar om Sara som lever i Stockholm år 1779. Hon har nyligen gifts bort med den dubbelt så gamla möbelkonstnären Georg Haupt. Föga anar hon att bara 5 år senare är hon änka, har sju barn och ansvar för en berömd verkstad. Påtryckningar från omgivningen om att hon ska gifta om sig hopar sig. Hennes ivrigaste uppvaktare är den hon fruktar mest, en man som inte skyr några medel i sin jakt på att ta över verkstaden. Kan Sara lyckas stå emot honom och det mäktiga skrået?

Romanov handlar om den ryska kejsarsläkten som förvandlade ett krigshärjat furstendöme till världens största imperium och sedan förlorade allt. Hur gick det till?
Boken berättar ingående om 20 olika tsarer och tsaritsor som drabbats av genialitet och galenskap, samvetslöst dödande och sexuell dekadens.

Tutankhamon handlar om den berömda unga faron från antika Egypten och upptäckten av hans gravkammare. Boken tar upp allt från myter om faraons förbannelse, Tutankhamons liv och rike samt Egyptenfebern som drog igenom Europa på 1800-talet.

Kalevala är det finska nationaleposet som handlar om skapelsemyter, gudar, folktro och mytologi. Människor med magiska krafter kan sjunga till sig saker och vinna strider genom sin sång. Andra kan förvandla sig till djur. Folksångerna samlades ihop under 1800-talet och blev en succé.

I finally found a book about Kalevala after searching for many years and when I was "out" bookshopping I just had to get the other books I had thought of buying for a long time. Everything arrived today. Since I play a lot of Animal Crossing right now we'll see how much I'll read, haha. There's a chance the books will remain unread for a while, but that's life.

Ariadne is about the princess of Crete and one of king Minos' daughters. She has grown up to the bellows of the Minotaur in the labyrinth beneath the palace - King Minos' greatest shame and Ariadne's brother - who demands blood every year.
When the prince of Athens, Theseus, arrives in Crete as a sacrifice Ariadne falls in love with him. But helping Thesus means betraying her family and in a world ruled by fickled gods it might be fatal to draw their attention to oneself. Ariadne has heard too many tales of women being punished for the acts of men but she is determined to set her own fate. Will her decision to help Theseus ensure her happy ending? Or will she find herself sacrificed for her lover's ambitions?

Den konserverade Änkan ("The Canned Widow") is about Sara who lives in Stockholm in the year of 1779. She's just been married to the twice as old furniture artist Georg Haupt. Little does she know that 5 years later she'll be a widow, have 7 children and the responsibility of a famous workshop. People around her pressure her to get married again. Her most eager suitor is the one she fears the most, a man who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the workshop. Will Sara be able to stand against him and the powerful guild?

Romanov is about the tsar family who turned a war-torn princedom into the world's biggest imperium and then lost it all. How did that happen?
The book goes into depth about 20 tsars and tsaritsas affected by geniality and madness, unscrupulous killings and sexuell decadens.

Tutankhamon is about the famous young pharao from ancient Egypt and the discovery of his tomb. The book adresses the curse of the pharao, the life of Tutankhamon and his kingdom but also the Egyptian fever that swept across Europe during the 1800's.

Kalevala is the finnish national epos about creation myths, gods, folktales and mythology. Humans with magical abilities can sing things to them and win battles through their songs. Others can turn themselves into animals. The folk songs were gathered in the 1800's and became a success.

Handling: Kajla bor i Norvala och tillhör trejarfolket, ett sorts mellantig mellan människor och troll. I Norvala brukade det råda balans mellan människor, troll och trejar men plötsligt började människorna ta över och jaga bort eller döda de andra folken.
När Kajla dras mot norr upptäcker hon något som kan vara början på slutet för människorna, men har hon vad som krävs för att sätta allt i rullning?

Min åsikt om boken: Jag har hört bra om den här boken och har varit väldigt nyfiken på den. Nu fick jag äntligen tummen ur att läsa den också. I början tyckte jag att det gick lite för snabbt. På bara cirka 2 kapitel hade vi redan färdats 10 år i tiden och det var inte riktigt min grej. Hade nog hellre fått det berättat för mig i dåtid än i nutid. Det gick liksom för snabbt. Men så fort man kommer förbi det blir handlingen väldigt bra och spännande! Jag tycker Norvala som värld verkar så spännande, hade velat resa dit och utforska. Handlingen känns verkligen som en hyllning till naturen och allt gott den ger en samtidigt som den har lite mystik till sig. Det jag uppskattar mest, förutom intressanta och välutvecklade karaktärer, är att sexscenerna inte är överdrivna utan mer naturliga och inte beskrivna i detalj. Jag har svårt för sexscener där allt ska beskrivas i minsta detalj och sträcka sig över flera sidor (tänk Sarah J Mass), det slapp man här, tack och lov! Ett tag mot slutet blev det lite segt men bara i en kort stund innan allt rullade på igen. Jag tyckte mycket om Kajla som karaktär, eftersom hon var väldigt frisinnad och självsäker utan att bli arrogant. Jag gillade också att hon hade en ilsken ådra i sig, det är uppfriskande! Överlag tyckte jag boken var riktigt bra och jag är väldigt nyfiken på fortsättningen med tanke på hur den här boken slutade.

Title: This book doesn't have an english title so I just translated it from swedish.

Story: Kajla lives in Norvala and belongs to the Trejar people, kind of a middle thing between humans and trolls. There used to be a balance in Norvala between humans, trolls and Trejar but the humans took over all of a sudden and chased or killed the other people.
When Kajla is drawn to the north she discovers something that might be the beginning of the end for the humans, but does she have what it takes to set it in motion?

My opinion about the book: I've heard good things about this book so I was curious about it and I've finally had the time to read it. In the beginning I feel like it went too fast. After only 2 chapters we had travel 10 years into the future and that's not really my thing. I would have liked for it to have been told to me in past tense rather than present tense. It just went too fast for me. But after that the plot gets really good and suspenseful! I think Norvala, as a world, seem so excisting. I would have liked to travel there and explore. It feels like the book is a tribute to nature and everything it gives you, but it also has some mystique to it. What I appreciate the most, besides interesting and well developed characters, is that the sex scenes are not over the top or described in details. I have a hard time with sex scenes where everything need to be told in every detail and go on for several pages (think Sarah J Maas). This book didn't have that, thank the gods! Towards the end the pace slowed than a bit before it picked back up again. I liked Kajla as a characters because she was free spirited and confident without being arrogan. I also liked that she had an angry side to her, it was refreshing! Overall I think the book was good and I look forward to the sequel, considering how the first book ended.

Sirens of the Norse Sea - The Waters of Skagerrak

Jag kom på att jag glömde inkludera den här serietidningen i summeringen av allt jag läste i juni och den förtjänar verkligen lite uppmärksamhet, så här kommer en egen "recension" (fast i mindre format).
Den handlar kort och gott om vikingar och sirener. Under en väldigt lång tid har de krigat mot varandra. Så fort de råkar stöta på varandra blir det rena blodbadet. Men en dag föds en ovanlig flicka av en siren och hamnar på nåt sätt på land. Där blir hon omhändertagen av ett barnlöst par. Efter många om och men verkar det vara upp till henne att eventuellt kunna mäkla fred mellan arterna. Men är det möjligt efter så lång tid?

Serien är riktigt bra ritad och väldigt spännande. Den innehåller som sagt både vikingar och sirener, men även troll! Jag tyckte den var underhållande och häftig att läsa. Gillade verkligen idén med den. Detta är första volymen och volym två heter "The Two Worlds of Freydis". Ser fram emot att läsa den!

I just remembered that I forgot to include this comic book in the summary of all I read in Junie and it deserves attention, so here is its own "review" (but shorter than usual).
In short it's about vikings and sirens. For a long time they've been at war with each other. As soon as they happen to meet it ends in a bloodbath. But one day an unusual girl is born by a siren and ends up on land. She's taken care of by a childless couple. After sometime it seems to be up to her to eventually make peace between the two species. But is it possible after so much time?

The series is really beutifully drawn and very suspenseful. It does contain vikings and sirens, as I wrote, but also trolls! I thought it was entertaining and awesome to read. I really liked the idea with it. This is the first volume and the second volume is valled "The Two Worlds of Freydis". I so look forward to read it!

Handling: Angrboda slickar sina sår i Järnskogen efter hennes prövning hos gudarna. En dag får hon besök av Loke som har något som tillhör henne. Först är Angrboda misstänksam mot honom men snart spirar känslorna mellan dem och tillsammans får de barn tillsammans. För en gång skull känns livet bra men snart hopar sig farorna. Angrboda är kunnig i sejd och har, med stor sorg, sett hur framtiden utspelar sig. Hon vet inte exakt vad som leder till det, men inser att hon måste skydda sina barn på nåt sätt. Frågan är dock hur man undviker något som ödet redan har förutbestämt?

Min åsikt om boken: Kan man sin nordiska mytologi så vet man nog vilka barnen är, om inte så kan det vara intressant att kolla upp. Angerboda har inte en jättestor roll inom nordisk mytologi, hon nämns bara kort som modern till de här barnen (avslöjar inte vilka om man inte redan vet) och vad deras existens leder till. Jag är ju en mytologinörd och tycker det är så kul att jämföra mytologier med varandra, speciellt grekisk med nordisk, för de påminner en del om varandra. Vi har t.ex. de tre nornorna som spinner livstrådar och bestämmer hur länge varje människa ska leva och exakt samma figurer finns inom grekisk mytologi. Angerboda liknar också Circe/Kirke rätt mycket, i alla fall i den här boken. Båda är häxor och kan magi, de lever ensamma och vill mest vara i fred. Men det kommer alltid någon (en man) som ska förstöra idyllen för dem.
Det jag gillar med nordisk mytologi är hur icke perfekta gudarna är. Asarna är inte idealpersoner direkt. De är båda griniga, giriga, arroganta och opportunister. De gör alltid vad som är bäst för dem själva och har inget emot att använda list eller bryta löften för att få som de vill. Det är väl det som gör dem så lätta att identifiera sig med. De är inte perfekta utan snarare väldigt mänskliga.
Loke är ju speciell också, för enligt historiker/experter var han en viktig del i mytologin men han verkar inte ha blivit lika vördad som de andra gudarna. T.ex. finns det inga gamla bynamn som innehåller hans namn. Men vi har väldigt många bynamn med Tor, Frej/Freja, Oden osv. Han verkar mest ha varit en motpol och anstiftare till problem. Det jag gillar med Loke är att han känns så ADHD-ig. Han är impulsiv, både i handling och tal, han förstår inte varför gudarna blir så arga hela tiden och han är inte riktigt som alla andra (vilket hans olika skepnader och eskapader vittnar om). Han är inte riktigt accepterad eller känner sig helt hemma i Asgård (både vad gäller den här boken i sig och inom mytologin).

Det var en lång utläggning om nordisk mytologi, haha. Boken i sig är väldigt bra och håller ett bra tempo. Trots att det först inte händer så mycket så händer det ändå en hel del, vilket låter motsägelsefullt men man förstår om/när man läser boken. Angrboda är en väldigt intelligent och empatisk person. Det är svårt att inte tycka om henne och lida med henne. I den här boken är hon också Gullveig, vilket annars har tolkats som en annan person men det var tack vare Viktor Rydbergs bok "Fädernas Gudasagor" som hon blandades ihop med Angerboda. Annars anses Freja vara samma person som Gullveig. Och det är det som kan vara lite jobbigt med mytologier, gudarnas olika skepnader har olika namn. Detta är vanligt inom både nordisk och egyptisk mytologi. Det kan göra det krångligt att identifiera vilka som är vilka. Oden hade många olika namn beroende på vilken skepnad han tog och hur håller man koll på det?
Hur som, en jättebra och spännande bok som berättar om en känd del av nordisk mytologi men från en annan synvinkel, som vi inte tidigare har fått höra/läsa. Det märks att författaren har gjort väldigt mycket research och försökt hålla sig trogen till mytologin men ändå lyckats ge karaktärerna liv och en personlighet. Det var svårt att lägga ifrån sig boken men samtidigt ville man inte att den skulle ta slut.

Story: Angrboda licks her wounds in Ironwood after her ordeal with the gods. One day she's visited by Loke who has something that belongs to her. At first Angrboda is suspicious but soon their feelings for each other change and together they have children. For once life is good but soon there's danger in the horizon. Angrboda is an expert in seid and has, with great sorrow, forseen the future. She doesn't know exactly what leads up to it but she realises she must protect her children somehow. The question is how you avoid something that is destined to happen?

My opinion about the book: If you know norse mythology you know who the children are, but if not it might be interesting to look it up. Angerboda doesn't have a huge role in norse mythology, she's only mentiond briefly as the mother of these children (won't say which ones if you don't already know) and what their existence leads to. I'm a bit of a mythology nerd and think it's fun to compare mythologies to each other, for example greek and norse, because they are pretty similar. We have the three norns that spins life threads and decides how long each person lives and the exact same figures are in greek mythology. Angerboda also reminds me of Circe, at least in this book. They are both witches and know magic, they live alone and mostly want to be left alone. But there's aways someone (a man) who disturbes their peace.
What I like with norse mythology is how imperfect the gods are. The Aesir are not ideal persons, to say the least. They are cranky, greedy, arrogant and opportunists. They always do what's best for them and doesn't shy away from using tricks or break promises to get what they want. That's probably what's make them so easy to identify with. They're not perfect, rather more human.
Loki is also pretty special, because according to historians/experts he seems to have had an important role but he wasn't as revered as the other gods. For example we don't have old village names that contains his name. But we have a lot of village names with Thor, Frey/Freya, Odin and so on. He seems to have been an opposite pole and instigator of problems. What I like with Loki is that he's the face of ADHD. He's impulsive, both in action and speech, he doesn't understand why the gods get so mad at him all the time and he's not like the others (which his shape shifting and escapades shows). He's not really accepted or feel at home in Asgard (both in this book and the mythology).

That was a long account of norse mythology, ahha. The book itself is really good and has a great pace. Even though not much happens, a lot happens, which is contradictory but you get it if/when you read the book. Angrboda is a very intelligent and empathatic person. It's hard not to like her and suffer with her. In this book she's also Gullveigh, which has otherwise been interpreted as another person, but thanks to Viktor Rydberg's book "Fädernas Gudasagor" (like "The god sagas of the forefathers") she's been mixed in with Angerboda. It is otherwise interpreted as Freya being Gullveig. And that's what makes it a bit complicated with mythologies, gods can have other shapes and different names. This is common in norse and egyptian mythology. It can be really hard to identify who's who. Oden had many different names depending on his shape (shapeshifting) and how do you keep track of that?
Anyway, a really good and suspenseful book that tells a famous story from norse mythology but from another angle, that we've bever heard/seen before. It's obvious that the author has done a lot of research and tried to keep true to the story but still managed to make the characters come alive and have personalities. It was hard to put the book down and yet you didn't want it to end.

Handling: Agnes är en silhuettartist i den viktorianska staden Bath. Trots att fotografin har skapat sensation försöker Agnes hålla sitt företag vid liv samtidigt som hon försörjer sig själv, sin gamla mamma och sin föräldralösa systerson. Plötsligt börjar de få kunder hon har att dö och det verkar som att någon är ute efter att förstöra för Agnes, men vem och varför?
Till slut tar Agnes kontakt med ett barnmedium vid namn Pearl i hopp om att de döda kan ge ledtrådar. Snart upptäcker de båda att inget är som det verkar och att de kanske har öppnat dörrar som borde ha förblivit stängda...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag gillar Laura Purcells böcker väldigt mycket. Karaktärerna känns så levande och handlingen är alltid väldigt spännande. Dessutom gillar jag att hennes huvudkaraktärer oftast är kvinnor i en tid då kvinnor inte hade så mycket att säga till om. Det jag dock inte får en känsla av är det där läskiga eller skrämmande. Jag har sett flera recensioner där läsaren har tyckte att hennes böcker har varit lite läskiga med en krypande känsla av fasa. Det har jag aldrig uppfattat. Jag tycker inte hennes böcker är speciellt skrämmande eller fasliga. Men det är också därför jag sällan läser skräck, för jag blir aldrig skrämd eller får någon känsla av fasa. Jag är nog lite naiv och tar allt för vad det är utan närmare eftertanke.
Hur som, slutet av boken var lite för öppet för min smak. Det kunde tolkas på flera olika sätt och det gillar inte jag. Jag vill ha ett tydligt slut som inte kan tolkas på nåt mer sätt än "så här var det". Annars känns det lite meningslöst om man ska behöva tolka det. Men det är ju en smaksak så klart. Jag hade mina misstankar i början av boken angående vem eller vad som tog död på folk, men så kom en twist mot slutet och ihop med det öppna slutet blev det än värre att försöka förstå sig på vad som verkligen hade hänt. Men överlag var handlingen väldigt bra och spännande. Det hade ett bra tempo som höll ens intresse vid liv hela vägen och jag tyckte verkligen om både Pearl och Agnes. Även doktorn Simon kändes sympatisk. En mycket bra och läsvärd bok!

Story: Agnes is a silhouette artist in the victorian city Bath. Although photography has made a sensation Anges tries to keep her business afloat since she supports not only herself but her elderly mother and orphaned nephew. But all of a sudden the few customers she has begins to die and it seems like someone is out to ruin Agnes, but who and why?
Agnes approaches Pearl, a child medium, in the hopes of getting clues from the dead. But soon they both realises that nothing is as it seems and that they might have opened doors that should have been kept closed...

My opinion about the book: I like Laura Purcell's books a lot. The characters feels so alive and the plot is always so exciting. I also like that her main characters most often are women in a time when women didn't have a lot to say about anything. What I don't get is a sense of dread or horror. I've seen several reviews where the reader has thought her books were creepy of had a lingering feel of dread. I've never felt or thought that. But that's also why I hardlu ever read horror, because I don't get frightened or get any sense of dread. I think I might be a little naïve and just accept things without any thought.
Anyway, the ending was a bit too open for my taste. It could be interpreted in a lot of different ways and I don't like it. I want a clear cut ending that can't be interpreted in any other way than "this is what happened". Otherwise if feels a bit pointless when you can make it out to be this or that. But it's a matter of taste of course. I has my suspicions in the beginning regarind who or that killed people, but then there was a twist towards the end and together with the end it just made it so much harder to understand what really happened. But over all the plot was very good and suspenseful. It had a good flow that kept a hold of your interest all the way and I really liked both Pearl and Agnes. Also the doctor Simon felt very sympathetic. A very good book worth a read!

Ännu en ny månad och det är dags att sammanfatta föregående månad. Jag hann läsa lite mer än vanligt, vilket förvånade mig. Jag brukar generellt läsa mindre på semestern, men inte den här gången.
Totalt blev det 7 böcker, 2 serietidningar och 2 manga.

Pretty Violent var en födelsedagspresent från maken och den var riktigt rolig! Det handlar om Gamma Rae som vill bli en superhjälte men har uppfostrats av skurkar och hon är rätt klantig av sig, så folk dör till höger och vänster när hon lägger sig i. Sjukt underhållande!
Cicero-trilogin av Robert Harris var helt klart de bästa i högen. Jag blev som besatt av böckerna, haha. Jag tyckte de var så himla bra.

Yet another new month and it's time to summarize the previous month. I managed to read more than usual, which surprised me. I generally read less during my vacation, but not this time.
In total it came down to 7 books, 2 comic books and 2 mangas.

Pretty Violent was a birthdat gift from Le Husband and it was really entertaining! It's about Gamma Rae who wants to become a superhero but has been raised by villains and she's pretty clumsy, so people die all around her when she's engaged in something. Really funny!
The Cicero triology by Robert Harris was the best in the pille. I became obsessed with the books, haha. I thought they were so freaking good.
