Årets bokrea har ju som bekant dragit igång och jag kollade igenom den men hittade inget av intresse. Tyckte utbudet var rätt kasst faktiskt, i alla fall på de ställen jag orkade titta på. Det här stoppade ju dock inte mig från att köpa böcker, men inte till reapris, haha. Det var dock ett tag sen jag gjorde ett större inköp böcker så det kändes skönt att få göra. Min bokhylla med olästa böcker är rejält påfylld nu.
Jag är så taggad på att få läsa dem allihopa, även om det kommer dröja ett tag innan de blir det.

Hur har det gått för er under bokrean och har ni läst några av böckerna nedan?

The annual book sale (in Sweden) is on and I've looked it through but I didn't find anything of interest. I thought that the supply of books was pretty bad, at least where I had the energy to look. This didn't stop me from buying books though, just not for a cheaper price, haha. It was, however, some time ago I ordered this many books so it felt nice doing it again. My bookshelf of unread books is fully stacked now. I'm really excited about reading them all, even though it will take a while before they will be read.

A Court of Frost and Starlight.

Handling: Efter kriget med Hybern och alla händelser relaterat till "Under berget" lever Feyre ett stillsamt liv tillsammans med Rhys. De gör sig redo för midvintersolståndet som är en högtid i Velaris. Alla kämpar med efterdyningarna av kriget, trauman och psykiska men och det är dags för förändringar, något som dock kan vara svårt att få till.

Min åsikt om boken: Detta är en kort liten bok om vardagslivet för Feyre och hennes nära och kära. De lider av minnen och drömmar från det de tidigare var med om men biter ihop och försöker kämpa på. När högtiden närmar sig får de annat att fokusera på, bland annat att köpa presenter, laga och äta god mat samt umgås. Om jag minns rätt tror jag det var fansen som ville ha en bok som denna, där man får följa karaktärerna lite mer i vardagen utan att stora händelser sker. Samtidigt har jag för mig att boken inte togs väl emot, så jag vet inte riktigt vad syftet med den var. Jag tycker dock att Maas senare böcker har dragit lite åt "tantsnusk"-hållet. Det är väldigt mycket sexscener och de är beskrivna i detalj, vilket ibland kan kännas lite för mycket. Men det beror väl samtidigt på vad man tycker om sånt. Hennes karaktärer brukar rent generellt vara ganska passionerade.
Boken var helt ok, inte jättespännande men inte dålig heller. Om man vill återvända till den här världen utan att läsa om de 3 första böckerna så passar ju  den här boken bra.

Story: After the war with Hybern and all the events "Under the mountain" Feyre is living a quite life with Rhys. They're getting ready for the Winter Solstice, which is a huge celebration in Velaris. Everyone is fighting the aftermath of the war, traumas and mental scars and it's time for change, something that's hard to get in motion.

My opinion about the book: This is a short little book about everyday life for Feyre and her close ones. They all suffer from memories and dreams about their past experience but tries to get past it. When the holiday is getting close they have something else to focus on, like getting presents, cook and eat fancy dinners and hang out. If I remember correctly the fans wanted a book like this one, where you get to follow the characters more in their every day life but without major events happening. At the same time I think I do recall the book not being well recieved, so I don't know what the purpose of the book really was. I do think that Maas's books have taken a turn toward smut. There are a lot of sex scenes and they're described in detail, which can get a bit too much at times. I guess it comes down to what you think about that. Her characters tend to be pretty passionate.
The book was alright, not very suspenseful but not bad either. If you want to return to this world without rereading the first three books then this book is perfect.

Svindlande höjder/Wuthering heights.

Handling: När herr Earnshaw kommer hem till Wuthering Heights från en mindre resa har han ett hittebarn med sig, Heathcliff. Barnen i huset ha delade åsikter om det hela, Hindley är inte glad utan gör allt för att förpesta livet för Heathcliff medan Catherine blir hans bästis.
Tiden går och missförstånd uppstår. Catherine gifter sig med en granne och vän efter att Heathcliff har försvunnit. Vid hans återkomst är hämnd allt han tänker på.

Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken är en del av min "klassikerutmaning" för året. Jag ska försöka läsa ett par klassiker under året bara för att ha läst några. Jag har sedan tidigare läst både Dorian Gray av Oscar Wilde och Den gudomlige komedin av Dante Aligheri och var väl lagom imponerad... Jag är skeptisk till klassiker rent generellt så hade inte höga förväntningar på Svindlande höjder men den var bättre än jag trodde! Ibland var den t.o.m. lite underhållande, vilket jag inte alls hade förväntat mig. Jag läste förordet till boken också, där det stod att boken var en sorts metafor för den gyllene buren kvinnorna sattes i under 1800-talet och att människan inte är hela utan sin manliga och kvinnliga sidor. Nåt åt det hållet i alla fall. Jag kan inte påstå att det var nåt som tydligt stod ut i boken för min del. Jag kan inte säga att jag gjorde den tolkningen över huvud taget, så det var ju lite intressant. Det jag fick från boken var egentligen ett flertal manipulativa personer med stort ego som kanske inte hade förmåga till empati men också naivitet. Att man gjorde nästan allt för att få sin vilja fram, vilket i slutändan kan straffa sig. Men också att man inte blir lyckligare av att omge sig av olyckliga människor, speciellt inte om man är orsaken till deras olycka. Jag tyckte boken var riktigt bra och blev glatt överraskad av en sån underhållande klassiker!
Citatet jag har valt är från början av boken när hyresgästen kommer för att prata med mr Heathcliff och alla i huset beter sig som tokar. Ingen har vett att bete sig, vilket var väldigt underhållande att läsa.

Story: When mr Earnshaw comes home to Wuthering Heights from a small trip he has a foundling with him, Heathcliff. The children of the house has divided opinions about it, Hindley is not happy and is making Heathcliff's life miserable as much as he can while Catherine becomes his best friend.
Times passes and misunderstandings happen. Catherine marries a neighbour and friend after Heathcliff has gone missing. All he can think about, when he returns, is revenge.

My opinion about the book: This book is part of my "classics challenge" for the year. I'll try to read a couple of classics during the year just to have read some. I've already read both Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and The divine comedy by Dante Aligheri and was not that impressed... I'm sceptical to classics in general so I didn't have high expectations on Wuthering heights but it was better than I thought! It was even entertaining at times, which I had not expected at all. I read the intro to the book also, where it said that the plot was some kind of metaphor for the gilded cage women were put in during the 1800's and that humans are not whole without their masculine and feminine side. Or something along that line. I can't say that was something that distinctly stood out in the book for me. I can't even say I did that interpretation at all, so that's was a bit interesting. What I got from the book was several manipulative people with big egos, that might not have the ability to feel empathy but also that they were naive. That they did pretty much anything to get what they wanted, which came back to bite them in the butt in the end. But also that you can't feel happiness with unhappy people around you, especially if you're the cause of that unhappiness. I thought the book was good and was pleasently surprised by such an entertaining classic!
The quote I chose is from the beginning of the book when the tenant comes to talk to mr Heathcliff and everyone in the house acts like lunatics. No one can behave normally, which is entertaining to read about.

The Witcher - Time of Contempt

Handling: Ciri och Yennefer är ute på resande fot medan Geralt gör det han brukar, döda monster för pengar. Flera riken är på jakt efter Ciri, då hon är arvtagerskan till Cintra och de vill henne inget gott. Hon måste därför dölja sin rätta identitet och göra som Yennefer säger, vilket är mycket lättare sagt än gjort. Yennefers plan är att lämna Ciri i tryggt förvar på en skola för kvinnliga magiker, men innan dess är det bal med pompa och ståt för rikenas alla magiker.
Snart uppdagas dock konspirationer, vilket i sin tur leder till kaos och död. Vänner bli fiender och för att överleva måste Ciri fly. Men var ska hon ta vägen?

Min åsikt om boken: Det är nog ingen hemlighet att jag gillade The Witcher-serien på Netflix och böckerna är inte sämre på nåt sätt! Man vet aldrig vad som ska hända eller vad för spännande information som kommer fram om en viss karaktär osv. Boken var spännande och flöt på från första sidan. Det var bara en scen i mitten/slutet som drog ut lite väl långt för min smak, där blev det lite segt men annars förflöt det på ordentligt.
Jag gillar hur Ciri porträtteras, hon är viljestark, smart och vill gå sin egen väg men samtidigt är hon lite naiv, för det är så mycket om omvärlden som hon inte vet nåt om. Eftersom hon är en ung tonårstjej på runt 13 år är det väldigt passande att hon är sån. Geralt är ju en favorit, men det säger ju sig självt, haha. Barden Dandelion gillar jag också, för han känns lagom spejsad med sina dikter och musikstycken. Den enda jag är lite tveksam till är Yennefer. Hon kan vara väldigt lynnig och lite elak ibland, helt utan orsak. Man vet inte riktigt varför hon är sån, vilket gör en nyfiken. Men samtidigt är hon både smart och kraftfull, så man kan inte ogilla henne helt heller. Hur som, en mycket bra bok och jag kan knapp bärga mig tills jag har läst ut hela serien!

Story: Ciri and Yennefer are out traveling while Geralt does what he usually do; kill monsters for money. Several kingdoms are on the hunt for Ciris, since she's the heiress to Cintra and they don't mean her well. She must therefore hide her identity and do what Yennefer says, which is alot easier said than done. Yennefer's plan is to leave Ciri, safe and sound, at a school for enchantresses, but before that there's a ball with great ceremony för all the magicians in the kindoms.
Conspiracies are soon revealed, which leads to chaos and death. Friends become enemies and to survive Ciri must flee. But where should she go?

My opinion about the book: It's no secret that I liked The Witcher series on Netflix and the books are great as well! You never know what's coming or what kind of intriguing information will be revealed about a certain character and so on. The book is suspenseful and had a nice flow from the start. There was just one scene that was kind of stretched out a bit too long for my taste, it became a bit tardy but other than the pace was the same.
I like how Ciri is portrayed, because she's headstrong, smart and wants to go her own way but at the same time she's a bit naive, since there's a lot about the world she doesn't know. But since she's a young teenage girl around 13 years old I think it's fitting. Geralt is a favorite, of course, haha. I also like the bard Dandelion, because he's a bit "out there" with his poems and music. The only one I'm a bit hesitant towards is Yennefer. She can be very moody and a bit mean at times without reason. You don't know exactly why she's like that, but that also makes you more curious. She's also smart and very powerful, so you can't just dislike her through and through. Anyway, a very good book and I can hardly wait until I've finished the entire series!

Spegeln och ljuset /The mirror and the light.

Handling: Thomas Cromwell jobbar hårt för att göra kung Henrik nöjd, men det är svårt eftersom han är lättpåverkad och lynnig. Cromwells fiender gör allt de kan för att kungen ska överge honom men än så länge står han högt i kurs hos Henrik. Men efter ännu ett misslyckat äktenskap verkar Cromwells stjärna dala och det är väldigt olycksbådande.

Min åsikt om boken: Den här tegelstenen har jag läst varje kväll i över 2 månader. Det går knappast att bära med sig den nånstans så den har fått bli en del av min kvällsrutin. Jag tyckte mycket om Wolf Hall, det minns jag, men jag vet inte vad jag tyckte om För in de döda. Är de skrivna på samma sätt som den här? För jag tyckte den här boken var så lång, seg och intetsägande. Det var så mycket inre monologer, konstiga metaforer och massa minnen som inte tillförde nånting. Jag tyckte också att handlingen var otydlig. Det kunde vara 5 män i samma rum och det stod "Han sa" och "Då sa han", men vem är vem? Det var bara en massa "han", så det blev jätteotydligt. Eller är det jag som är för ouppmärksam? Jag fick läsa om vissa meningar flera gånger för att fatta. Boken kändes onödigt lång. Den hade kunnat kortas ner med minst 200-300 sidor, speciellt om man tog bort alla onödiga metaforer och tankar som inte tillförde nåt. Eller så hade boken kunnat delas upp. Tyckte det var ett lite överdrivet slut på serien. Så mycket ord men så lite som blir sagt. Något av en besvikelse faktiskt. Jag var så glad när boken äntligen var slut.

Story: Thomas Cromwell works hard to make king Henry pleased, but it's hard since he's so suggestible and moody. Cromwell's enemies are doing whatever they can to make the king abandon him but so far he's still standing strong with Henry. But after yet another failed marriage Cromwell's star seems to be falling and that is very misfortunate.

My opinion about the book: I read this brick of a book every night for over 2 months. You can't carry it around with you so it has become a part of my nightly routine. I really liked Wolf Hall, I do remember that, but I don't remember what I thought about Bring up the bodies. Are they written the same way as this one? Because I thought this book was so long, slow and bland. So many inner monologues, weird metaphores and memories that didn't bring anything to the story. I also thought the plot was vague. There could be like 5 men in the room and in the text it said "He said" and "Then he said", but who is who? It was just a bunch of "he", very confusing. Or am I not paying enough attention? I had to reread certain sentences several times to get it. The book fel uncesessarily long. It could have been shortened with atleast 200-300 pages, especially if they removed all the metaphores and thoughts that didn't bring anything to the story. Or split the book up. It felt like an excessive end to the series. So many words but nothing was said. A bit of a disappointment actually. I was happy when the book was finally over.

Emperor of the Eight Islands - The tale of Shikanoko.

Handling: När kejsaren avlider slåss två sidor om att sätta sin företrädare på tronen och krig utbryter. Makten förskjuts fram och tillbaka medan folk runt omkring dör av svält, naturkatastrofer eller blir hemlösa. Shikanoko är en klanledares son, men efter att hans farbror tagit makten över klanen är Shikanoko hemlös . Han blir omhändertagen av en mystisk magiker i Darkwood och med ens förändras hans liv för alltid. Från hemlöshet och maktlöshet befinner han sig plötsligt mitt i maktens centrum, men det är farliga krafter han har att göra med. Om han inte passar sig kan han få mäktiga fiender mot sig. Med sin egen magi låter han samvetet guida honom mot det som rätt och riktigt.

Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken är så svår att beskriva utan att avslöja väldigt mycket, så jag fick medvetet göra den rätt... tråkig eller vad man ska säga, haha. Det är så många karaktärer med i boken så det är omöjligt att ge en utförlig beskrivning, för det är så många band och händelser som knyter ihop personerna. Jag hade nästan kunnat skriva en bok om den här boken, haha.
Hur som, boken är en sorts blandning av japansk historia blandat med magi, övernaturliga eller mekaniska varelser, spöken och jag vet inte allt. Den var riktigt bra och spännande! Trots att det är många karaktärer att hålla koll på blir det inte svårt att hålla isär dem, man lär sig till slut vem som är vem och vem som tillhör vilken klan osv. Jag gillade hur Shikanoko porträtterades. Han var inte den typiska machomannen och de kvinnliga karaktärerna, t.ex. Aki och Hina var inte heller klassiskt porträtterade som mesiga/viljesvaga offer. Tack och lov. Varje karaktär har sina styrkor och svagheter men är så skickligt porträtterade! Det kändes trovärdigt hela tiden. Det enda negativa är väl som vanligt det eviga övergreppen som alltid måste vara med och som alltid bara kan hända kvinnliga karaktärer. Det är lite tröttsamt. Varför måste det alltid vara med? Visst, krig innehåller väldigt mycket övergrepp rent generellt men man MÅSTE inte ta med det. Det finns så mycket annat i liknande böcker som är så osannolika att man kan hoppa över övergreppen.

Förutom det tyckte jag väldigt mycket om boken. Den är spännande, originell och oförutsägbar. Den innehåller verkligen allt från krig, politik, intriger och kärlek till hämnd, magiska riter, andar och halvdemoner. Ser verkligen fram emot att läsa uppföljaren (om jag kan hitta den nånstans i samma upplaga).

Story: When the emperor dies two sides fight to put their predecessor on the throne and then the war begins. The power shifts back and forth while people dies of starvation, natural disasters or are homeless. Shikanoko is the son of a clan leader but after his uncle took the power over the clan Shikanoko is homeless. He's taken care of by a mysterious magician in the Darkwood and just like that his life changes forever. From homelessness and powerlessness he's suddenly in the middle of the center of power, but he's playing with dark forces. If he's not careful he might get some very mighty enemies against him. With his own magic he lets his conscience guide him towards what is true and real.

My opinion about the book: This book is so hard to describe without revealing too much, so I had to make the description pretty... boring or whatever, haha. There are so many characters in the book so it's impossible to give and accurate and detailed description, because there are so many ties and events that connect the people. I could probably write a book about this book, haha.
Anyway, this book is kind of a mix between japanese history and magic, supernatural or mechanical beings, ghosts and so on. It was really good and very suspenseful! Even though there are many characters to keep track of it's never hard to keep them aparat. Eventually you get the hang of who's who and who belongs to which cland and so on. I liked how Shikanoko was potrayed. He wasn't the typical macho man and the female characters, like Aki and Hina weren't the classicly portrayed as weak and weak-willed victims. Thank the gods! Each character had their strenghts and weaknesses but were so skillfully potrayed. It felt believable all the way. The only negative would probably be the abuse that is always present for some reason and that always only happens to female characters. It's a bit tiresome. Why must that always be included? Sure, in war a lot of abuse happens in general but it's not mandatory to include. There are so much else in books like this one that are so unreal that you can skip the abuse all together.

Except that I really liked the book. It's suspenseful, original and unpredictable. It has everything from war, politics, intrigues and love to revenge, magical rites, spirits and half demons. I really look forward to read the sequel (if I can find it somewhere with the same cover).

Alla lästa böcker i januari/All the books I read in January

I januari blev det en helt del läst faktiskt. Av någon anledning blev det väldigt lugnt på jobbet. Eftersom det är pandemi sker de flesta läkarbesök via telefon eller videomöte, så läkarna hinner med fler besök och dikterar därför mer och så har det varit i cirka 1 år. Vi har haft en hel del att göra. Men i januari så sjönk antalet diktat markant. På hela mottagningen (cirka 5 st) brukar vi ha mellan 800-1000 diktat eller mer. Bara på min mottagning sker cirka 2600 läkarbesök per år och det är en liten mottagning. Hur som, plötsligt var vi nere på 250 diktat! Vissa sekreterare hade inget att göra alls. I början av veckan var vi nere på 206 diktat. Så jag har hunnit läsa en hel del! Det blev hela 8 böcker lästa. Jag brukar ligga på 6 böcker/månad vanligtvis.
De bästa i högen var definitivt "Echo North" och "Dracula - myt och verklighet". Riktigt bra böcker!

Hur var er läsmånad och har ni läst nån av böckerna nedan?

In January I read a lot actually. For some reason it's pretty slow at work. Because of the pandemic most doctor's appointment are done over telephone or video calls, so the doctors have the time to see more patients and therefore dictates more and it's been like that for almost a year. We've had stuff to do. But in January the amount of dictations just sank. We have 5 different receptions in our clinic and we usually have like 800-1000 dictations or more. My reception have like 2600 doctor's appointments per year and it's a small reception. Anyway, all the sudden we were down to 250 dictations! Some secretaries had nothing to do at all. In the beginning of the week we were down to 206 dictations. So I've had the time to read a lot. It came down to 8 books in total this months. I normally read 6 books/month.
The best one in the pile was "Echo North" and "Dracula - myt och verklighet" (Dracula - myth and reality). Really good books!

Handling: Alina är föräldralös och växte upp hos en adlig herre som gjorde om sitt gods till ett barnhem. Tillsammans med sin bästa vän Mal tog hon sig igenom en väldigt jobbig barndom kantat av krig och förlust. De växer upp och går med i armén. Alina blir kartritare och Mal en spårare.
En dag ska de genomföra en livsfarlig resa och det går precis som Alina tänkt sig, fast ändå inte. När Mals liv hotas händer något spektakulärt, vilket för Alina långt bort ifrån armén och rikets gränsen. Istället hamnar hon mitt i hovets alla intriger tillsammans med grishor, människor med diverse magiska krafter. Det är svårt att veta vem man ska lita på och vad som är rätt eller fel. De hon trodde ville henne väl verkar istället vilja utnyttja henne. Men rikets existens hänger på Alina och att hon fattar rätt beslut...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag brukar inte läsa om böcker, men eftersom det kommer en Netflixserie baserad på den här serien och Six of Crows, fick jag ändå läsa om Grisha-böckerna. Jag minns nämligen ingenting om dem, haha. Jag tycker dock att boken var bra. Det flyter på bra hela tiden och spänningen håller en stabil nivå rakt igenom. Skuggmästaren är en tvivelaktig figur som man i början är misstänksam mot men samtidigt så verkar han ju ändå bra. Jag gillar Alina och Mals vänskap, den känns väldigt stark och fin. Jag har sett att folk är lite less på det eviga kärleksinslagen i fantasy och jag kan förstå det. Varför måste det alltid finnas ett kärleksintresse med? Men jag tycker ändå att det passar in här, för det fyller ett syfte. Känslorna spretar och gör Alina osäker. Vem kan hon lita på? Så just den biten finns inte bara för att, den känns inte onödig.
Jag gillar också biten med Skuggsänkan. Jag vill veta mer om hur den uppstod och var den kommer ifrån. Vad består mörkret av egentligen? Jag har gillat Bardugo ett bra tag och det var skönt att få det bekräftat igen, att hon skriver bra böcker som håller flera år senare! Detta var också den sista boken jag hann läsa ut i januari.

Story: Alina is an orphan and grew up in the house of a noble man who made his home an orphanage. Together with her best friend Mal she endures a very harsh childhood affected by war and loss. They grow up and joins the army. Alina becomes a cartographer and Mal a tracker.
One day they're going on a very dangerous journey and it goes exactly like Alina suspected, but with a twist. When Mal's life is threatened something spectacular happens, which takes Alina far away from the army and the borders of the kingdom. Instead she ends up in the middle of the intrigues of the court with grishas, people with different magical abilities. It's hard to know who to trust and what is right or wrong. Those she thought only wanted the best for her seem to want to use her for their own gain. But the existence of the kingdom is on Alina's shoulders and she must make the right choice.

My opinion about the book: I usually don't reread books but since there's a Netflix series coming based on this series and Six of Crows, I guess I had to reread the Grisha books because I remember nothing from them. I think the book is good though. It has a nice and persistent flow through out and the suspense is at a stable level all the time. The shadow master (uncertain if that's the english word used in the book, since I've only read the translated version) is a dubious figure that you're suspicious of in the beginning but at the same time he seems nice. I like Alina and Mal's friendship, it felt strong and nice. I've seen that some people are a bit tired of the constant love elements in fantasy and I can understand that. Why must there always be a love interest? But I think it fits the story in this case because it has a purpose. Feelings all over the place which makes Alina uncertain. Who can she trust? So that isn't just in the book because of love, it does has a purpose.
I also like the bit with the Shadow folk. I want to know more about how it emerged and where it came from. What does the darkness consist of? I've liked Bardugo for quite a while and it was nice to confirm that opinion once again, that she writes good books that can withstand time! This was also the last book I read in january.
