Handling: Isabella är dotter till kung Johan II (Juan II) av Kastilien och drottning Isabella av Portugal. När Isabella bara är 3 år gammal dör kungen och hon tvingas fly tillsammans med sin mamma och lillebror Alfonso, i rädsla för att kung Johans son Henry (Enrique IV) från hans första äktenskap, ska skada familjen i samband med att han beträder tronen. Isabella växer upp i ett lantligt slott med en psykiskt ostabil mor i ett slitet och dragit slott med få tjänare, men hon lider inte av det. Tillsammans med sin bästa vän Beatrix njuter hon av livet.
Men en vacker dag blir de kallade till hovet. Deras halvbror Henry vill ha dem nära sig och det är inte utan viss bävan att de båda syskonen reser dit, för en kung kan man inte neka någonting. Vid hovet blir det lite av en kulturkrock mellan de yngre, religiösa syskonen och den äldre och omoraliska halvbrodern. Intriger och ryktesspridning är ständigt närvarande och utan att kunna spelet är det svårt att leva mitt i centrum av ett kungligt hov. Men Isabella är viljestark och envis, henne kan man inte göra vad man vill med.
När krig hotar måste Isabella snabbt lära sig spelreglerna och försöka behålla huvudet på sina axlar, speciellt när kungen inte är särskilt frisk i sinnet.
Min åsikt om boken: Jag gillar historiska romaner och biografier, men har oftast upplevt dem som lite stela om de är skrivna av män. Just inom genrer historiska romaner brukar kvinnor vara väldigt duktiga på att skriva bra och intressanta böcker. Men här kommer en man som verkligen briljerar när det gäller att gestalta både en ung flicka och en vuxen kvinna, utan att för den delen göra karaktären för oskyldig eller depraverad. Här möts man av en komplex huvudkaraktär som å ena sidan vill göra gott och stå upp för det som är rätt, men som samtidigt måste försöka hålla sig väl med alla runt omkring sig och hela tiden tänka på vad hennes Gud vill att hon ska göra. Jag tyckte väldigt mycket om boken och hade svårt att lägga ner den. Allt var verkligen intressant, oavsett om det utspelade sig i det lantliga och lugna slottet eller mitt bland intrigmakare inom det kungliga hovet. Det märks att författaren har lagt mycket tid på sin research och är kunnig, men utan att faktabitarna tar över allt för mycket. Det var ett härligt och jämnt flyt hela vägen. Riktigt bra! Måste definitivt läsa författarens andra böcker.
Sedan skadar det inte heller att Isabella av Kastilien var en intressant person överlag. Det är tack vare henne som Inkvisitionen spred skräck i Europa men också tack vare henne som kvinnor redan på 1500-talet kunde studera och undervisa vid vissa universitet. Så detta var en väldigt komplex person. Kan även säga att hennes ena dotter var den ökände Henry VIII's första fru. Vill man läsa mer om Isabella kan man göra det här!

Story: Isabella is the daughter of king John II (Juan II) of Castile and queen Isabella of Portugal. When Isabella is only 3 years old the king dies and she is forced to flee together with her mother and little brother Alfonso, out of fear that king John's first son Henry (Enrique IV) from his first marriage, will hurt them when he ascends the throne. Isabella grows up in a rural castle with a mentally instable mother in a dreary and worn down castle with few servants, but the's not complaining. Together with her best friend Beatrix life is pretty good.
But one day they are summoned to the royal court. Their half brother Henry wants them close to him and it's not without some trepidation they travel there, because you cannot deny a king anything. At the court there's a bit of a culture clash between the younger and religious siblings and their older and immoral half brother. Intrigues and rumors are always close by and without knowing how to play the game it's hard to live in the center of a royal court. But Isabella is strong-willed and stubborn, you can't do whatever you want with her.
When war is not far away Isabella is forced to quickly learn the rules of the game and try to keep her head on her shoulders, especially when the king is not particularly sane.
My opinion of the book: I like historical fiction and biographies, but I often feel like they can be a bit stiff if they've been written by men. In the genre historical fiction it's usually women who are really great at writing really good and interesting books. But here's a man that's really a shining example when it comes to making a (female) character very interesting without making her too innocent or too deprived. Here's a complex main character that on one hand wants to do good and stand up for what is right but on the other hand has to deal with those around her and keep them happy, while also think about what her God wants of her at al times. I really liked the book and had a hard time putting it down. Everything was interesting, no matter if it took place in the rural castle or in the middle of all the intrigue makers in the royal court. It shows that the author did his research and knows alot, but without the facts taking over too much. It had a lovely and even flow through out the whole book. Really good! I must definitely read the author's other books.
It does no harm either that Isabella of Castile was such an interesting person over all. It's thanks to her that the Inquisition spread fear through out Europe but it's also thanks to her that women during the 1500's could study and teach at certain universities. So this is a very complex person. I can also say that one of her daughters became the infamous Henry VII's first wife. If you want to read more about Isabella you can do so here!
