The Unspoken Name

Serie/Series: Ja, del 1/Yes, part 1.
Författare/Author: A.K. Larkwood.
Genre: Fantasy, science fiction.
Språk/Language: Engelska/English.
Sidor/Pages: 557.

(English below)

My favorite quote from the book:

"Csorwe wondered whether it was strange how little she knew about her homeland. She had never visited Torosad or any of the great cities of Oshaar. Nor did she want to, but it was odd that her tusks marked her to the whole world as Oshaaru, when in fact she had seen less of the country than Sethennai had."

Story: Csorwe grew up in a death cult and on her 14th birthday she is to climb a mountain, to "The Unspoken One", a death god and sacrifice herself to it. When the day comes Csorwe gets ready and heads up the mountain. But when she gets there a magician gives her a coice - stay and die or leave the place with him and get a new life. Csorwe chooses to run from her fate to become the magician's thief, spy and assassin. Together they can conquer empires. But gods never forget, something Csorwe soon realises. Friends turn to traitors and all debts must be payed in the end...

My opinion about the book: This book reminds me of Gideon the Ninth to some extent, but without all the big and weird words. Bith books contain different kinds of houses with different gods and/or magic, space ships, queer characters and so on. This book is more towards fantasy compared to Gideon. There are orchs, elves (as I interpreted them as), the traditional kind of magic and so on. I first thought The Unspoken Name was very suspenseful and easily read. I guess it was a bit towards the end that it got a bit slow. When Csorwe was going to save someone (wont say who) it took a long while before she came to that conclusion. Before then she was very indecisive, which slowed the plot down a lot. Then, when she's finally out to rescue the person it doesn't go well and she must once again come up with a plan to save the person, a second time. So it became repetitive and slow in the end. An unnecessarily cumbersome ending according to me. I also was a bit contemplative about the character Talasseres, what was his purpose? Besides being annoying. Was he just there for the sharp-tongued dialogue? He didn't bring much to the story other than sarcasm, which can be fun as long as that's not the only purpose, because that makes it feel pointless.
So around 2/3 of the book was really good, even if certain things were unspoken. It's not said that Csorwe is an orch, but it's hinted because of her tusks and I didn't quite grasp how the "maze gates" worked. Sometimes the ships were floating like in space, but they could breathe as usual and there were normal environments outside the ships. So a bit unclear how that worked. Did they go into a labyrinth from one gate to another or how did it work?
Overall the book was alright and I thought it was good but I would have wanted more clarification about how things worked.

I give it 3.5 of 5💀

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf.

(English below)

Le Husband wanted to visit Akademibokhandel again and well... you know how that usually ends. Anyway, I looked around and found a couple of books. I think I had like 5 books in my arms at one point but I narrowed it down to 2. One is a non fiction book  and one is acctually a scifi book! I don't think I've ever read a "pure" scifi book ever, so we'll see if it's my cup of tea or not.

The seven wonders of Antiquity (this is a translation from swedish, it doesn't seem to have an english title) is about just what the title says. It's about what the wonders were, if they have existed or not, what's left and why they were built. Sounds really interesting to me!

Red Rising is about a young miner in an underground colony on Mars. They drill for helium-3 which makes the surface habitable. It's the last hope for humanity. At least that's what they are told...
Life on Mars is harsh and hierarchically, the Golds rule and live in luxury and abundance. When Darrow understans that the Reds are enslaved the red is rising. Together with a group of rebels Darrow manages to change identity and even his looks and become an Gold - with the intention to infiltrate the Academy where future leaders are educated, in the hopes of destroying the system from withing.
I really fell for this book based on the summary. It sounds very interesting and exciting!

Have you read any of the books?

Story: Winston Smith lives in the dictatorship Oceania, in airstrip One, previously known as Great Britain. Oceania is ruled by the leader Big Brother, his face is everywhere. The party ENGSOSS rules Oceania with an iron fist and is not afraid of changing both the past and the future. Winston works at the "Ministry of Truth", whose sole purpose is to change recent "inaccuracies" in publications. ENGSOSS can never be wrong.
But Winston is not happy with life. He doubts the dictatorship and is convinced that people used to live differently in the past, but it's hardly anything he remembers. There are no traces of other ways of living in books, since ENGSOSS erases and changes everything that is not in line with their motto: War is peace, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strenght. If you're not careful you can simply disappear, either to a slave colony or down the grave. You need to keep your body and soul in check, because you're watched all the time, everywhere, 24/7...

My opinion about the book: This is yet another book in my "classics challenge". In the beginning I thought the book was pretty exciting with all the new stuff. It was also fun that the author invented a new language "Newspeak", that the party wanted everyone to speak and write. The goal with it was to give people less words to use and by that control their thoughts and perception of reality. If there are no words to use to describe what you feel and think you can't express it.
But then I thought the story slowed down a lot. Not much happened and it didn't feel like the characters had any depth. Sometimes the characters exchanged words or meanings without it being expressed, which made it hard for me to understand. There was also a scene where Winston, for some reason, gets mad/hateful towards an unknown woman he dosn't know at all and he wants to rape her, among other things. I really didn't understand why? I didn't get the purpose of it either.
Over all the book was alright but I've read better. I was, however, impressed by the technology that is described in the book considering it came out in 1949.

I give it 2 of 5💀

My favorite quote from the book (my own translation):

"Don't you understand that the whole purpose of newspeak is to restrict the thought possibilities? We will eventually make thoughtcrime litterally impossible, because there will not exist words to express it with."

Vem var egentligen "The Sleeper" och "The Body"?

"When you had asked Mercymorn outright for her House name, she had simply stared at you with disgusted astonishment, as though you were a turd who had learned to dance, and then said, 'Go away!'"
-Sid 176.

" 'Mystery on mystery', was all she said. And then: 'How I hate seeing you in her face.'
'You've got two short minutes left before I punch you right in the butthole,' I said.
'Follow me. We haven't got much time - quite apart from yout hurtful threats of sexual violence,' she said. 'Why, yout fist is so big, and my butthole so small.'
'Just move, Tridentarius! I'm not ready to laugh at your goddamn jokes!' "

Story: Harrowhark survived Caanan House and is now a "lyctor" in the service of the Undead emperor. Her job is to kill planets and fight against "Resurection Beasts" that are out to kill them all. But something is not right. Harrow is changed but she doesn't know why. Mysterious notes written by herself show up and she seems to hallucinate. What is real and what is pure fantasy?

My opinion about the book: I've been thinking a lot about this book since I finished it last wednesday. The reason is that it's extremely special. I thought the first book was awesome so I had pretty high expectations on the sequel and it was so confusing. But I don't know it that's positive or negative? Firstly it's written in both second and third person, so it switches between the two. In the beginning I found that very annoying but I eventually got used to it. Secondly you're back in Caanan House from the first book, but with different or new (!) characters... Like what? You don't get any clues to why. I think the author wanted the reader to be confused so it could become the big reveal in the end, but it also affect the reading experience very much. How confusing can you make it without it going too far? The reader must understand what happens, otherwise the book is meaningless. So I think it's a lot up to the reader's taste, what you like and not. What is ok and not. It took half the book for me to begin appreciating the story. I would say it's 90% confusion and 10% pure entertainment. But I didn't understand the ending at all... When I thought I had it all figured out it went right out the window. Did Harrow survive? What happened to G? Who was "The Sleeper" and "The Body"? I didn't really understand how they fitted in or if they were even alive. So confusing. I do still look forward to the third book but with the hope if it being much better and less weird...

I give it a weak 3 of 5💀
