Handling: Två tvillingar till the Protector, Mokoya och Akeha, ges bort till the Grand Monastery som spädbarn i en föruppgjord deal mellan deras mor (The Protector) och abboten som tack för abbotens stöd mitt under ett uppror, men det blir inte riktigt som abboten hade tänkt sig.
Tvillingarnas mor råkar vara en sorts diktator över riket och styr landet med en järnhand. Hennes kyla och aggressiva styre leder till många missnöjda undersåtar och både Mokoya och Akhea växer upp med ett hat för sin mor.

Mokoya verkar ha fått en profetisk gåva, vilket deras mor ser som väldigt användbart medan Akeha inte har något som helst värde för henne. Men tvillingarnas kärlek för varandra håller dem samman trots allt det svåra. Men när Akeha känner sig manad att lämna allt bakom sig och ge sig ut i världen sätts tvillingarnas relation på spel.

Motståndsrörelsen växer sig större och utan att riktigt veta om det råkar Akeha sluta sig till rebellerna. Någon måste bekämpa ondskan, som också råkar vara deras egen mor.


Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken är så svår att förklara. Den innehåller typiska fantasydelar men samtidigt känns den lite futuristisk/steampunkig. Det finns något som kallas för "slackcraft" som är en sorts typ av magi antar ja
g, som kan användas för att forma både byggnader, vapen, ljus och lite allt möjligt med. Kraften används också på alla som inte ännu valt vilken könsidentitet de vill tillhöra, för att bromsa kroppens naturliga utveckling. När personen väl valt identitet genomgår man en sorts "konfirmation" och får kroppen formad så det passar identiteten. Det tyckte jag var både nytänkande och kul!
Kraften är dock lite svår att fatta, för det verkar finnas 5 olika element inom den här kraften och de kan användas ihop också, vilket inte förklarades så jättebra i boken. Så det var lite svårt att riktigt förstå hur det funkade. Men jag gillade författarens sätt att skriva och berätta på, även om det kändes lite onödigt med hoppandet i handlingen. Det kändes som att man kunde ha fått lite mer från åren som handlingen hoppade över. Överlag tycker jag dock att boken var väldigt intressant och bra, även om jag önskade lite mer tydlighet kring vissa saker som är nya för läsaren (typ som kraften och konstiga djur). Kommer definitivt att läsa 2:an också!

Story: Two twins of the Protector, Mokoya and Akeha, is given away to the Grand Monastery as infants in a predone deal between their mother (The Protector) and the Head Abbot, as thanks for the support in a upprising, but it doesn't really go as the abot thought it would.
The Twins mother happens to be a kind of dictator over the kingdom and rules the land with an iron fist. Her coldness and aggressive ruling leads to many disgruntled subjects and both Mokoya and Akeha grows up with a hatred for their mother.

Mokoya seems to have a profetic gift, which their mother sees as useful while Akeha doesn't have any value at all to her. But the twins love for each other keeps them together despite it all. But when Akeha is feeling compelled to leave it all behind and venture out into the world the relationship between the twins is at risk.

The uprising is growing and without really knowing it Akeha joins the rebels. Someone has to fight the evil, even if it happens to be their own mother.


My opinion of the book: This book is really hard to explain. It contains typical fantasy bits but at the same time it felt a bit futuristic/steampunkish. There was somoething called "slackcraft" that's a sort of magic I guess, that can be used to shape buildings, weapons, light and pretty much anything. The craft is also usued on everyone that has not yet chosen which gender they want, to kind of suspend the body's natural development. When the person has chosen a gender they go through something called "confirmation" and get their body shaped so that it fits the identity. I thought that was very original and fun! The craft is a bit hard go grasp though, because it seems to exist 5 elements within the craft that can be used together but that wasn't really fully explained in the book, so I had a hard time getting it. But I liked the author's way of writing and telling the story, even though the skipping in the story/plot felt a bit unnecessary. I'd like to have gotten som info about the years that were skipped over but over all I find the book to be interesting and good, even though I'd like to have more clarity regarding things that are new to the reader (like the craft or weird animals). I will read part 2 though!
