Handling: Prinsessan Hesinas pappa har precis gått bort och hon är övertygad om att han blev mördad. I hopp om att hitta sanningen vänder hon sig till en siare, vilka har varit förbjudna i landet sedan De Elva störtade den tidigare kejsaren för flera hundra år sedan. Likt siare är deras magi också förbjuden och det är belagt med dödsstraff att ens ta hjälp av dem. Men Hesina har inget val.
Hon driver sitt fall i domstolen med hjälp av en tidigare brottsling, en ung man vid namn Akina. Han sköter jobbet exemplariskt men bär på hemligheter.
Samtidigt som Hesina driver på fallet om hennes mördade far måste hon ta hand om ett tumultartat kungarike där faror lurar överallt, både innanför och utanför landets gränser...

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var en speciell bok som jag inte riktigt vet om jag tycker om. Den var inte dålig utan höll en röd tråd rakt igenom och höll ett lagom tempo. Jag gillar ju intriger vid hovet och liknande men ändå kändes det som att något fattades. Jag fick nog ingen riktig kontakt med karaktärerna, så det kanske är där skon klämmer. Handlingen saknade djup. När den ena hemligheten efter den andra avslöjades var det knappt att jag uppmärksammade det, utan det var mer , alltså att jag registrerade det men inte reagerade nämnvärt på det. Saknade nåt som engagerade mig lite mer på ett djupare plan. Sedan var de flesta karaktärerna väldigt unga och med det kommer osäkerhet och ambivalens. Jag har som sagt svårt för veliga personer, verkliga eller fiktiva. Det blir lite tjatigt när en person frågar sig samma sak om och om igen. Sedan tycker jag att det hela med slutet var väldigt typiskt. En lätt "väg ut", som för många författare använder sig av, t.ex. dålig kommunikation, hemlighetsmakeri och missförstånd. Det är lite tröttsamt stundtals.
Boken är som sagt inte dålig i sig, utan det hela hänger nog mer på ens smak, som så mycket annat. En helt ok bok med andra ord.

Story: Princess Hesina's father just passed and she is certain he was murdered. To find the truth she turns to a sooth, which has been forbidden in the country since the Eleven overthrew the emperor for several hundred years ago. Just like the sooths, their magic is forbidden and it's a capital offence to seek them out. But Hesina doesn't have a choice.
She takes her case to the court with the help of a criminal, a young man namned Akina. He does his job with panache but has secrets.
As Hesina is busy with her court case about her murdered father she must also take care of a tumultuous kingdom where dangers lurks everywhere, both within and outside the country's boundaries...

My opinion about the book: This was a special book that I really don't know what to think about. It wasn't bad, it had a red thread throughout and had a good pace to it. I like intrigues in courts and stuff like that, but something was missing despite that. I don't think I got any real connection with the characters, so that might be the thing. The plot lacked depth. When secrets were revealed I hardly noticed, it was more like "okey", like I registered it but didn't react that much to it. I missed something that would have engaged me more on a deeper level. Most of the characters were also pretty young and with that comes insecurity and ambivalence. I have a hard time with indecisive people, real or fictitious. It gets a bit nagging when a person is asking herself/himself the same question over and over again. I also think the end was very unimaginative. An easy "way out", like many authors use, like bad communication, secrecy and misunderstandings. It's a bit tiresome at times.
The book is not bad, as I already mentioned. I guess it comes down to preference, like with so much else. An alright book with other words.
