Handling: I en liten by i Skåne i början av 1700-talet bor den egensinniga tjejen Isabella tillsammans med sin moster Karna. De arbetar som pigor på prästgården där de även bor. Karna är en klok gumma och hjälper byborna vid födslar, skador och sjukdomar med Isabella till hjälp. Till skillnad från sin moster tror inte Isabella på gudar och magi. Hon bryr sig inte heller om att bete sig som hon bör. Istället drömmer hon sig bort från den trånga lilla byn. Hon vill fly från elaka blickar och tungor men också sitt förflutna.
Pesten härjar och krig har utarmat landet. Den spända stämningen i byn leder bara till misstankar och fler konflikter och när Isabella pekas ut som häxa känner hon sig riktigt rädd. Det brukar inte sluta bra för dem kvinnorna...

Min åsikt om boken: Jag trodde att detta skulle vara en bok om just häxor, alltså med lite magi och kanske nåt "övernaturligt" inblandat men egentligen är det en historisk roman om livet som piga och kvinna i 1700-talets Sverige. Det enda "övernaturliga" är Karnas trollformler och sätt att bota sjukdomar och skador. Det hela kändes som en dagbok skriven av en piga, vilket inte riktigt är min grej. Jag förstod inte riktigt syftet med boken. Alla böcker brukar ändå ha en grundié, något man vill förmedla men jag tyckte det saknades här. Det hände inte så värst mycket heller och jag tyckte handlingen var upprepande, lite som att man inte litade på att läsaren skulle förstå om man inte upprepade saker flera gånger. Tyvärr inte en jätteintressant bok i mina ögon. Den saknade djup och en röd tråd. Karaktärerna kändes platta och allt beskrevs på ytan. Jag fick aldrig någon riktig koppling till någon av dem eller händelserna, så jag kände mig inte speciellt engagerad. En ok bok, men inte så mycket mer än så.

Title: The book doesn't have an english title so I just translated it.

Story: In a small village in Skåne (southern Sweden) during the 1700's lives the willful girl Isabella together with her aunt Karna. They are maids at the parsonage where they also live. Karna is a cunning woman and helps the villagers with births, injuries and illnesses with the help of Isabella. Unlike her aunt Isabella doesn't believe in gods and magic. She also doesn't care about behaving the way she should. Instead she dreams about leaving the small village. She wants to escape the mean looks and talk but also her past.
The Plague is raging and war has depleted the country. The tense ambience in the village leads to suspicion and more conflicts and when Isabella is singled out as a witch she gets really scared. It usually doesn't end well for those women...

My opinion of the book: I thought this was a book about witches, i.e magic and maybe something "paranormal" involved but in reality it's a historical novel about life as a maid and a woman during the 1700's in Sweden. The only "paranormal" thing might be Karna's spells and way of healing sicknesses and injuries. It felt like a diary written by a maid, which isn't really my cup of tea. I didn't really understand the purpose of the book. Every book usually has a basic idea, something you want to convey to people but I think that's missing here. Not much happened and I feel like the story was a bit repetitive, like the author didn't trust the reader to understand what's happening unless it's told again and again. Unfortunately not a very interesting book in my opinion. It lacked depth and a red thread. The characters felt flat and the plot was thin. I never got a connection with any of the characters or the happenings, so I wasn't really engaged in the book. It was alright but not much more than that.
