Handling: Gideon Nav tillhör det Nionde huset som är väktare över Den Låsta Gravkammaren. Hon hatar det mörka och dragiga "huset", som ligger under marken på deras planet. Hon hatar också Harrowhark, arvtagaren till det Nionde huset samt de svartklädda och dödskallemålade nunnorna. Gideon är egentligen föräldralös och adopterad av huset men behandlas som en utböling. Hon har svårt att ta order och bete sig som förväntat. Det enda hon vill är att lämna både huset och planeten för gott men ödet vill något helt annat.

Harrowhark, en benhäxa, har fått en kallelse av Kejsaren för att delta i en sorts tävling, där vinnarna blir odödliga Lyctors. Men för att lyckas med det behöver Harrowhark en cavalier, en sorts lojal livvakt och Gideon är tyvärr den enda som finns att välja på. Men varken Gideon eller Harrowhark tycker om varandra. Har de ens en chans att lyckas? Gideon blir lovad att slippa livet i det Nionde huset om hon hjälper Harrow, men tävlingen går inte riktigt som de hade tänkt sig. Plötsligt dör arvtagarna av ett flertal hus och spänningen mellan de som är kvar växer. Det hela kan sluta i ett enda stort blodbad...

 

Min åsikt om boken: Den här boken är lite svår att förklara på ett bra sätt, för det är en sån salig blandning av både det ena och det andra. Det är ett rymdäventyr med nekromanter, magi, sciencefiktionteknologi, action och typ pussel. Den har verkligen allt! Det är svärdsdueller, skelettjänare, rymdskepp och jag vet inte allt. Den är oerhört underhållande, spännande och olikt något annat jag har läst. Gideon är en riktigt skön karaktär som skiter i allt, hon är sarkastisk och lite egensinnad medan Harrow är mer åt det nördiga men arroganta hållet. De försöker hålla sig ifrån varandra så mycket som möjligt men till slut inser de att de måste jobba tillsammans för att lyckas. De andra åtta husen är också intressanta, för de är alla experter på helt olika saker men har ändå något gemensamt: anatomi och döden. Ett hus är helare medan andra kan fånga själar och så vidare. Den här boken har beskrivits som ett lesbiskt rymdäventyr med nekromanter och ja, det stämmer väl lite åtminstone. Jag tyckte inte det var jättetydligt att Gideon var lesbisk, även om hon har "tuttidningar" och tycker att vissa kvinnor är attraktiva, men hon kan ju lika gärna vara bisexuell? För att beskriva boken som "gränsöverskridande" hade jag nog velat ha mer tydlighet i att Gideon verkligen är lesbisk. Inte för att det spelar någon roll i sig, men det är så boken har beskrivits och jag såg det inte så tydligt. Men det är hur som en jättebra bok, som är så annorlunda jämfört med andra böcker och handlingen är aldrig tråkig. Det händer saker hela tiden utan att det känns för mycket så att säga. Sen så är dialogerna rätt klockrena, just för att Gideon är som hon är. Hon säger bara vad hon tänker rakt ut utan att bry sig, vilket känns så befriande! Det finns många minnesvärda citat att hitta här. Helt klart en läsvärd bok!

Uppföljaren "Harrow the Ninth" släpptes i Sverige i tisdags men verkar inte finnas ute i bokhandeln ännu (har blivit försenad). Men den ska nog finnas på Adlibris, så får se hur länge jag orkar vänta på att den ska komma ut i butikerna innan jag beställer hem den. Måste ha mer av denna serie!

Story: Gideon Nav belongs to the Ninth house, which is the Keeper of the Locked Tomb. She hates the dark and dreary "house", which lies underground on their planet. She also hates Harrowhark, the Heir to the Ninth house and also the black dressed and skull painted nuns. Gideon is an orphan, adopted by the house but is treated like a pariah. She has a hard time taking orders and behave like expected. The only thing she wants is to leave the house and planet for good, but destiny has other plans.

Harrowhark, a bone with, has been summoned by the Emperor to participate in a trial, where the winners become immortal Lyctors. But to succeed Harrowhark needs a cavalier, a type of loyal bodyguard and unfortunately Gideon is the only choice. But neither Gideon nor Harrowhark like each other. Do they even have a chance to succeed? Gideon is promised a way out of the Ninth house if she helps Harrow, but the trials are not what they expected. All of the sudden heirs of other houses dies and the tension between those left is growing. It could all end in a bloodbath...

My opinion of the book: This book is a bit hard to explain in a fair way, because it's such a mix of this and that. It's a space adventure with necromantics, magic, science fiction technology, action and like puzzles. It really has everything! There's sword duels, skeleton servants, space shuttles and so on. It's very entertaining, suspenseful and unlike anything I've ever read before. Gideon is such a great character who doesn't give a shit about anything, she's sarcastic and a bit obstinate while Harrow is more nerdy but arrogant. They try to stay away from each other as much as possible but in the end they realise they need to work together to succeed. The other eight houses are also interesting, because they are experts in different areas but still has something in common: anatomy and death. One house is healers and another can trap souls and so on. This book has been described as a lesbian space adventure with necromancers and yes, that might hold some truth. I didn't think it was obvious that Gideon was a lesbian, even though she had "boob magazines" and found some women attractive, but she could have been bisexual for all I could get out of it. Not that it matters, but the book had been described as "norm breaking" because of Gideon been lesbian so I think I need more clarity on that because it wasn't that obvious.
Anyway, it's a great book, different from other books and the plot is never boring. Stuff happens all the time without it getting too much. The dialogues are also very funny and awesome because Gideon is the way she is. She just says what she thinks and doesn't care what people might think, which is very freeing! There are some very memorable quotes in this book. I highly recommend this book!

The sequel "Harrow the Ninth" was released in Sweden last tuesday but seems to not have arrived in the bookstores yet (delayed for some reason) but I think it's available at Adlibris, so we'll see how long I can wait for it to be out in the bookstores before I order it online. I need more of this series!
