Handling: Isaac bor i en liten by långt ifrån ledarnas fästning. Hans pappa är byns ledare och måste varje år resa till fästningen och betala skatt. Ledarna är ganska anonyma och det är ingen förutom byarnas ledare som fått se eller träffa dem.
En dag blir Isaacs pappa varnad av sändebud från fästningen att en svår torka snart kommer att drabba dem alla och att de borde lägga undan en viss procent av allt de producerar för att klara sig. Isaacs pappa lyssnar dock inte. Isaac har sett syner i nästan hela sitt liv, vilket pappan ogillar och kräver att han ska dölja. Snart blir han känd som "galne Isaac" och få vill ha med honom att göra. Trots att han varnar sin pappa att fästningens sändebud har rätt om torkan blir de alla ändå utan mat och tvingas hitta det på annat sätt, vilket leder dem rakt in i fördärvet.

Isaac är helt plötsligt slav i ledarnas fästning. Han ska tjäna hövdingens dotter och medstyrande, Kiatra. Med pappans ord i sitt minne försöker Isaac dölja sina syner, men det blir allt svårare ju längre tiden går. Kan han lita på Kiatra?

Kiatra å sin sida försöker visa framfötterna och inta rollen som hövding men det är svårt så länge hennes pappa lever. Att hennes halvsyster försöker sätta käppar i hjulet för henne och ta över makten hjälper inte heller, därför tycker hon det är så skönt att ha Isaac i sin närhet. Han är så enkel och ödmjuk, men hon är säker på att han döljer nåt för henne - men vad?


Min åsikt om boken: Detta är ett recensionsexemplar som jag har fått av författaren. Blev rätt snabbt intresserad av både handlingen och det snygga omslaget. Boken var riktigt bra faktiskt! Den är lättläst, spännande och den har ett visst flyt som drar tag i en. Det är aldrig tråkigt men inte heller fartfyllt utan det är en jämn takt på händelserna. Jag gillade interaktionerna mellan Kiatra och Isaac, hur de var så lika men ändå så olika och hur deras kulturer skiljde sig. Precis som vid de flesta maktcentra är det fullt av intriger i fästningen. Få gillar den position och makt som Isaac har, en enkel slav och det är många som inte är rädda för att ge sig på honom. Han måste slåss för både sitt liv och sin plats, men samtidigt tänker han på de hemma i byn. Och det här med att han döljer sina syner, det gav ännu en dimension till berättelsen som ökade på spänningen. En riktigt bra bok!
Det enda jag störde mig på lite grann i början var styckeindelningen. Den är lite off. Det är för mycket mellanrum mellan både repliker och meningar, men annars var det inget jag tyckte var dåligt. Vill väldigt gärna läsa del 2!

Story: Isaac lives in a small village far away from the leaders fortress. His father is the leader of the village and must each year travel to the fortress and pay tribute. The leaders are quite anonymous and no one but the village leaders have seen or met them.
One day Isaac's dad is warned by an emissary from the fortress about a drought on it's way and is told to save a certain percent of their produce to survive. But Isaac's dad won't listen. Isaac has had visions for almost his whole life, which is father is not fond of and is demanding of Isaac to hide. He soon becomes known as "Mad Isaac" and no one wants anything to do with him. Even though he warns his father that the emissary was right about the drought, they all end up without anything to eat and are forced to search for it elsewhere, which leads them to ruin.

Isaac is all of a sudden a slave in the fortress. He is forced to serve the chieftess Kiatra. With the words from his father in mind Isaac tries to hide his visions, but it only becomes harder the longer he's there. Can he trust Kiatra?

Kiatra on the other hand is trying to assert her authority but it's hard as long as her father is alive. That her half sister is trying to ruin her and take the power doesn't help, which is why she enjoys the company of Isaac. He's simple and humble, but she's sure he's hiding something from her - but what?


My opinion of the book: This is a review copy I got from the author. I quickly became intrested in the book and the awesome cover. The book was actually really good! It's easily read, exciting and it has a certain flow to it. It's never boring but it's not action packed either, but has a steady pace to the events. I liked the interactions between Kiatra and Isaac, how much alike they were but different at the same time and how their cultures differed. Like most centres of power the fortress if full of intrigues. Few likes the position and power that Isaac has, a simple slave and there are many who are not afraid to come after him. He must fight for his life and place but at the same time he's thinking about the people back home. And the thing with him hiding his visions only added another dimension  that elevated the story. A really good book!
The only thing I was annoyed of in the beginning was the paragraphing. It's a bit off. There's too much space between the lines and sentences, but other than that there's nothing I didn't like. Would really like to read part 2!
