Handling: I 1700-talets Paris bor syskonen Camille, Sophie och Alain i en nedgången vindsvåning. Deras föräldrar dog i en sjukdom och syskonen får klara sig på egen hand. Alain super och spelar bort det lilla han har och när hans pengar är slut tigger eller hotar han mer från sina systrar. Sophie är sjuk och bräcklig, så det är upp till Camille att se till så de överlever. Innan deras mamma gick bort fick Camille lära sig att använda magi, men det enda hon kan göra är att förvandla metallbitar till pengar, dock bara för en kort stund innan de återgår till sin rätta form. Därför måste hon gå långt ifrån sitt hem för att handla, så ingen ska komma på henne.

När Alain har stulit i princip allt systrarna äger får Camille nog och tar till förbjuden magi, trots hennes mammas varningar. Hon förvandlar sig själv till en adelskvinna och ger sig av till Versailles för att spela in stora summor pengar, så att hon aldrig mer behöver gå hungrig. Eller det är i alla fall tanken. Livet bland adeln fyller Camille med både fascination och avsmak, men så länge hon tjänar på det tänker hon fortsätta. Det dröjer dock inte länge innan andra förklädda magiker upptäcker henne och hon inser att hon spelar ett farligt spel. Om kungen får reda på att det finns magiker i närheten kan allt sluta med att Camille får sätta livet till...


Min åsikt om boken: Detta var en rätt mysig bok överlag. Jag tyckte dock att början var väldigt seg, så det tog ett tag att komma in i boken. Den första tredjedelen var mest text efter text, knappt några dialoger alls och det blir tröttsamt i längden men så fort dialogerna kom så blev det med ens lättare att komma in i boken. Två tredjedelar av boken flöt på bra och jag tyckte det blev riktigt spännande. Hade faktiskt svårt att lägga ifrån mig boken ett tag! Jag gillade karaktärerna och de historiska händelserna som författaren vävt in vid sidan av magi och andra fantasydetaljer. Både Camille och Sophie var intressanta och jag gillade deras systerrelation. Så med andra ord var boken helt ok. Om man orkar ta sig igenom den sega början så blir boken helt klart värd mödan!

Story: In Paris during the 1700's lives Camille, Sophie and Alain in a shabby attic flat. Their parents died of a disease and the siblings are on their own. Alain is drinking and gambling the little he has and when his money are gone he begs or threathen his sisters for more. Sophie is sick and frail, so it's up to Camille to make sure they survive. Before their mother died she taught Camille how to use magic, but the only thing Camille can do is to turn scraps of metal into coins and only for a short period of time before they turn back to their original form. That's why she has to walk a long way from home to shop so no one detects her fraud.
When Alain finally steals everything they own Camille has had enough and turns to forbidden magic, despite her mother's warnings. She turns herself into a noble woman and heads off to Versailles to gamble and win a lot of money, so she doesn't have to go hungry any longer. Or that's her plan at least. Life amongst the noble is both fascinating and disgusting to Camille, but as long as she gains something from it she'll continue. But it doesn't take long before magicians in disguise discovers her and she realises she's playing a dangerous game. If the king were to find out that there are magicians close by it might end with Camille's life on the line....

My opinion of the book: This was a cosy book over all. I did however think the beginning was so very slow, so it took me some time to get into the book. A third of the book was just text upon text, hardly any dialogues and that's pretty tiresome but as soon as the dialogues came it was so much easier to get into the story. I actually had a hard time putting the book down! I liked the chatacters and the historical events that the author weaved together with magic and other fantasy parts. Both Camille and Sophie were interesting and I liked their sisterhood. So with other words; the book was fine. If you can manage the slow beginning the book will be worth the hazzle!
