Handling: Herbie Lemon jobbar på avdelningen för försvunna saker på Grand Nautilus Hotell och hans uppgift är att ta emot kvarglömda saker av hotellets gäster, bokföra dem och försöka hitta ägarna. Han har varit där så länge han kan minnas och då är han ändå bara 12 år.
En dag ramlar en jämngammal flicka in genom källarfönstret ner i Herbies lilla vrå med en läskig sjöman som jagar henne. Hon ber Herbie att gömma och innan han vet ordet av det är han indragen i den lilla stadens största mysterium. Det är nämligen så att Eerie-on-Sea som, ligger nära havet, ofta är insvept i en ogenomtränglig dimma och i dimman kan man höra diverse konstiga ljud. Är det den mytomspunna havsvarelsen som närmar sig eller finns det en mer förnuftig förklaring?
Både Herbie och Violet upptäcker att saker och ting sällan är som de verkar...
Min åsikt om boken: Thomas Taylor jobbar egentligen som illustratör och hans första jobb var att göra omslaget till Harry Potter och Filosofens sten. Malamander är den första delen av tre i berättelse om Herbie och Violet. Boken är väldigt mysig, lagom spännande och lite sådär knasig på ett härligt sätt. Tempot i berättelsen är precis lagom, varken för seg eller för snabb. Man hinner få en känsla för staden och hur folket som bor där är, samtidigt som det inte blir för mycket beskrivningar av miljön. En mycket underhållande bok i en liten knasig och mysig kuststad!

Story: Herbie Lemon is the "Lost-and-Founder" at the Grand Nautilus Hotel and it's his job to take care of stuff people have forgotten or lost in the hotel and try to reunite the things with its owners. He's been there for as long as he can remember and he's only 12 years old.
One day a girl Herbie's age falls through the basement window in Herbie's little nook with a scary sailor chasing her. She asks Herbie to hide her and before he knows it, he's involved in the small town's biggest mystery. Eerie-on-Sea is a coastal city often engulfed in a thick mist and in it you can hear strange noises. Is it the mythical sea creature crawling closer or is there a more sensible explanation?
Both Herbie And Violet discover that things are not always as they seem.
My opinion of the book: Thomas Taylor is an illustrator and his first job was to make the cover of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Malamander is the first part of three in the story about Herbie and Violet. The book is very cosy/lovely, just the right amount of suspenseful and a bit quirky in a positive way. The tempo is just about right, not too slow or too fast. You manage to get a feeling for the town and its people without involving too long descriptions of the environment. A very entertaining book in a slightly weird but snug little town.
