 Handling: Beata Charlotta Ekerman är inte mer än 16 år gammal när hon debuterar på en av de finaste teatrarna i Sverige på 1700-talet, nämligen Bollhuset. I publiken satt det inte sällan kungligheter och annat fint folk vars blickar riktades mot en. I en hård och patriarkalisk värld där mycket hängde på ens heder och hur ärbar man var, är det inte lätt att vara kvinna. Speciellt inte som skådespelerska, som ofta var synonymt med att vara prostituerad. I vissa länder under den här tiden fick inte ens kvinnor stå på en scen, utan alla roller (inklusive de kvinnliga) spelades av män.

Beata Charlotta föddes in i en fin familj som det tyvärr gick ut för och hon hamnade snart i slummen tillsammans med sin mamma och syskon. Hon drömde om ett bättre liv med fina kläder, magnifika slott med vackra möbler. Snart dras hon in i en skuggvärld som var väldigt vanlig, men inte accepterad: sällskapsdam till fina herrar. Hon stod för sällskapet och ställde upp på vad herrarna än ville och de i sin tur fick stå för hennes boende, kläder och mat.

Men det pågår fulspel bakom kulisserna och vackra Beata är både ung och naiv, så hon blir snabbt ett offer, många gånger om. Hur hanterar man att bli huggen i ryggen gång på gång och vem kan man egentligen lita på?


Min åsikt om boken: Jag har älskat författarens tre tidigare böcker; Barnbruden, Pottungen och Rävfhonan och såg mycket fram emot den här boken. Jag måste dock säga att den inte riktigt höll måttet, enligt mig. De tre tidigare böckerna har varit oerhört intressanta med mycket dialoger blandat med historisk fakta men den här boken upplevde jag som rätt seg. Det var mycket beskrivningar och inte så mycket dialoger och mycket av samma sak som upprepades. Tyckte inte heller det fanns någon röd tråd heller.

Men å andra sidan kanske det var så här Beata Charlottas liv var? Livet är ju inte alltid logiskt. Jag upplevde också att Beata Charlotta var väldigt naiv, nästan på gränsen till dum, men det är inte nödvändigtvis författarens fel, för det var kanske så hon va? Eller var det så det var för kvinnor på 1700-talet då man förnekade dem utbildning och intellektuella samtal? Man ville hålla dem på en viss nivå och därför kunde de framstå som dumma, lite som en självuppfyllande profetia. Hur som, boken var intressant men något seg och lite tråkigare i jämförelse med de tidigare böckerna. Jag skulle dock ändå säga att den är helt ok, inte dålig på nåt sätt men inte riktigt i klass med författarens tidigare verk.

Title: The courtesan

Story: Beata Charlotta Ekerman is just 16 years old when she makes her debut on one of the finest theatres in Sweden during the 1700's - Bollhuset. It's not uncommon for the audience to consist of royalties and other fine folks aiming their eyes at you. In a harsh and patriarchical world, where alot was down to your honor and how modest you were, it's not easy being a woman. Especially not as an actress, which in some ways was the same thing as being a prostitute. In certain countries during this time women weren't even allowed on stage, so every roll (even the female ones) was played by men.

Beata Charlotta was born in a noble family that unfortunately went down hill and she soon ended up in the slum with her mother and siblings. She dreamt of a better life with fine clothes, magnificent castles with beautiful furniture. Soon she's emerged in a shadow world that is very common, but not accepted: companion to rich gentlemen. She provided them with a companion and did whatever the men wanted and they in turn provided her with somewhere to live, clothes and food.

But there's foul play going on behind the behind the scenes and beautiful Beata is both young and naïve, she soon end up as a victim and more than once. How do you handle being stabbed in the back time after time and who can you really trust?

My opinion of the book: I've loved the authors three previous books; Barnbruden (The child cride), Pottungen (The potty child) and Räfvhonan (The vixen) and I really looked forward to read this book. I must however say that this one didn't really reach the same level as the others. The other books were very interesting with alot of dialogues mixed with historical facts but I perceived this book as a bit slow and tardy. There was alot of descriptopns and not so many dialogues and also some repetitions. I didn't think there was a common thread either. 

But on the other hand that might have been what Beata Charlotta's life was like? Life isn't always logical. I also percieved Beata Charlotta as very naïve, almost dumb but that's necessarily not the author's fault, because maybe that's how she was? Or was it because women were denied education and intellectual conversations in the 1700's? Society wanted them on a certain level and therefor they could appear dumb, almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Anyway, the book was interesting but a but slow and boring compared to the precious books. I do think it was alright and not bad in any way, not just the same level as the other books.
