Handling: 12-åriga Evey och 9-åriga Dill bor tillsammans med sin mamma i 1600-talets England, som plågas av inbördeskrig och allmän misstro. En dag kommer en grupp män till gården och flickorna måste gömma sig i skogen. Männen tillfångatar deras mamma och slår ihjäl henne framför deras ögon. Evey inser att de måste fly, långt bort och de beger sig iväg för att leta upp deras moster vid "samlingsplatsen". Det enda Evey kan tänka på är hämnd och hon svär vid sin mamma att hon ska jaga männen och kräva deras liv i betalning.
Efter många om och men inser Evey att hon kanske inte är så annorlunda jämfört med sin syster och mamma. Och det hjälper henne att hämnas.

Min åsikt om boken: Det här var en väldigt udda bok. Ämnet i sig borde verkligen falla mig i smaken men av någon anledning känns handlingen själlös. Jag förstår inte riktigt syftet med det som händer och får inte heller någon direkt kontakt med karaktärerna. Man får inte mycket bakgrundsinfo heller om dem, mer än några bitar här och där. Det var också svårt att greppa om det var en historisk fantasy eller en historisk roman. Var de häxor eller bara örtkunniga? Det får man lite svar på i slutet men innan dess var det väldigt oklart. Jag tyckte att det var väldigt mycket fram och tillbaka. Den stora hämndscenen kändes väldigt antiklimatisk och jag kände mig inte engagerad för fem öre. Dock är boken lättläst och funkar om man vill ha något relativt enkelt, men den ger en inget på djupet. Jag hade velat få mer info och dels mer djup hos karaktärerna. De kändes ganska platta. Istället för att visa miljön och karaktärerna genom berättelsen fick man det sagt till sig, vilket inte känns trovärdigt. Det var inte mycket i berättelsen som tydde på att den utspelade sig under 1600-talet, förutom möjligtvis språket som är lite egendomligt ibland. Kunde ha varit bättre, men är helt ok om man vill ha nåt enklare att läsa.

Story: 12 year old Evey and 9 year old Dill lives with their mom in England during the 1600's. The land is plagued by civil war and general mistrust. One day a group of men comes to the farm and the girls must hide in the woods. The men captures their mother and kills her right in front of their eyes. Evey realises they must flee, far away and they set off to find their aunt where the "coven" meets. The only thing Evey can think of is revenge and she swears by her mother that she will hunt the men and demand their lives as payment.
At last Evey realises that she might not be so different to her mother and sister. And that will help her demand revenge.

My opinion about the book: This was an odd book. The subject itself should have been my cup of tea bit for some reason the plot felt soulless. I don't really understand the purpose of what's happening and I didn't really get any connection with the characters. You don't get a lot of background information about them either, more than some bits here and there. It was also hard to get a grip around it being historical fantasy or historical fiction. Were they witches or just healers? You got some answes in the end but before then it was very unclear. I thought it was a lot of back and forth. The big revenge scene felt very anticlimatic and I wasn't engaged at all. The book is easily read though and works if you want to read something relatively simple, but it doesn't have much depth. I would have wanted more info och more depth to the characters. They felt pretty flat. Instead of showing you the environment and characters through the story you get told what and where it is, which didn't feel credible. There weren't much in the story that indicated it taking place in the 1600's, except for maybe the language, that was a bit peculiar sometimes. It could have been better but it's alright if you want something light to read.

Nytt i hyllan/News on the shelf.

Det har inkommit fler böcker. Igen. Jag har inte mycket att säga om det, haha. Det är som vanligt! Jag tror dock att efter vi byggde ihop våra två nya bokhyllor i sovrummet och jag kunde rensa ut lite (alla duologier/trilogier och serier flyttades till de nya hyllorna) så blev det helt plötsligt väldigt tomt bland bokhyllorna i vardagsrummet. Jag kan eventuellt ha känt att jag inte har så mycket böcker och kunde därför köpa in fler... Kanske, haha. 
Jaja, 7 nya böcker har det blivit i alla fall. 

The Year of the Witching handlar om Immanuelle som bor i utkanten av Bethel. Hon gör sitt bästa för att lyda kyrkan och följa det “heliga protokollet”. Det var nämligen i Bethel som den första Profeten förföljde och dödade fyra mäktiga häxor och rensade landet. 
En dag luras Immanuelle ut i Darkwood, skogen som omringar Bethel och är en förbjuden plats. Skogen hemsöks av häxornas spöken men Immanuelle får en gåva av dem; sin döda mammas dagbok. Fascinerad och lite rädd för hemligheterna i dagboken börjar Immanuelle förstå sanningen om sin bakgrund, profeterna och deras historia. Det verkliga hotet mot Bethel är dess egna mörker och det måste förändras. Förändringen börjar med henne... 

Hollow handlar om ett heligt orakel som plötsligt dör och gör att hela världen blir till ett rent dårhus. Onda styrkor svärmar landsbygden, gränsen mellan livet och döden börjar försvinna och en rad mysterier sker: en ung munk får extatiska visioner och förlorar talförmågan, gnistan till en underjordisk revolution tänds i en liten by med en kvinna vid namn Dull Gret i spetsen och Barry Follet, en legosoldat, leder sitt gäng av plundrare genom förrädisk terräng som kryllar av jättar och farliga sirener, bara för att leverera det enda som kan återställa den gudomliga balansen. 
Just den här boken kändes så jäkla konstig så var tvungen att köpa den. Vi får dock se om den är konstig på ett positivt eller negativt sätt... Den låter helt galen! 

The Red Threads of Fortune är uppföljaren till The Black Tides of Heaven och handlar om Sanao Mokoya, en fallen profet, mästare av elementen och dotter till rikets “Supreme Protector”. Hon har övergett livet som en gång höll henne bunden. En gång formade hennes visioner befolkningens liv men oavsett vilka tragedier Mokoya såg kunde hon aldrig ändra framtiden. Bruten av förlusten av sin dotter jagar hon nu dödsbringande, himlaskymmande naga i de stränga ytterkanterna av riket med flockar av dinosaurier vid sin sida, långt ifrån allt hon en gång älskade. 
När hon spårar en massiv naga som hotar den rebelliska gruvstaden Bataanar, träffar Mokoya den mystiska och lockande Rider. Men allt är inte som det verkar; besten de båda jagar bär på en hemlighet som kan starta krig i hela Protektoratet. Samtidigt som hon dras in i en konspiration av magi och svek måste Mokoya acceptera sina extraordinära och farliga gåcor annars riskerar hon att förlora allt hon håller kärt. 
Första boken tyckte jag var intressant för jag minns att det fanns karaktärer där som var icke binära och berättelsen i sig var väldigt annorlunda. 

Carry On handlar om Simon Snow, som är den värsta utvalda som någonsin blivit vald. Hälften av tiden kan han inte ens få sin trollstav att funka eller så sätter han eld på något. Hans mentor undviker honom, hans flickvän har gjort slut och det springer runt ett magiätande monster som bär Simons ansikte. Hans rumskompis Baz hade haft rena friluftsdagen med allt det här, om han hade varit här men det är deras sista år på Watford School of Magicks och Simons irriterande nemesis brydde sig inte ens om att duka upp. 

The Archive of the Forgotten är fortsättningen på The Library of the Unwritten som jag precis läste ut och den här gången handlar det om att biblioteket i helvetet räddades från undergång men hundratals av potentiella böcker blev skadade. Den förra bibliotekarien Claire och musan Brevity känner förlusten av de berättelserna och försöker att anpassa sig till sina nya roller. Men när resterna av böckerna börjar läcka underlig bläck inser Clarie att biblioteket har gömt undan hemligheter från helvetet och från sin egen bibliotekarie. 
Brevity och Claire blir genast oense om hur de ska lösa det här med bläcket och potentiella krafter som det har, har inte undgått någon. När en representant för Muse Corps dyker upp på biblioteket för att råda Brevity så jagar ängeln Ramiel och bokkaraktären Hero efter svar i andra världar. Bläckets sanna natur kan förändra efterlivet på en fundamental nivå, på gott och ont men det beror helt på vem som håller i pennan. 

The Sin Eater handlar om 14-åriga May Owens som är förstörd efter att ha blivit dömd till att bli en syndätare på livstid, efter att ha stulit en limpa bröd. Men snart inser hon att hennes nya osynlighet öppnar dörrar och när två av drottningens tjänare dö börjar hon utreda ett hemskt rykte... 
Boken utspelar sig i 1600-talets England och är en berättelse om förräderi, kvinnor och makt men också den underliga friheten som kommer med att inte vara någon. För May inser att inte vara någon ibland är allt som räknas. 

The Bone Shard Daughter handlar om en kejsare som regerat i årtionden och hans benskrävemagi driver de djurlikna konstruktionerna i riket som upprätthåller lag och ordning. Men hans styre har försämrats och revolutionen sveper över rikets många öar. När kejsaren vägrar att erkänna sin dotter som arvtagare till tronen svär hon på att bevisa sitt värde genom att bemästra den förbjudna sorten av benskärvemagi. Men den typen av magi har en dödlig kostnad. 
Detta är tydligen en scifi, så ska bli spännande att se om den faller mig i smaken eller inte. 

Har ni läst nån av böckerna ovan?

A couple of new books has arrived. Again. I don’t have much to say about that, haha. It’s as it always is. I do think that after we put together our two new bookshelves in the bedroom and I got to clear out a bit (all the duologies/triologies and series are on the new shelves) it suddenly felt like the shelves in the livingroom were very empty. I might have felt like I don’t have that many books and therefore could by more... Maybe, haha. 
Anyway, it came down to 7 new books. 

The Year of the Witching is about Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement. But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother. Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her. 

Hollow is about a sacred oracle who suddenly dies and the world spirals deeper into bedlam. Evil forces envelop the countryside, the line between life and the afterlife begins to blur and a series of strange mysteries unfolds: a young monk has ecstatic visions and loses his ability to speak, an underground revolution is sparked in a small village with a woman called Dull Gret at the helm and Berry Follet, a mercenary, leads his gang of marauders across a treacherous terrain filled with giants and dangerous sirens to deliver the one thing that can restore order to the divine landscape. 
This book sounds absolutely mad so I just had to buy it. We’ll see if it’s mad in a positive or negative way. 

The Red Threads of Fortune is the sequel to The Black Tides of Heaven and is about the fallen prophet, master of the elements, and daughter of the supreme Protector, Sanao Mokoya who has abandoned the life that once bound her. Once her visions shaped the lives of citizens across the land, but no matter what tragedy Mokoya foresaw, she could never reshape the future. Broken by the loss of her young daughter, she now hunts deadly, sky-obscuring naga in the harsh outer reaches of the kingdom with packs of dinosaurs at her side, far from everything she used to love. 
On the trail of a massive naga that threatens the rebellious mining city of Bataanar, Mokoya meets the mysterious and alluring Rider. But all is not as it seems: the beast they both hunt harbors a secret that could ignite war throughout the Protectorate. As she is drawn into a conspiracy of magic and betrayal, Mokoya must come to terms with her extraordinary and dangerous gifts, or risk losing the little she has left to hold dear. 
I thought the first book was interesting because I remember it having non binary characters and the story felt pretty original. 

Carry on is about Simon Snow, the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen. Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here — it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up. 

The Archive of the Forgotten is the sequel to The Library of the Unwritten that I just read and is about the Library of the Unwritten in Hell, that was saved from total devastation, but hundreds of potential books were destroyed. Former librarian Claire and Brevity the muse feel the loss of those stories, and are trying to adjust to their new roles within the Arcane Wing and Library, respectively. But when the remains of those books begin to leak a strange ink, Claire realizes that the Library has kept secrets from Hell--and from its own librarians. Claire and Brevity are immediately at odds in their approach to the ink, and the potential power that it represents has not gone unnoticed. When a representative from the Muses Corps arrives at the Library to advise Brevity, the angel Rami and the erstwhile Hero hunt for answers in other realms. The true nature of the ink could fundamentally alter the afterlife for good or ill, but it entirely depends on who is left to hold the pen.

The Sin Eater is about 14 year old May Owens who is devasted when she’s sentenced to life as a Sin Eater after stealing a loaf of bread. But she soon finds that her new invisibility opens doors and when two of the Queen’s courtiers suddenly die, she begins to investigate a terrible rumour… 
This book is set in a thinly disguised 16th century England with stories of treason, women and power but also the strange freedom that comes from being an outcast because, as May learns, being a nobody sometimes counts for everything. 

The Bone Shard Daughter is about an emperor's reign that has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire's many islands.. When the emperor refuses to recognise his daughter as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic. Yet such power carries a deadly cost. 
This is apparantly scifi, it’ll be interesting to see if it my cup of tea or not.
