Handling: The Egril har ockuperat och ruinerat Jia. Människor dödas eller tas som slavar och förs via portaler till Kagestan. Vad som händer med dem där vet ingen, men de ses aldrig igen. Tinnstra flyr landet med båt tillsammans med den sista medlemmen ur Jias kungafamilj. Målet är ett grannland som styrs av kungabarnets farbror. Där hoppas Tinnstra finna stöd och hjälp för att återta sitt land. Men istället blir det helt annorlunda...

Drens föräldrar är döda och många av de vänner han hade är också borta. Istället för att jobba i smågrupper och attackera alla har Dren börjat förstå att han måste gå samman med Hanran för att stoppa invasionen. Om det är någon som inte är rädd för att spränga både folk och byggnader så är det Dren. Men hälsan verkar inte vara i behåll...

Yas lider av sina handlingar i motståndets tjänst. När hon råkar på en familjemedlem till ett av hennes offer, blir saker och ting väldigt komplicerat. Yas försöker få folket att ena sig och dela med sig av det som är nödvändigt, men när hämnden är en hack i hälarna kan det bli svårt....

Jax lider av tortyren han fick utstå i Egrils händer. Trots att han fick sin arm tillbaka hör han sin plågoandes röst i sitt huvud hela tiden. Han verkar aldrig bli av med monstret och han har svårt för att veta vad som är verkligt och vad som är minnen/hallucinationer. Han önskar mest att få dö, men ödet verkar vilja något helt annat...

Mateon ska äntligen få gå i krig och hedra både sin gud Kage och Egrils kejsare. Han är en inbiten troende som mer än gärna offrar livet för att hamna hos Kage i efterlivet. Men livet som soldat blir inte alls som han hade tänkt sig, snarare tvärtom. Mateon vet inte riktigt om han kan stå ut med sina gärningar och sina medsoldaters syn på världen...

Min åsikt om boken: Alltså, wow! Jag var som bekant helt lyrisk över första boken "We are the dead" och tyvärr brukar andra boken oftast vara dålig i trilogier och serier, så jag var lite skeptisk. Men jag tror fasen den här var t.o.m. bättre än första! Hur det ens är möjligt förstår jag inte, men vad härligt! Det är aldrig en tråkig stund, utan det händer saker hela tiden men utan att vara för mycket eller bli stressigt. Spänningen är på topp hela tiden och handlingen håller samma takt hela tiden. Den här gången fick man även uppleva flera monster, portaler, tidsresor och jag vet inte allt. Vid första anblicken kan det verka som en salig blandning, men det funkar. Allting funkar och det finns inget som man ifrågasätter eller tycker är konstigt. Tinnstra och Yas har verkligen vuxit som karaktärer. I första boken var de lite veliga och fega. Nu var de däremot oerhört starka, säkra och hade skinn på näsan. Jag uppskattade också att Zorique växte upp tillsammans med 3 olika men väldigt starka kvinnor. Det är inte ofta man får möta flera starka kvinnliga karaktärer i böcker skrivna av män!
Jag älskade boken hur som helst, om det inte märks. Den var så bra! Helt klart en av årets bästa böcker. Jag ser så mycket fram emot nästa bok som ska komma ut i år om det inte ändras. Gillar man asieninspirerad fantasy med grymma karaktärer, intressanta varelser och världar ska man definitivt läsa de här böckerna!

Story: The Egril has occupied and ruined Jia. People are killed or taken as slaves and brought through gates to Kagestan. What happens to them there no one knows, but they are never seen again. Tinnstra is fleeing the country by boat together with the last member of Jia's royal family. The goal is a neighbouring country that is ruled by an uncle to the royal child. There Tinnstra hopes to find support and help to reclaim her country. But everything goes a very different way all together...

Dren's parents are dead and many of the friends he had are also gone. Instead of working in small groups and attack everyone, Dren has finally understood that he needs to join the Hanran to stop the invasion. If there's anyone that is not afraid of blowing up both people and buildings it's Dren. But his health doesn't seem to be that great...

Yas is suffering from her actions in the service of the resistance. When she meets a family member of one of her victims, things get complicated. Yas tries to unify the people and make them share what they have, but with revenge breathing down her neck it's getting really hard...

Jax is suffering from the torture he endured in the hands of the Egril. Despite getting his arm back he still hear his torturer's voice in his head all the time. He doesn't seem to get rid of the monster and has a hard way of knowing what is real and what's not. His only wish is to die, but destiny has other things in mind...

Mateon is finally going out to war, to honor his god Kage and the emperor of Egril. He's a devoted believer who is more than willing to give his life to end up with Kage in the afterlife. But his life as a soldier is not what he imagined, quite the opposite. Mateon doesn't know if he can live with his actions and his fellow soldiers' view on the world...

My opinion about the book: Wow! I was lyrical over the first book "We are the dead" and usually the second book in triologies and series is often not that great, so I was sceptical. But I honestly think this book was even better than the first! How that is even possible I don't know, but it's an amazin feeling! There were never a boring moment because things happens all the time but without it getting too much or too stressed. The suspense is high all the way through and the plot keeps the same pace all the time. This time you get to experience more monsters, portals, time travels and so on. At first glance it might seem like a weird mix but it works. Everything works and you never question any thing. Nothing is weird. Tinnstra and Yas has really grown as characters. In the first book they were pretty indecisive and cowardly. Now they've grown strong, secured and resolute. I appreciated that Zorique grew up with 3 very different but strong women. It's not often you come across several strong female characters in books written by men!
I loved the book, if you can't tell. It was so good! Definitely one of the best books of the year. I really look forward to the next book that is supposed to be out this year, unless something changes. If you like asien inspired fantasy with awesome characters, interesting creatures and worlds then you need to read these books!
